Just to add, I'm having exactly the same problem as witch. Started last Friday for us. Things I've noticed or tried without finding a resolution include: Version 40.0.2214.115 was working fine. The update to version 41.0.2272.76 broke Chrome. There was an update to version 41.0.2272.89 last night - it has not fixed the issue for me. Launching 'chrmstp.exe' in %ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\\Installer will launch it as if for the first time (imports bookmarks from IE, no extensions etc). Deleted/renamed %localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data. This point will work for a single launch, then it will fail again, which I find extremely odd. [*]It appears to be an issue with the updated version(s) because on all PCs with the older version (40.0.2214.115) settings are preserved/roamed fine. [*]No chrome.exe processes on login to kill. [*]Chrome.exe processes appear when attempting to launch, it sits in TM for a few seconds, then disappears.

Sounds perfect - will give it a try and report back. What a nuisance if this is now the norm! Thanks both for the info

Renewed our OVS agreement the other day with a different vendor due to being significantly cheaper. Same subscriptions and we have the new license ID to go with, but I noticed under various products that there's no KMS associated with the new license ID (only the old one). Is this normal? I presume I'll need to contact my vendor to get KMS keys for our new license ID...

We have a 2012 R2 box for RemoteApp and have Start8 installed on it. We're able to manage Start8 shortcuts the same as our Windows 7 clients for users using the virtualised Full Desktop. The Windows 10 Start menu, currently, is functionally not the same as the Windows 7 or Start8 Start menu, but it's early days yet. I look forward to seeing how it can be managed and deployed in a corporate setting.

We have a new member of staff with the same first letter of their forename and the exact same surname as a current member of staff before they married and had their surname and username changed (so jbloggs became jsmith, but then down the road some months later, maybe even a year, another jbloggs turned up). Nothing is broken per se, but the Global Address List in Outlook/Exchange seems to be cached or something, and when using auto-fill to send an email to jbloggs it is being sent to jsmith because I guess the sender's address list hasn't 'refreshed' the current jbloggs (or, in other words, auto-fill is referencing old data). I can fix this on a per-user basis by manually finding jbloggs in the address list, which presumably updates the record for jbloggs for future auto-fill fun. I don't suppose anyone knows what may be causing this? The mailboxes and AD accounts for both users are completely separate and correct. I'd rather not tell the few people who this predominantly affects to manually search the address list because they're not too hot with technology. Thanks!

I know I'm being pedantic, but 8.1 is a good OS...it's just not as business-oriented as 7. 8.1 is a fundamentally better and more optimised OS, though - from the kernel to SSD support to its general performance. But, as was mentioned earlier, 7 likely will become the new XP in that it is super robust for schools and corporations. It's easy to use, easy to deploy, easy to manage, and it just works with nigh on every piece of software or hardware you can throw at it.

Shop around. I don't have pricing to hand unfortunately, but they have increased their costs since we jumped on-board a few years ago. I think it was between 5-10K, though, for 400 concurrent licenses. Renewals are significantly cheaper. A license is only 'consumed' within the WM console when a user logs in, so only buy as many licenses as you have machines (student/staff numbers are likely to be far greater than machine count).

We have a RES Workspace Manager Gold license and I can only whole heartedly recommend it. I took a quick glimpse of CSE's package and it doesn't look as robust, reliable, professional or feature-rich. We also use RES Automation Manager for deployment and automating various AD tasks (among other things), but they're completely separate packages and totally standalone. WM is great, though, and makes things like printer assignmemt, drive mapping, shortcut creation, and applying registries a doddle. 'Zones' and 'containers' makes it a cake walk to segregate policies and such. Its featureset is extensive beyond what I've laid out, and I'm sure you'll find many more uses the more you use it. RES support is among the best vendor support I've had the pleasure of dealingnwith, and their knowledge base has a plethora of information, tips and tricks, and general fixes. Have never had a problem with the software or company, so I certainly give it/them my seal of approval (for whatever that's worth). For the record, implementing RES was my main project after joining a newly formed IT team at my current school. We replaced a CC4 network with a vanilla Win 2K8 R2/7 network + RES. For a school infrastructure, it's the only logical choice. I dont have any experience or knowledge of your current management software, but If you have the resources and time to devote to a project like this, do it, and do it with RES.

[sims] CAPITA pull Autumn 2014 Release - Why???!!!
mrhcarlin replied to tech_guy's topic in MIS Systems
Thanks, I'll keep this in mind. I haven't had any other occurrences and it's been almost 4 days - maybe it was just people closing the upgrade. --- On a different note: a primary school I help manage, who do use Solus3, are getting a database timeout error when attempting to launch Banking and Catering Return from the Dinner Money sub-menu. This is after upgrading to Autumn2. I'll reboot the server in my spare time this evening if I have to, but I'd rather get it sorted without resorting to that during the remaining working hours today because one of the receptionists would like to use the broken functionality before Monday. I have added the CommandTimeout=10000 string (even adding a 0) with no luck. -
[sims] CAPITA pull Autumn 2014 Release - Why???!!!
mrhcarlin replied to tech_guy's topic in MIS Systems
SIMS.ini correct and we don't have the Solus3 agent rolled out. If there are any logs for SIMS client installations I'll just check those, but I couldn't find where they're located (anywhere sensible at least) if they exist. -
[sims] CAPITA pull Autumn 2014 Release - Why???!!!
mrhcarlin replied to tech_guy's topic in MIS Systems
Highly unlikely - our managed SIMS shortcut points directly to SIMSLoad.exe. Users wouldn't be able to run it any other way (or change the shortcut, for that matter). Before working around the issue by using SIMSApplicationSetup, I did manually run SIMSLoad (as admin) without any luck either. -
[sims] CAPITA pull Autumn 2014 Release - Why???!!!
mrhcarlin replied to tech_guy's topic in MIS Systems
Upgraded to Autumn2 at the beginning of Christmas hols before our break. Getting some weird behaviour on a very select few machines though: some (and I mean like maybe 2 or 3 out of 160 staff) users have launched SIMS but the auto upgrade didn't commence and the program doesn't load up. Attempting to relaunch SIMS does nothing. Does anyone know if there's a log file for client installs? I can get around this issue by running the SIMSApplicationSetup manually. Thanks. -
Weird issue this. We've got RemoteApp and terminal services working fine - we're not having issues with that per se. Basically, when using a Full Desktop, Chrome doesn't work properly...with touch controls (mouse pointer works fine). So users on iPads with a terminal PC running have this weird issue where Chrome is basically unresponsive and clicking into the URL bar opens its AppData folder. Touch works fine everywhere else; it's just Chrome misbehaving. Anyone else experienced similar? I can't fathom how our environment could be causing the issue and haven't been able to find anything which indicates that it is. Like I said, touch works flawlessly without Chrome in the equation. Responses appreciated! EDIT: Some deeper research suggests Chrome does have issues with touch. Using the Windows 8 mode also works fine, so it's the desktop mode causing me grief. I tried modifying some flags to see if I could force better touch support but that didn't appear to make any difference.

Thought I'd chime in here as it seems similar to an issue we're having with Chrome. We use Smoothwall and are also having issues with Chrome authenticating when we set it via Chrome GPO to pull from system proxy. If you run Chrome on login, you get "Access denied: authentication configuration missing", but running IE beforehand gets around this issue for some reason. Reinstalling Chrome doesn't seem to work, nor does setting manual proxy in Chrome GPO. There is an "Authentication server whitelist" policy but adding our Smoothwall IP and the name server doesn't seem to get around it either. Advice appreciated!

I'm under the impression that it isn't possible to install Windows Updates using the shutdown command, and a little Googling seems to confirm this. I've been using this as our shutdown policy for several months: %WinDir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 90 /d p:04:01. Works perfectly for just shutting down machines at the end of the school day, but the updates being rolled out by our WSUS server every Thursday at 16:00 are not installing on shutdown. We do get the odd report of a PC taking forever to boot up at the beginning of a lesson because someone the lesson before shut it down manually after finishing using it and when it's turned back on it wants to finish installing 19 updates. I'm guessing I'll have to get a little creative with this, so here I am fishing for advice. VBS or PS scripts? Any tips?

Thought I'd just update the thread saying this turned out to be a non-issue as the few students that it was happening to admitted to having written inefficient queries referencing too many tables or something, causing them to append too many records and just slowly the program down until the query finished. So to anyone having the same issue: it may just be user inflicted!
-
So it happened again today. Even on the newer machines, so it can't be hardware related. It only happened with two students, though, and one said it might be something they're using in the DB. After the exam finished I copied their DBs to my local drive (ruling out an issue with network shares) and eventually managed to replicate the issue. It was their queries. Running a query caused Access to freeze for 10-30 seconds before returning some form of result (appending tables or whatever it was). I'm not much of an Access guy, though, so this is pretty rudimentary as far as fault-solving goes. I've ruled out network performance and hardware, and I'm actually using 64-bit OS and Office on my PC compared to the student machines so reckon I can rule out software too. It has surely got to be the DB specifically? Is it just a case of students panicking that their Access has frozen, unaware that it's actually running the query in the background (however slowly it may be doing it) and is in fact perfectly normal behaviour for Access?

There is a GPO to disable GPU acceleration: User Config > Admin Template > Office 2013 > Misc > Do not use hardware graphics acceleration. GPO works fine but I won't know if it has worked until those same PCs get heavy Access use again, and conveniently the Y13 database exam (part 2) for tomorrow has been scheduled in a different room with the same new PCs that worked without issues
-
Ah ok haha. I'll have a research then! And yeah will do
-
Cheers pal. I assume there's a GPO to disable that? Will implement on Monday if so.

Should have explained further: This only happened yesterday during a Year 13 database exam, but I don't want it to happen again because there's three more of these exams. Probably about 10 students experienced the issue (all on the older, lower spec PCs). Re your reply: task manager is disabled on student accounts (naturally). I was more wondering if Access has issues reading from/writing to network shares (users areas on DCs), specifically if the connection were to drop momentarily or due to slow network interfaces. I just couldn't see why only the crap PCs were having issues beyond the network thing...a C2D with 2GB RAM should be plenty enough for Access on a 32bit OS. If Access has no such issues, then it's certainly PC limited.
-
Hi, We seem to be having an isolated issue with Access on a collection of machines (not all) where Access is not responding and crashes out. The said machines are lower spec than ones that are not crashing. Can you tell me if you are aware of: - best practices for running editing Access files across network shares? - any best practice for configuring roaming / appdata profiles? Some fault solving info: - all types of machine are running Office 2013 - the drivers are all up to date Cheers, Matt

Just to update: This GPO worked a treat - thanks a lot

Getting our RemoteApp implementation sorted out at the moment - just a few tweaks here and there I need to make after trialing with a handful of staff and through our own testing. We discovered the other day that when a user goes Save As, they can browse and save to numerous " on ". The only drives we want available are our network's mapped drives (their home drive and our shared resource drive). I've spent half an hour on Google and trawled through GP a bit, but can't find anything solid to do with removing a host's local drives. Thanks for any help.

Hi guys - first time poster! (Also apologies for hijacking!) We're currently running two Exchange 2010 servers on W2K8R2 VMs. We have IE9 deployed around the school after much aggravation with trying to get IE10 rolled out (that's by the bye though), but one member of staff a few weeks ago mentioned that at home when trying to access his emails he was restricted to the 'light' version. After a quick Google I discovered that IE11 isn't compatible so assumed his home computer was running that and talked him through how to add the site to the Compatibility View list as I found this to solve the problem. He was happy with the solution and it hasn't bothered him since but, despite peoples' views about it, we're looking to roll out IE11 site-wide at some point. Now, I actually found the solution to get IE11 working with Exchange 2010 and OWA before coming here, but I'm here because I'd like some clarification/advice before proceeding with the necessary updates, which we'd like to do over Christmas so it's one less thing to think about come start of term: We're running SP1 (no Update Rollups) on both servers. Is there any recommended procedure to upgrading two servers that work in conjunction with each other to SP3 + Update Rollups? Would updating one server fully be fine and then the other? Or should we update both servers simultaneously (i.e., SP3 on both, then Update Rollups on both sequentially)? Is there anything out of the ordinary we need to be weary of before proceeding? Cheers for any help.
