just read the title of the thread how ironic!

Slightly off topic but funny none the less. One of the best things i've witnessed was when I was a student. I was in the tech room chatting to the guys when a teacher appeared at the door saying there was a problem with the printer. Without hesitating the network manager looked to the piece of paper stuck to the back of the door right next to where the teacher was standing, which consisted of 4 coloumns which you pick any word from coloumns 1,2 & 3 but the fourth is optional. he retorted with "oh right... thats got to be PCI Kernal Modulation Bus" the teacher replied, "yeah thats what I thought it was." 8O !! Any one done anything as sinister as that?

Good Work! - we currently have seperate vbs files for each room but will now look at one file.

We all love talking to people (*cough* teachers *cough*) who for some reason believe they should try to speak to us on the same level we talk between ourselves, what funny mis-pronounciations have you heard when they bright and intelligent creatures have tried techie speak? One funy I heard was referring to a netgear wireless adapter as the 'netgar thingy' - cant they read. Also heard an engligh teacher tell me the machine had gone into the 'bee-oss' ...

My brother in law who works in a school down the road who is a senior technician (second in command) is on 26,000 his boss is on around £29,000. Not a bad wage! we are based in the south west - ooh arr! Some schools are prepared to pay! You just have to find them. -
I expect this a problem all over - at least there is something to stop them. Anyone got a link to the adm?

What do you guys call your servers? I know in my old school they based their server / admin machine names on the gerry anderson theme e.g. Thunderbird (1,2,3,4,5), Stingray, Capt. Scarlet, Fireball etc.. wonder if anyone has Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa & Maggie yet?!?!

edit your printer script (Presuming your using VBScript) Add "SleepTime=15" - without quotes to the top of your script put the following in at the end. WScript.Sleep SleepTime*1000 WshNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "\\[serverName]\StaffRoom-Colour" The reason your add a sleep time is so that the machine has enough chance to install the printer then set it, some machine are so quick at running the script it finishes before the printers are added and the default doesn't set. Our full script for staff room: rem ** Next line must not be deleted ** SleepTime=15 Set WshNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network") rem ** This will delete existing printers ** On Error Resume Next Set oPrinters = WshNetwork.EnumPrinterConnections For i = 1 to oPrinters.Count - 1 Step 2 WshNetwork.RemovePrinterConnection oPrinters.Item(i) Next WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\[serverName]\StaffRoom-Colour" rem ** Set Default Printer ** WScript.Sleep SleepTime*1000 WshNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "\\[serverName]\StaffRoom-Laser"

We have an ice cream van that comes inside the school grounds (legitimate) and parks just round the corner from the office! -
I was asked to find / make something similar for our print cartridges so I wrote a quick VB App and it has made things a lot easier. I intend to make the front end web based eventually but if the app works?!?!

Guys try http://www.bluepoint.net for all supplies! Seriously hard to beat, you will need to setup an account but well worth it. We use lasertech for most printer cartridges.
-
XP Anti-Spy is a very useful tool - check it out! Also try NLite - Allows you to create an automated XP Install CD for the times when you need to create that 'Master' Image.

We have the HP 2550 - think its around £250 per unit, fantastic output!

We all know that Anti-Virus software is a must have, but what are you chosen favourites. I have experience of all major brands but have found Kaspersky Anti-Virus and the best around. Detection rates are phenominal it even has malware checks, updates every hour. I had the results from a comparision between Sophos and Kaspersky, and kaspersky won hands down, Sophos missed a hell of a lot of viruses! Norton - generally resource hungry & has missed things kaspersky has picked up. Sophos - seems way to flimsy for my liking, it lets you know the virus is there but does nothing until you scan, it would be nice if it prompted you to remove it there and then. Never have liked don't why - just dont! AVG (Free) - not bad at all, apparently based around the Kaspersky engine. If people are looking for a decent freebie head for http://www.grisoft.com Uk Supplier : DTE Software Systems Ltd - [email protected]

We use PCounter for our printing management. Everyone has 'credit' (free of course) 2p per b/w copy and 10p per colour copy. Although we don't charge it helps keep costs down as when they run out they have to come see us, then we open the log file for that user and can find out if they are using the service correctly.
