UPDATE The problem IP address for some reason now works. I installed Microsoft Network Monitor, logged off and then logged on again. Did a PING to problem IP/Hostname, got a response. Hmmmmm very weird. I have no idea. Did the Network Monitor install restart something? Thanks for the replies peeps.

Don't recall removing and then adding the printer port when one goes down. But if its any help, the ports are standard TCP/IP ports and are named as the name given to the printer. Not the IP address.

Cheers for the reply. The static IP addresses have been excluded from distribution in an IP range in DHCP.

Hi all. I have an annoying problem with a print server that has been doing my tree in for a long time. The server in question has Server 2008 R2 installed that hosts network copiers/printers that are assigned static IP addresses. We have no firewalls enabled on the computers and servers. Over the last year or so we have had the odd copier/printer go down completely at random. Upon investigation, it turns out that the print server refuses to ping the statically assigned IP given to the problem copier/printer (Request timed out). But able to see the printers web interface via a web browser. Then we change the static IP to a new static IP that is free, then it behaves again. But the old IP now refuses to work from that print server. For example: assign the static IP to a desktop pc to test and then unable to ping with "Request timed out" message. BUT you can PING the old IP address from other computers and servers! Its just the print server that refuses to PING it. Oh and also if you assign the test desktop the knackered IP address and try and PING the problem print server, you get "Request timed out". After a while, at completely random, it does it again to another copier/printer. Then we change the IP again. Thus we have another unusable IP address on the print server. We have kept a record of how many IP addresses it has nuked and the total so far is ten. To cut a long story short, a rouge print server is picking fights with random static IP addresses. Server refuses to talk to or listen to knackered IPs. Hope this made sense as my brain has been scrambled. Cheers all:confused:

Hi all, I got really bored one day and decided to create a mandatory profile for Windows 8.1. I am so close to getting it to how I want it, but there is an issue where during logon for a test domain user takes 7 minutes to log in. Tried logging on again just in case it was for first time logon, but same result. I soon discovered that my Start Menu folder redirection is causing the 7 minute login. Upon removing the Start Menu redirect from group policy, it pretty much instantly went straight to desktop. Downside is that I don't have the Start Menu/App Menu that I would like. The Start Screen configuration XML works a treat. But the Start Menu redirect is being a pain. Any ideas to why it takes 7 minutes to log in? If its any help, the Start Menu folder that's being redirected is 1.68MB. Thanks all Cragz

Hallo all, I wondered if anyone has had the same issue as me reguarding Neoteris. I can remote in from home using an old Windows XP Pro laptop, but it doesn't work on my Windows 7 Ult x64 machine. When I log in using my domain login, it loads up the CacheCleaner and then gets stuck. A small window where the servers are listed shows "Do not close!" instead for ages. I have checked my firewall and any possible permissions issues. Still no joy. Any ideas? Cheers peeps

We use a program called Fomine Net Send on our Server 2003/XP Pro network. Very easy to set up and use. But we haven't tested it in a server 2008 R2/Win7 network. This auto logs in as the current user and picks up any other Fomine clients automatically. Very handy tool to have.

I'm going to open up the case later and check the SATA cable, and possibly replace it. To be honest, I haven't checked if the drive spins up when scanning. Hope the drive isn't the culprit. Only bought it under a year ago ggrrrrrrr. But when the AHCI does randomly pick it up, Windows loads with no probs. Thanks for the reply and will keep you posted

Hi all. For the last few months I have had an issue with the AMD AHCI not picking up my primary drive with Windows 7 x64 on it when switching on from cold. Sometimes it then wakes up after I prod the Reset button on the tower. If I'm very lucky, it does sometimes boot up with no problems from a switch on a first time. Once Windows is loaded, I have no problems at all. Brief specs: GA-MA790X-UD3P (with latest BIOS), Phenom 9950 BE, 4GB OCZ 1066MHz DDR2, OCZ GameXstream 700W PSU, Radeon 4870HD 1024MB GDDR5, Blu-Ray re-writer SATA2 (set to IDE), Primary HDD - Windows 7 Ult x64 on WDC BE 500GB SATA2 (set to AHCI), Secondary HDD - Files and other junk on WDC 250GB SATA2 (set to AHCI). Drive configuration as JBOD (no RAID) What it does: 1. Power up PC and BIOS posts ok. 2. Next, the AMD AHCI scanning devices screen appears. 3. After a little while, it will either - (a) Sits on the Scanning Drives....... bit for up to 30 seconds, picks up only my 2nd hard drive that don't have Windows on it, then goes on to try and boot from PXE on my NIC. I hit the Reset button on tower then it either does it again or boots the OS on second time. Or.......... (b) Picks up both my primary Win7 drive along with my 2nd hard drive and then boots straight into Windows (lucky to get this first time - roughly 25% of the time). Any ideas on how to solve this annoying riddle? Many thanks

Think we have fixed it. The old core switch that the problem switches linked to via fibre, had monitor port switched on for the fibre link. We switched off the monitoring and now the problem switches work as they should. No idea how or why that happened. But thanks for the help guys

I have just factory resetted the 2650 switch and doing a ping test from the Procurve interface isn't looking good there. Tried pinging the mail server and got 100% fail. Now thinking about hitting it with a hammer. Also got the fault finders on all switches set to the highest level.

All the devices on the network are on the same subnet of 255.255.252.0. The problem switches are linked together with a CAT-5 in a chain and conected by fibre from one of the switches to the center of the star topology that was previously the core switch. There are no vlans on the network. What we have done today: For a test, we factory resetted the Procurve 2625 switch and inputted the settings as they should be via telnet through Hyperterminal. Made sure the fibre was plugged in and we patched in just one computer. What we did notice was that the clock on all the switches are behind by one hour but no other switches are causing issues. The computer can seem to ping a select few of the servers with no problems. But on when pinging some of the others, it takes a few ping attempts to get a response and the first response is over 1000+ms. And there is a rather small amount of unpingable servers which should be pingable. Just to make sure, we are going to factory reset the Procurve 2650 switch in a bit. But pretty sure that the result will be the same. Cheers

@keithu 1. All the machines have DHCP addresses in the correct range and the correct subnet mask. 2. Pinging the servers get 4 responses of "Request timed out". After a few ping attempts, it wakes up and pings ok. But on some servers, it still don't work. 3. Yes I have checked the event logs on the switches and they don't say anything appart from the errors from few days ago. @Slartibartfast 1. The switches are pingable from anywhere else on the network with no problem. But pinging is hit and miss if the machine is directly connected to the problem switches. 2. Nowt in the event logs appart from old errors. 3. How do we go about testing the fibre links and the SFP modules? We have tried unplugging the fibre with the SFP module and plugging it into the other problem switch but the same result. 4. We have remmoved all devices from problem switches and tested one by one with same result. 5. Spanning tree is enabled on all switches. Cheers

Hi all, In a section of our main building, we have a cabinet with one Procurve 2626 and one Procurve 2650. Any computers or laptops that are connected to this switch are having issues in connecting to the internet via our proxy server, and pinging the servers on our network. We started getting problems with the two switches yesterday afternoon and still have no idea why machines are unable too connect to the internet or ping the servers. No settings have be changed and there are no vlans set up. Switch IP addresses are static also. To test, we unplugged every network cable and tested each machine individualy to see if a computer was causing the problems but we got the same lack of connection to net an all machines. But there was 1 out of 10 times where we got the net but then it goes away again. I'm out of ideas and I'm now completely bald. Any ideas? Cheers

Hi guys. I'm having a problem when a member of staff plugs in a card into a cardreader on a laptop, and they get a white Active Desktop as a result. It only seems to happen when their laptop is not conected to the school domain and with their documents made available offilne. When the laptop is on the domain via wireless or CAT5, it behaves. Hi all, Here is a very strange login issue. We have one user that has a problem user account that when they log on, they get the roaming profile error box and it creates a temp profile. All the students use mandatory profiles and they have all the same permissions. We run a Server 2003 Enterprise with Window XP Professional enviroment. I have tested the students account on different machines in different rooms and it still creates a temp profile. For a test I deleted the user account and recreated it and recreated the students home folder. Still no joy. But when I created a user account by using the copy function from the template with a fictional name (for example: Wibble Woo login as wwoo09), works perfectly. I recreated the students login multiple times with added numbers in the login string: Example: jdoe09, jdoe009, jdoe109 etc. Does active directory hate jdoe? I even deleted any local profiles on the machines I tested the login with. Forgot to mention that the jdoe account works fine on our network admin machine but hates student machines. I'm pullin my hair out aaarrrgghh! Help will be super. Cheers guys

I have tweeked the squid.conf a bit to connect to the parent for ssl. I can get onto the https://help.ubuntu.com with no problems in the web browser. but still says 407 in the log. But I think aiming ssl at the parent has worked as the parent dont show 407 errors in the logs. RESULT!!! Now to get windows/microsoft update to work. I Know there is issues with that and squid. I take it i need acl stuff again.

Our LEA is Norfolk County Council. I tried wget https://help.ubuntu.com from the squid box but it times out. Bahh.

I haven't tested port 443 directly from the squid box. Tried from the web browser on a client compy but with no luck. Even WSUS hates synchronizing through it as it uses ssl methinks. Thats the main reason why I made a proxy that uses NTLM. And I hate pop up login boxes . Is there a command I can use on the squid box to test port 443? Thanks.

Cachepilot is the filtering software that county set up. The Cachepilot is in the school and that goes out to a parent proxy that county has off our site. I tried connecting to the county parent with the cache_peer command but it only seems to work with our Cachepilot as a parent. I forgot to add the outsite parent to the diagram: (Client -> Dans -> Squid -> School Proxy Squid 2.4 and Cachepilot) -> County parent proxy

Hi all. I finaly managed to get squid and dansguardian working together using NTLM. But it seems to hate SSL for some reason. It throws up an error 407 in the squid access log. But squid accesses normal http sites with no problem. Here is the set up: Ubuntu Server 8.10 Squid 2.7 Stable 3 Dansguardian 2.9.9.7 Clients -> Dansguardian -> Squid -> Parent proxy (E2BN Cachepilot). Any ideas? Cheers peeps
