Our Head is interested in becoming a Microsoft IT Academy. Does anyone have any experiences of this, what's involved etc.

In Terminal, if I type cd /System/Library/CoreServices then mcxd.app is not present. So cannot get any further, any ideas?

We have a room of 20 Panther based Macs and an OS X 10.4 Server as well as some other 10.4 Macs. The Macs are bound to our Windows AD for login purposes (so that students log in with the same credentials as on our PCs and get the same network share). They are also bound to the OS X Server Open Directory for managing the preferences (e.g. Dock, Login Screen etc.). The 10.3 Macs are not applying the managed preferences though, even though the settings are the same as on the 10.4 machines that do. I have been advised to run "sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/mcxd.app" to force application of the preferences BUT mcxd.app is not present in the directory of these machines. I believe mcxd.app should be present on Panther and Tiger machines, does anyone know why this is and how to resolve it?

In case it helps someone help me, I have placed the Joomla site in: \library\webserver\documents\joomla I think I need to change the directory permissions in OS X, but even if I get Read/Write to Everyone, it still won't change the Pre-Install indicators.

I have just put the Edugeek Joomla package on to an OS X Server, however on the Pre-Installation Check, all the directories in the 'Directory and File Permissions Check' are unwritable. Can somebody tell me how to change this as I have never used Apache / OS X for web serving before. Thanks

Also remember that the current Mac OS can very comfortably join your Windows domain and map to windows shares on login. With Mac OS X Server you can control your Mac's software, restrictions and customisations and with Apple Remote Desktop perform remote management. If you've never used a Mac before then remember that it is all possible and all the information is available via previous Edugeek posts, so don't give up or be phased about integration with you current network.

For PowerPoint etc. SVGA is fine for computer resolutions up to 1024*768 (non native on projector).

So you have a normal PC at the front of the room and then run TS Client? The problem with that is that since we use CC3 I may as well just have a normal PC running CC3 at the front. I was hoping that I could use a thin client device like an HP T5720 with the drivers on the flash memory. Since we havn't got any thin client stuff yet I am still learning about it. But assuming a T5720 does anyone know if I can do it? The main driver here is that if it worked I could use the same approach for rooms where teachers currently hook up their laptops to IWBs at a cheaper costs than buying PCs.

You could just use an off-the shelf solution like Oarbs: http://www.oarbs.com/ If you still want to do your own thing then just set up a basic DB with a table listing your available resources, a table listing fixed bookings and a table for recording bookings made via your system. Then just code up a couple of ASP or PHP pages which interrogate this DB and display current availability in a table with links to a booking form for available slots. You can use Integrated Windows Authentication if running IIS on an Intranet for identification of usernames.

Has anyone tried to do this? We have RM Classboard / Classboard Touch which requires a driver and are USB. Since we don't have thin client yet but soon will I am wondering if it is doable or whether a fat client at the front of the room of thin clients is the only solution. For example, if you have an XPe based thin client device could the drivers not be on it somehow (e.g. on flash memory).

We are going to implement a suite of thin clients (HP T5135s) onto our CC3 network via Client Connect and will buy a Member Terminal Server for it. Originally I was going to buy a rack mounted server and put it in the server room. However, I was wondering whether it would be worth getting a pedestal mounted one and put it in the room, with the thinking that performance may be improved due to the locality of the server and client devices being within the same switch. Does anyone have any opinions on which is the best idea and in addition whether the T5135 on CC3 via Client Connect will be a reasonable solution. It is certainly cheaper than getting new PCs.

With RM Client Connect we can now integrate thin client into our CC3 world so that the students get exactly the same desktop, login screen etc. as the rest of CC3. If I just buy a terminal server I can do this myself but the students will get a different experience than they would if they logged into a fat CC3 station (they would get Windows 2003 instead of XP, software on the server rather allocated etc.) My question is, RM charge £1000 for the commisioning service which makes the thin client experience the same as the fat client one. I am wondering what they are doing to achieve this and is it something I can do myself and thus save £1000 (assuming I have already shelled out £650 in the first place for Client Connect).

I've now re-rolled the Mac server as Open Directory Master but kept the Kerberos Realm the same as my windows domain. Can someone point me in the right direction for allowing users from the Windows AD to log in to a Mac based.

We have OS X Server running on an XServe as of today, but this is the point at which I'm not making progress. My problem seems to revolve around the fact that when using Workgroup Manager in OS X Server, I cannot make any changes to preferences for Mac computers or any users - such as defining proxies etc. I cannot even make a new Computer List. The error is usually with a code like 14140, eDSNoStdMappingAvailable.

We've had 20 eMacs for a couple of years and recently got Remote Desktop and OS X Server. I can bind the Macs to the AD so that domain users can log in with their usual username and password and get their windows home-directory. Previously, when the eMacs where standalone, I locked them down nicely locally. However now, all AD users get a generic apple desktop. How can I lock-down the desktop, software etc. and make it apply to sets of AD users for all of our Macs?

We're primarily running CC3, with CC4 promising full thin-client integration (more than CC3 with Client Connect) I'm wondering whether it would be better to NOT upgrade to CC4 and go down a completely different route instead, such as all (or mostly) thin-client running either 2003 Terminal Services or Citrix. Can anyone provide some idea of what would be involved in moving wholesale from thick-client CC3 to a thin-client world without a CC3 equivalent layer? We've never used thin-client before but it seems like a consideration we should make given the reduced workstation costs and ability to log in from home. Thanks

We've recently bought Macromedia Studio 8 Professional with a site licence. The CD contains MSIs for each of the programs (like Flash, Dreamweaver etc.) but if we allocate them to workstations then when run the software asks for a product key (which we have). I am trying to edit the MSI in WinInstall LE 2003 to add the product key so that when allocated the key is already in place. Can someone tell me how to go about doing this? Thanks for any help.

phantomphan, the big benefit of RM CC3 is that it is a packaged product which works without much tinkering and is therefore very supportable and reliable as well as easy to manage. The down side is that it is expensive, I think about £90 per workstation plus all the server and network support. It's down to your priorities.

Our aging CC3 forest root (Windows 2000 Server) is starting to be a concern. The Print Spool service has to be regularly restarted to keep printing going and all IIS 5 websites seem to stop randomly (all together). There must be a route cause to this. Any ideas? :?
