  1. No but its against their Xbox startergy. Windows dons't advertise itself as a gaming platform, xbox deos. Dx is used this way becauase its the most popular and widley used by developers. Mantle is now a contender. Consoles have been shown to be gaining market. I'm not saying PC gaming is dead but its trends are noticed. No one really knows but if you look at steamDB.info more and more games are showing Linux support. Stuff like rome2 is latest rumoured. My money is on the likes of Bethesda releasing a Linux version of their new MMO as the lead dev has voiced very positive things for SteamOS as well as a number of other developers. RPS, Reddit, Polygon for ref Granted its compatibility. However these guys know their stuff on making stuff work on linux, from what I understand they worked on the debugger that game devs would use to be able to bundle games for Linux. Agreed, but we can't take away from the fact that this is Valve, the man who made Windows what it is today in the game circles is Gabe and I wouldn't expect anything less! None of the new launch titles have hit previously quoted spec, the new xbox rome type first person is playing in 900p (is that even a resolution) I'm not saying they can't do it, but they definatly can't do it as easily as PC hardware. I'll be an early adoptor
  2. SteamOS has been developed for a number of reason. 1. Becuase MS development of directx is terrible and its only succsess is now based on its massive user base and that AAA developers develop for it. DirectX is in direct competition with their Xbox sales, thus the evolution of the API is slower than any other because of it. 2. PC gamers are slowly dying because the hardware manufacturers are leading the advancments of games, instead of developing for older hardware thats perfectly fine (GTA V Proved this most recenetly) they simply churn out games that use the most powerful hardware instead of optimising it for more users, theres a reason LoL/Dota/minecraft are the biggest games at the moment on PC and its largely because its so accesabile. Consoles don't have this type of hurdle its plug and play. OpenGL will give longer life to hardware as the API is proven better (in AMD anyway) 3. They do have AAA developers developing for steam. The debugger they made has fixed a lot of hurdles for developers on a time scale. 4. Valve hired WineHQ. Ages ago. 5. We THINK steamOS will look like big picture with more control. 6. Don't worry its not for everyone, there will still people who are perfectly happy with buying a console and paying 40quid for games that cost half that on PC and never know what 60fps in 1080p looks like Apparently haptic... heptic... hats! is pretty neat and imitates resistance with fancy magnets. I'll buy one regardless I'm really looking forward to something new. If one of my mates tells me I'd be better at CS:GO with a mechnical keyboard I'm going to be sick. I've got a corsair m65 mouse thats made of space age technology and wizardrie. No tappy fappy keyboard will make me better. SteamPad might though
  3. roganonline if you wan a dota friend. Dota helps me get my anger out. That and fancy cans of fosters with the old label on!
  4. Few rumours are that they might give % cuts if people develop with their new engine or release to SteamOS. Plus developers can now put SteamOS on the back of a box. Looking forward ot the next announcment.
  5. Praise Jeebus! This is 100% what I've been after. A OS made by gamers, for gamers. As said I already use big picture as my shell and sit in front of my TV to use it so it just gets better for me really. I know they hired a lot of the WineHQ team a while back and apparently they already have AAA titles supporting it natively. Well played Gabe, well played.
  6. Apologies, I did write a bit before hand and I must have deleted it! That a developer who also makes hardware wouldnt hold back one of the games as an exclusive is hard to bealive. I imagine they would at least give it a few days head start on said console. Look at how advantegous this is to Activision and the Xbox and The Last of Us on the PS3 for example. Nintendo have been doing it for tyears with the IP's
  7. If it wasn't for BF4 coming out I'd switch to linux as all I play is dota. But tbvh big picture is a nice alternative and replacing windows shell was strangley quite easy, simple reg edit. (Here it is if anyones interested: ) I don't know, the same logic could be applied to Nintendo and they've done it for years.
  8. Dammit fanboi *Shakes fist* Yeah ok granted they do have nice features. But you can over saturate and end up in the galaxy s4 territory. Stuff like Chromecast and roku are very niche and if I’m brutally honest I'd be disappointed if I found a Chromecast. I'll keep my MK808 as a lovely little XBMC device thank you very much, double that with the Yatse remote and you've got almost all the features above in a single app. Encryption stuff is nice but it’s just another version of googles privacy and won’t last as it restrains ‘features’. Hardware screen capture... will we be streaming our angry bird games on twitch soon? As I'm sure you know hw decoding makes stuff HOT and if like me you have a HTC One which is made of a single bit of tin or w/e it gets REALLY HOT, this worries people not in the know of world of hardware and quickly makes them lock the phone, put it down and walk off. Unless you’re a ooo look at my stylish none stock anything launcher setup what is the point of it? It’s just another version of android causing more fragmentation across the open source market. But, I’m pleased they are doing it I really am, its about time someone did this tbh its just they’ll need something more than this to sell it, in fact to the normal phone user the look of the OS is fare more valued than the features as long as it texts, facebooks and whatsapps. My point is reinforced when I ask people "Why do you have an iPhone?" and their answer is usually "Because its an iPhone" ... Viva la kit kat!
  9. Yeah, I'd go to Linux if major game releases went there. In a heart beat, Valve is already working on a debugger and because they rolled games on Linux like L4D2 there’s no excuse not to put the likes of CoD on it etc as Valve fixed the problems in the debugger and the engines are very similar (Source is like CoD engine - Modded quake3 engines). The overall feeling is that Steambox will be a Linux distro probably from ubuntu/unix-like heritage and hopefully they'll release it outside the steambox. I'll then use my win8 cd to prop up a wonky table in the workies club. My fave distro is elementary OS its boootiful.
  10. Yeah I dont quite a bit of distractions too tbh. As the story goes on there is places where you can do nothing but wait a day or so for a phone call so you get to do all the crazy stuff after that. I'll spend tonight messing on (Days to nights is the worst ...) Apparently once online is launched there will be 500 new missions to do at anytime including heists etc and different game modes on the social site like death matches and races. Amazing, really impressed by it all tbh. Also if GTAV can look this good on a 8year old bit of kit, then explain to me why the ARMA 3 devs have so badly optimized their game? If one more fan boy tells me its the AI I'll spew because the turtles from mario have better AI.
  11. I really wanted to get my hands on Ubuntu touch tbh. So many Android Mods are all the same, I see no real difference in cyan compare to insert coin etc other than the launcher which can be basically made to what you want anyway!
  12. So, Valve have announced "Things to come" and released a new mystical website with symbols. This has basically sent reddit in to meltdown and I love it! Even though everyone in the world is fairly confident that its something to do with Valves 'Steambox' idea they can't help but put 6 and 7 together and divide it by 3 and confirm HL3 at every opportunity! Personally, I made a steambox and I have replaced windows 8 shell with steam big picture and it works fantastic, it did however cost me just shy of 700quid. Spec for those interested i5 3570k ASUS Direct cu II 7870 (200sheets of GPU love at the time) 8gb Vengeance Ram with the pointless heatsink P8 mobo (I bought a MSI z77 Micro ATX sized mobo but it was dead on arrival so next dayed a cheap mobo and got my money back on the z77, not bought a new 1 yet >_< wasting my 3570k) H40 closed loop water cooler (was worried about it all been in a mATX behind my tele so made sure its cooled enough) Fractal core design 1000 case. Modular 430w Corsair PSU (Bargain! Esp for a Bronze rated PSU) CD drive 1tb 7200 WD HDD Green (The Eco friendly one because as you can clearly tell, I'm a Hippy!) Other bits and bobs such as paste and extra fans. My question to you lot is, would any of you consider a steambox over a self built rig? I was a console player for years and got sick of MS's daily dose of [swear word here] you. I was already confident I'd be spending about 500quid at the end of this year on a new console anyway so thought why not add few more quid because lets face it, I deserve it and build a PC and play everything at 60fps in 1080p goodness! As a side note the conspiracy theories for HL3 are amazing. The most recent one I'm following is the background on one of the logos on the new site has been added in Photoshop and colour rectified revealing what looks to be a graph that shows the particle decay of half life... LOL!
  13. I've heard its poor. Make everything flat and click loads! [insert 'Ain't Nobody got time for that meme here] Plus I'm too busy screaming at Russians on Dota or crap team mates on BF3 to be interested in clicking simulators!
  14. Took me 32hours to do the main story (got it tuesday finished it friday) thank god for 4 on 4 off! Really good story though and its one of the few games that lives up to the hype for once! I'll see you all on GTA Online, I'll be the one in the wrestling match robbing foo's!
  15. Try working in a new plant where one wrong move means you've just lost 40million quids worth of parts! We work a continental shift pattern (x2 12 hour days, x2 12hour nights then 4days off) We all check our emails while off but only to see what wall of technical vomit we will be walking into! It's fun I love it
