My personal camcorder is a samsung HMX records to SD (720 so not full 1080 HD) no way will windows movie maker go any where near it. Had to use the oem software. Once edited then I can output/play as i need to. Tried adding KLite codec pack, divX etc and media player classic as player. Still only got 'patchy' slightly jerky play back -so back to OEM software and output as mpeg2 or avi and accept the loss of quality. At other end of scale -cheap and cheerful 'busbi' has proved to be an idiot proof gizmo and students record then edit in wmm and off they go.

Just a thought. try using a standalone station/laptop to access and set up the router first. Crossover cable or switch and make mini lan. Then no worries about conflicting DHCP from server or other routers. Set up with out DHCP running on the router and set to accept DHCP from your server, or may be set static at router, or quiz for router mac and then reserve an IP in server DHCP. Whatever -change IP / DHCP as last setting, 'cos as soon as you save/restart you may lose contact with the router until you physically connect back to network (DHCP). Once back on line you should be able to access a control page in IE using the device name http://mynewrouteretc or IP if you have set a static / reserved IP. Hope this helps.

Maybe too simple but.... Check that you can see both panes of the folder browsing window. The left hand one wil only browse to folder level and yes you can expand it sidewards and totally obscure the right hand pane!

Have a word with RM. We've had laptop keboards suffer from fiddling and they supplied us k/boards for us to fit on site, so they will supply spares- if they carry them. Saved time and money.

Interesting. We are on the point of a new build for a joint 6th form and as we are RM CC3 (Stop it at the back!) we have had a brief on Trapeze. Centralised management of all switches thru a dedicated server. Intelligent APs and a software suite that allows control over all users woohoo! Think of a hotel/conference centre that offers secured managed walkin access. And 'guests' can be given leases by reception desk personnel and it can be timed, logged, directed and leases expire after set timings to suit. Multiple profiles so you could run staff, students, walk-in students, contractors all with differing profiles. Made me dizzy. Anybody got it? Anybody prices?

If you are thinking of complete comms -instant messaging, txt, VoIP and data with video and whiteboard etc look up Amteus IM Jack. They are trying to launch a hosted web based comms sytem. Plus point FREE hosting if you take their sponsors ads. We're looking at it but keep breaking it as we trying it on as more VLE than an individuals / group comms system but hey they said go and play!

Here's my two penny worth. Based on my last few days challenges (!) 1 Reacting to the security certificate warning (if you get one) and then installing the certificate from the tool bar (red warning in toolbar) may start the import wizard but it doesnt download the certificate correctly. To do this I set a IE7 security setting Do not save encrypted pages to disk and then dload & saved the certificate. Opening the saved cert then starts the import wizard. It should then go to the Trusted Root Certificate Authority folder, not other people (default) 2 Logon sholud be servernetbios name\username eg myschool\smitht where your site domain is myschool.internal or myschool.local 3 There is a web folder handling issue see MS KB 907306 I have tested this on my laptop Vista/IE7 and can robustly Easylink. I can also remove certificate trash easylink and then restore by dloading/saving/impporting the cert. I dont have MS Office tho only Open Office. My desktop is a XP/IE6 as we are mainstream RM I'm waiting for a couple of test users feed back. You can have a set of my draft notes if you mail msg me. Have fun!

As a follow on I work under North Yorks County Council (ish) rules. on their manual lifting training handout matrix, for a woman the threshhold loads for lifting from the floor is 7kg at your feet, 3.5kg if you have to reach/stretch. ( 10kg/5kg males.) Doesnt say you cant but you need assessment. Post the training weighed my site to site toolkit for a laff!

Maybe old hat to some but new to me. Staff member has just bought an ebook good idea(?) but now I find that in my attempts to check out what she had actually done, install Digital Editions to my station, test bed and RM build station under various accounts I now have hit the six activations limit. My plan was to store the docs on the server and put the reader software on machines as required and authorise using a generic adobe account eg libray@xyz. Rang Adobe tech supt who pointed me to customer supt who then offerd tech supt and so. So question is easy way to access DRM publications from a central source for multiple users on multiple stations? Thanx.

Hi we're talking to suppliers to outline a wlan for a new build with a 6th form 'dropin' facility. Because of the numbers we're discussing having managed switches and 'thin' APs. This will allow a web based control panel to control access both thru the switch to the network and the actual ability to connect, for all APs from one point. On top of this will be auto load sharing/hand off so if the students are all at one end of the room then the other APs will share the work. If you have 'thick' (standard) APs then the nearest gets all the workload and your speeds drop right off. Not particularily cheap but nice n shiney! Otherwise we run a std thick AP from a trolley/vault and that's fine for a room.

Hi everbody. Just registered as new into a 'management' post at a 800+ student grammar school. Now wear a tie to work as 'assist system manager' on RM CC3 ntwk. Previously travelling 1st line tech to primary schools with NYCC (W2003/XP), so new big trainset to play with now. Have fun.....

Hi why make life expensive/complicated? Nip in to Woolies or similar you can get phone extension kits that run very low profile cable and use RJ-11 plugs (with adapters 4 BT phone). Then run RJ-11's from adsl filter to router and bingo. Used this at home and other sites with 20mtr cable no probs. Crosstalk etc can be an issue as can signal loss but unless you can close out your cordless phone, nextdoors WLAN etc dont worry about it until it happens. Loss of bband speed- dont think the last 60' makes the big difference, you never know what your getting to the front door. Have fun
