Hi, All i can think of is that you have two installations of VB 2010 Express. I would open it with the first option and see, but before you do take a copy of the original program so that you can still try the other one if it does not work. Rob

Hi All, Our college (secondary school with 600-700 laptops) have bought a prey license and want to get prey installed on the student laptops as a matter of urgency. we are facing a problem that the software does not seem to be able to communicate with prey through our proxy (we have tried both SEGFL's proxy address and out internal proxy address in the curl script options) has anyone else out there installed prey on their site and got it to activate through a proxy server or can give us some more advice Cheers Rob

yes we do disable the ctrl-alt-delte option, also an added complication is that Switch User is available to the students incase a PC is locked.

Hi All, Picture two scenarios: 1. The Logon Box looks like a locked user screen (picture with DOMAIN\Username underneath and a clear password box) 2. The standard Domain login box with blank boxes for username and password the issue is that the SLT want the last username to be displayed in the username box in (2) however whenever i enable the 'do not display lst logged in user' in the local security settings the immediate window that comes up from restart is like scenario 1 with the DOMAIN\Lastusername. Is there any way i can get the functionality they need? Thanks Rob

Hi All, We have over 600 laptops in the college at the moment along with 300 (ish) desktops. The college have rasied 2 points: 1. The current system we use for login tracking is webmans login tracker (a very good tool) however it is proving unreliable over the wireless connections to the laptops. I can only assume its because of the large numbers of wireless clients all fighting for bandwith and, at the point of running the logon script, some of them momentarily disconnect. This unfortuantely gives an unreliable picture of logons so that the SLT can track who was last on a laptop when it was damaged (it has caught us out recently a few times). 2. The college feel it would be useful to monitor the battery levels of the laptops remotely. Not just wait until its too late and the laptop has gone to sleep or powered off in the middle of a child using it. So two questions: 1. Is there anything else I can use to record logon times, supplimentary to webmans login tracker, (I have already enabled the event viewer successful event recording) and, 2. Does anyone know of a Network Battery monitor style tool that we could use in point (2) above? Thanks for any replies. Rob

Its always better to specifically permit addresses/hosts then deny everything. Its more secure and it's easier to troubleshoot (you can just add permit statements until what you want is available, rather than removing lines of deny statements only to find that you only needed to get rid of one line, not the whole lot) Also (from memory) the "Deny Any Any" line what Cisco and HP both recommend as a standard for the end of ACL's, its part of the CCNA accreditation (well it was about 2 years ago).

We have had this at our site, if your DC's and other servers came online after the network devices (switches, pc's etc) it could be that they can't contact the DNS servers, reboot the switch infrastructure followed by a couple of pc's to test. It worked for us over the summer during building works

Steve, Thanks for that, I have now solved the issue but it has something to do with your suggestion! I had published and checked in the pages for the website but i had not approved them, so i was seeing the style sheets rendering (as i had created and applied them) but the anon user wasn't. after approving the pages properly everything seems to be working (apart from the content Query webpart but i understand this is always a problem, and i have found a way round the issue it was presenting) Thanks for all your Help / Advice everyone Rob

Thanks for all the info folks, i have one more question (possibly now aimed at those of you who use sharepoint with anonymous access) i have a custom stylesheet and have uploaded it to the style library folder, however when viewing the page anonymously the stylesheet does not apply, have any of you encountered this before and if so what have you done to solve it? thanks Rob

Hi everyone, We are looking at expanding out sharepoint site and use it as the schools internet site, is there any schools out there that currently use sharepoint for their internet site and if so did you have any problems with it or find any pitfalls? cheers Rob

I think that you can upgrade the database to a normal sql installaion, (this is what i have just done with our moss one) link for instructions Just remeber to change the directory of the command prompt to your cd/dvd drive with the sql 2005 standard / enterprise in. this all worked for me. Rob

I got my first part time tech job whilst I was still at school (both years of my 6th form). The management allowed me to have my own network admin username (so there was a distinction between being a student and being a member of staff). I did get up to quite a lot of things as a part time tech (mainly after school hours or during free periods), the only thing I wasn't allowed to do was to look at the securus logs (obviously) and not allowed to 'poke about' in other staff/student folders unless i was under instruction. but pretty much anything else was allowed. Trust is the key issue here (both ways) and also respect for the level of access you are being given as a student. I am glad i took the oppertunity when it came as it has stood me in good sted for my current job, and hopefully future employment. if you are going to interview a student ask them why they want the job and also what they think that they will contibute and get out of the role.

We set the display to 'projector only' for DVD's, though i might give the above suggestion a go at some point.

@ Little Miss We had a similar problem, where by we wanted to lend keys to each member of a department, we contacted our supplier (dabs) and they contacted monarch (lapcabbys creator) and got some spare keys from them, so it is possible. Rob

Please retry at a later time. If that fails, contact your system administrator. Is there anyone who has experenced this and has fixed it.. we spent all day yesterday googling the issue and nothing we found helped us... HELP!!!! Cheers Rob
