I think there are free software readily available that can shutdown/sleep/hibernate the computer if its idle for extended period of time. This would solve the unsaved work problem, raised above, if a computer forcibly shutdown using a script. I don't have any specific program in mind right now though.

What OS does the school use? as mentioned above opendns is a free service that provides excellent web filtering solutions and if they are using Windows you can try the built in parental controls: they are rather limited on Win7 but have more features on Win8...and for a more advanced approach there are cheap solutions like homeguard which has extended monitoring/blocking features.

Things to check: - Antivirus software: it could have been disabled by an antivirus software on the laptop as the autorun feature is commonly used by viruses so it may have been mistaken for a virus. Check your antivirus software log and/or quarantine list. - If the memory pen uses USB 3.0 make sure it is enabled in the main board setup of the laptop. - Check if there are any USB related software that could be conflicting with the device drivers of the pen.

I think they will have to slowly roll it back..they've already backtracked and in 8.1 allow users to disable it without using third party software after initially refusing to do so..even after the huge outcry from many users. IMO Metro (which is basically an android imitation) is best suited for mobile devices; surface..etc. Also attempting to force it on users will only backfire. I think they'll eventually do what they should have done from the start: give users the option to switch between the old start menu and the metro interface.
