IT Technician: Buckinghamshire, Salary TBD
ChrisC replied to indiegirl's topic in Educational IT Jobs
Surely that would only be a problem if you share stations? Does he have the knowledge to even check proxy logs etc.....? Chris -
That one you're looking at looks like a literal phone line, so if you're planning on running it 56k, thats fine. A decent leased adsl line will cost anywhere between £1-2000pa (ish, I think) Chris

In a way, I think you've kinda answered your own question..... You can read all the files. You can write a new file (as a copy of an older one) But you can't modify (so change/overwrite an existing file) I'm sure there's a complicated way of setting it to overwrite the file IF you are the creator, but I can't think of it atm. Chris

I thought it was the general timeout of setting screensaver to a short time, around 5 minutes or so, and enabling ctrl alt del/password on resume. There is also a setting to revert to ctrl alt del/secure logon after logoff. Is a pretty standard setting. Chris
-
Yea, generally, but if there's just been a class in, and a 3-4minute turnaround of students, it won't always timeout quick enough. But yea, that is a way of sorting it! Chris

I would say the easiest thing would be to teach all students to check and delete anything entered in the login boxes before using them. Chris

They're probably looking at including the cost of all the holdups and delays, and are going to have to filter that cost down to the consumer. They know, even we do, that the clueless will flock to vista without even knowing what it is, once pc world starts their push on it, it'll fly off the shelves. I will admit, the desktop etc seems to be a lot easier to keep organised and it has lots of nice features, but i sure won't be migrating for AT LEAST 12-18 months. Chris

Yes, that's right, once a solus update has been run all stations SHOULD update. Mind you, if they're laptops running off a wireless connection (as most of our sims users are here), and their connection drops out etc, it can really mess things up on that machine. Sometimes db problems can be sorted using the dbupdate program. As far as I know it checks the db versions match the update signature etc and update if required, could be talking dog faeces though. Chris

this was probably nov2 then, didnt pay much attention.
-
Just a heads up, if the december sims update goes wrong, it goes wrong.... Ours crashed out after doing the ADProvisioning update, so the database etc didn't update, and then it kept bombing out everytime we tried to run solus again. So keep a good backup/copy of your setups folder just incase!!!! Chris

And to add, you have managed switches......? Chris
-
I had a weird problem with a loopback, you could ping everything connected to the network, but if you tried pinging anything connected to the switch from outside the switch (hope that makes sence) it didn't work. So it all seemed fine, but wasn't.... To say it in the uttermost edugeekish way, you could of had a spanning tree protocol violoation...... Chris

Firstly, what OS are you running and what version of sims? Have you got on demmand anti virus scanning enabled, will make sims appear to hang if it's trying to do an update at logon..... Chris

Apple dos 3.1 here..... which language: You are PHP. You enjoy the World Wide Web. You are constantly changing the way you do things, and this tends to confuse people who work with you. Chris
