  1. No problem at all. Let me know how you get on if you manage to make any progress
  2. Hi Danny, We tried all sorts to get a solution for our students. The save to desktop was the cheapest scenario that worked. We tried saving to the users OneDrive accounts but the files would never save correctly as they would save as individual files rather than project files. We have actually purchased a Showbie license for our Music teachers. Not ideal as it's an extra expense but it has been working perfectly for them and allows the teachers to work collaboratively based on classes etc. It could be worth looking at if you don't get any more joy with the switches, etc. Good luck!

  4. Hi all, I am the new IT manager at a school and have unfortunately been handed the responsibility of the Mac network. Our music department has a suite of Apple Macs which are integrated into our Windows network. They are set up with AD and have file shares dropped down, etc. The company who put the system in place are less than supportive and it is my understanding that the previous employee at this school did most of the Apple server development and integration himself due to the incompetence of the company who sell themselves as "Apple Experts". So as the previous member of staff left, he took all the knowledge with him and the support we have with the company isn't worth using. In addition to this my background is very much Microsoft based and although I'm familiar with Macs and understand the concepts, I can't pretend to be an expert in terms of integrating them within a Windows environemnt. For the most part, the Macs work absolutely fine within our network including network shares and resources. The only problematic issue we have is GarageBand. Now I've been told several times by several people that GarageBand is not designed for network use, however we don't really have a choice with this as the Music department use GarageBand as their software of choice for their classroom material. The software works fine when using it but our issue occurs when trying to save the project. Originally, the pupils were saving the file directly to their user area through GarageBand. The majority of the time, the file would save correctly but then occasionally the project file would not save correctly. To look at the file in the user area it would appear as though it had saved but when we came to trying to open the file it would say incomplete project file. There was no consistency to the saving issue. It would happen on different Macs, different users in different year groups. We were advised to start using Sparse disks but this proved too complicated for the younger pupils. We were then told to save to the desktop and then drag it from there into the user area. We have been doing this since and it has to be said that this did improve the issue but it didn't completely resolve it. Occasionally we still get saving issues when pupils are dragging the file into their user areas. Again, it looks as though it has saved correctly but when we try to open it, it says incomplete file. Fortunately, because they saved it to the desktop, they do have a workable version to go back to. Weirdly, if we try to copy the project file from the desktop to the user area again, chances are it will work. As I say the issue is random and inconsistent but is causing the music department a lot of stress. My question to you all is whether any of you have come across this or a similar issue before? And if so, how did you get round it? Am I heading down a dead end with this? Is it simply because GarageBand is not designed for network use? I think moving forward with this I'm going to have to find another company who can provide expertise and support on this kind of environment because as I say I'm not an Apple expert. Although we have a system in place, none of the current department had any involvement in it's creation and development. So we're going to need a creditable company who can provide a system evaluation and also training. If any of you know of any companies who can provide this then I'm all ears. FYI - We're based in Yorkshire. Any help with this is much appreciated Rich
  5. Morning all, Just wondering if anybody can help with a script that changes the screen resolution to 1024x768 with a refresh rate of 60Hz? As part of the CiDA exam for our pupils, they are required to work within a set resolution (1024x768). However, some are having difficulty changing the resolution manually via Catalyst Control Center so we are wanting to create a script to place on the user's desktop so that they can run it and set it to 1024x768. Will user permissions be a restriction or can it be set so any user can run it? Hopefully this is a simple script, however this isn't my area of expertise. Thanks
  6. Hi guys, We're having an issue at our school when pupils are opening up Dreamweaver it opens up the Adobe Extension Manager CS5 as it is wanting to install 'Dreamweaver HTML5 Pack Version 1.2.7'. Once they install the extension it works fine, up until the next time they log on and have to go through the same process again. This doesn't just occur when using a machine for the first time. This happens every time they log in on machines they've previously used. Is there something that can be done to stop this? The teachers are getting frustrated by it as the pupils get confused by it and we have exams coming up soon as well. I've not had a great deal of experience with CS5 so I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone else has had similar problems and/or a relevant solution? Any help would be great. Thanks Rich
  7. Never mind. I've resolved this by forcing out a regedit. If anyone else needs instructions on how to do this in future, please let me know. Thanks
  8. Afternoon. Does anyone know of a way to disable the automatic Java update that appears upon login via GPO? The Java update appears no matter what version of Java is running. Even those who have the latest version still get the pop up appear. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
  9. I'm afraid current motherboards will always disable on board graphics once a graphics card is plugged in (from past experience). A DVI-VGA adapter will resolve this.
  10. Afternoon, We're running Java v7 update 45 across our school and we're wanting the default Security level set in the Java Control Panel to be 'Medium'. Is there anyway to force this out via GPO? I've had a look but can't seem to find the relevant path. Any help would be much appreciated
  11. I agree. I think it's the coding. From what somebody else has told me, the code is calling for Java version 6, which is why v7 is seeing it as untrusted and blocking it. We're going to get in touch with the moderators to see if they can send us the applets a couple of days early to test whether they'll work on v7 or whether we'll need to downgrade to v6. Thanks to all who've contributed.
  12. The workshop PC was running v6, whilst the rest appear to be on v7. I dropped my machine back down to v6 and it worked a treat. However, I don't see dropping the machines down to v6 as a solution as surely this will create some compatibility issues with certain software/apps that are requiring v7? I'm of the understanding that v7 has been installed since at least September. I could be a mile away from being accurate though as I'm afraid my java knowledge is rather limited... I've tried using an older version of 7 and it still errors out, but it works on any version of 6. Our applet used to be .gif but the teachers changed it to .jpg for whatever reason. Any recommendations on where to go from here?
  13. Thanks for the replies guys. I will check this out today and let you know!
  14. https://app.box.com/s/8bezl45g0az4xq7myu43 Try this link. You should be able to downlod the 'Candidate A' folder. That is the website root folder containing all you should need. Any help is much appreciated.
  15. Not through here. I can upload them to cloud storage if you have one? Or I'll upload to box.com and give you a link?
  16. Yes, in Firefox. We get the same message. However the pupils are designing their websites for IE only.
  17. Afternoon everyone, Having some trouble with a java applet at our school. We have a clock applet that the students must embed into a webpage. We received the applet from the moderators. Within the folder we received was a notepad file containing the relevant code to enter for the applet. The code is as follows; When we view the website in IE we get the following error message: NullPointerException With the error code of; java.net.MalformedURLException: no protocol: clock.jpg at java.net.URL.(Unknown Source) at java.net.URL.(Unknown Source) at com.sun.deploy.uitoolkit.impl.awt.AWTDefaultPreloader$GrayBoxPainterStarter.run(Unknown Source) 0 Java Plug-in 10.45.2.18 Using JRE version 1.7.0_45-b18 Java HotSpot™ Client VM User home directory = C:\Users\ ---------------------------------------------------- c: clear console window f: finalize objects on finalization queue g: garbage collect h: display this help message l: dump classloader list m: print memory usage o: trigger logging q: hide console r: reload policy configuration s: dump system and deployment properties t: dump thread list v: dump thread stack x: clear classloader cache 0-5: set trace level to ---------------------------------------------------- We've tried everything we can think of, but none of us in our department are web design/java script experts. We've tested this applet on several machines and we've only managed to get it to work on one HP machine in our workshop so we don't think it's a problem with the applet we received. We think it's security settings somewhere. It just seems strange that it works on one HP and yet fails one the other HP machines under every account (staff, pupil, tech) which are the exact same model and image as the one machine we've managed to get it working on. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks Rich
  18. Hi All, As part of one of the DiDA projects, the student's are required to change the resolution settings of their monitor. The machines in question have AMD Catalyst Control Center installed which we (tech) can use to change the resolution. This is available to the students and they can see and open the Catalyst Control Center and seemingly make changes to the resolution. If they change the resolution, the changes only last for 30 seconds, then revert back to the default resolution. However under tech or admin account the changes can be made permanent as the 'Do you wish to apply these changes' box appears, in which you can say yay or nay. I presume that the problem lies with the box that allows the user to confirm the changes not showing up for students. I've been told that the settings can be forced out in GPO that will allow the user to confirm the settings although I've had a loot myself and I can't seem to find anything that matches it specifically. Does anybody know of a GPO that will enable them to change the screen resolution without being able to get into Control Panel areas etc? Thanks Rich
  19. Yes we use Audacity as well but telling the teachers and students to use it to change settings is one thing and getting them to do it without supervision is another haha. We've changed the permissions so students can now change the audio output settings but of course this isn't accessible if the mute problem is occurring. I'm making it a priority for the half term to get into the IT suites that use the Realtek audio driver and changing the registry edit as you instructed and then at least the students can then change the audio output if they are having issues. Eventually they'll get the hang of it. Thanks for your prompt help on the issue.
  20. Right... I've tried the registry edit from your other post which has resolved the muting problem, however the machine is now defaulting to the Realtek audio output and I'm having to manually change it to the headphones which are listed as "USB VOiP headphones". I've set this as default locally and I'll see whether it holds this information tomorrow when pupils log in. Thanks for your help so far.
  21. The USB headphones may have changed some settings, however this also occurs when just using standard headphones, however all of these machines will have at some point been used with the USB headsets, although that doesn't explain why it's only muted on certain machines. It's onboard audio but it is a realtek driver yes. Now funnily enough I've just tried logging in on one of the troublesome machines under network administrator and when trying to unmute it displays the "Trying to resolve issue" popup and then fails stating that "The audio device is unplugged". The headphones are actually plugged in, but I can't get any joy with it. I'll take a look at your previous forum now. Cheers mate
  22. Afternoon all, Apologies if this issue has been raised on any other part of the forum. The problem we're having is on certain machines (not all) the volume mixer is muted when pupils log in. When the pupil tries to unmute it, it asks for the network administrator password. When entered, this resolves the issue, however this is beginning to become more frequent and I can't keep going from room to room unmuting the machines. I can't confirm whether the problem reoccurs on the same machine when a different student logs in after I've entered the admin password as I haven't kept a log of which machines have been having the issue. This doesn't happen on any of our XP machines. It also only seems to be happening since we've been using new USB headphones, although could that just be coincidence? Could it be permission based? I'm hoping that I'm just having one of those days and that this is something really obvious and/or a quick fix. Please let me know if any of you have encountered this issue before and/or resolved it. Thanks Rogan
