Haha I agree entirely with this, and Firefox apparently is starting with the silent update on next restart lark. Nonetheless I also agree the release schedule and in particular version numbering of both is utter foolishness - google have a lot to answer for there. I personally use firefox everywhere as when there's a problem to troubleshoot, it's the only one that doesn't lie horribly when there is a proxy or firewall problem. I do wish however they'd get their act together and obey MSIE's gpo's if they are present. Some schools I work in entirely rely on the fact that IE is locked down, and no other browser can be run/installed as a security policy. Unfortunately we jointly looked long and hard at alternatives and the answers were not clear to see

Unable to access our website externally without www
tin replied to nLinked's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I would agree, it's probably a dns issue. It doesn't matter if www... Or the URL without www... pings or not, just if it resolves. I would say that there needs to be a dns entry set up facing the outside of your network. -
BT net migration ip address problems
tin replied to nicholab's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Indeed we used to have a saying at an ISP I worked at a long time ago: BT are rubbish*, but everyone else is worse. Virgin have lost the plot recently. The best recent-ish one I encountered was after the 90 days lead time had passed with no circuit, they finally realised they hadn't even placed an order yet. All of my customers that have anything outstanding with virgin are experiencing issues with ordering and lead-time. * that wasn't the word used, but I guess I can't post the proper one here! -
BT net migration ip address problems
tin replied to nicholab's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Indeed, if I read your post correctly it is as you describe. If BT have offered to migrate the real internet IP addresses along with moving the line, then the router should not need to change. You need to check they did 100% offer to move the IP address. -
Done but with error on the page
tin replied to bodminman's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I have seen recently where a proxy (SmoothWall in our case) will filter a tiny bit of a javascript file which causes it to fail (hence done with errors on page). The solution for me was to check through the javascript files referenced by the main page, and check for anything going missing (diff between the versions fetched via proxy vs direct) or in the case of smoothwall it helpfully adds "filtered by smoothwall" or similar to the code so it was easy to see. Firefox view source helps greatly here as you can just click the links in the source window and see if the files come through unfiltered. -
ruckus guest wireless
tin replied to featured_spectre's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Or you could implment it with VLANs (to keep it from the rest of your network) and some extra kit to do the proxy pushing bit - I know the current version of Ruckus doesn't yet have the automatic proxy stuff itself (coming apparently). -
I would say that * for the last hop in a traceroute is a VERY common event. I forget the details, apologies, but remember reading something like it's a defence mechanism of the destination when you're hitting it repeatedly with packets destined for it with expiring TTL. While it could indicate the problem you describe it can most certainly can occur naturally.

Agree entirely, the ability of a laptop to get it's transmission back to the AP is usually completely overlooked (no idea why!). We take a slightly different approach in that we use jperf to generate the traffic and observe when going out of range.

3rd vote for a mains powered fan, and an intelliplug on the PC. You can get a little one that work like 3 way mains adapter.

Domain purchasing/managment recommendations please!
tin replied to cheredenine's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I do think the control panel is comprehensive, at least I have been able to do everything I ever wanted to with it. However on the email side I may have been involved in the same issue as your brother-in-law and support were poor, hence my comments above. Nonetheless we've used them for several domains for business email since 2003 and one hiccup is not bad for the price. If you can find someone you KNOW is reliable I'd say go for it, but my comment is that most (bulk) service provider's customer service falls to bits the same time as their network does. -

Of cheap domains in bulk? -

I'll second 123-reg. I have used them for many years. Their control panel is simple and always effective. However when there are problems their helpdesk becomes unresponsive, but show me a provider that doesn't have that failing... -
Do the LEDs stay if you disconnect all ports? That would put a finger on if you're facing a hardware or config/layout problem. Also don't want to state the obvious but I suspect it's worth saying - is the LED mode switch on the right mode?
