  1. ok so let me get this straight, if it already knows that traffic is being routed to the phone system, then why would you need to set this up if its already going that way, because i'm assuming then on the phone system you can set the gateway to the desired router there? I just am struggling to see how if you are working away, browsing the internet and talking on the phone, at what point something knows to send the voice data one way and the internet data the other. sorry i'm probably being stupid.
  2. ok thanks so much for that, just a couple of questions, what is the -p switch, how does it know to route voice traffic, i was struggling to how it would be able to differentiate both types if its going through a softphone installed on the desktop? Also once this is done is there a way of checking something to see whether or not this is in place on the desktop or not, or would you just have to do it again to be sure?
  3. ok you seem to know a lot more than me on this, i've never really dabbled in routing. So if i have my desktop that goes through a small switch then into a larger switch and from there if its data i want it to go from the main switch to a router and content filter device which then goes out to the net and if its voice i want it to go from the main switch to the a hosted phone system on linux which is then connected to a router which then has the other dsl line modem attached to it. So for data i need to set the ip of the content filtering/router device and the same address for gateway? and for voice data it would be what? the linux box which hosts the phone system and the gateway would be the router that it plugs into which the voice dsl lines go into? If so, then on the desktops how do i actually do this, is that a command line you typed, is there anyway of doing it through a UI which may be a bit more user friendly?

I'd appreciate if someone could give me an answer to the following scenario: If i have a desktop PC with a softphone installed, is it possible to route the voice traffic through 1 router to go out on a separate adsl line, and then route the data traffic to go out on another separate dsl line? And i dont want to have 2 nics in the desktop PC or 2 physical switches. It would be through 1 nic, to a small switch which then goes into the main switch which then goes out to the appropriate router and then the internet. Is this do-able, does it make a difference if i use a hard phone as opposed to a softphone? Any help would be much appreciated.
  5. Switch is - PLANET GSW-1602SF I think i set the port to auto on Friday and got the same result. I'm waiting for the opportunity to unplug to unplug everything and test wall points indvidually this week. A question about fiber, can i just unplug and re-plug that it like i do ethernet, does it work the same or not as i seem to have it in my head that it doesnt so i'm a bit worried about unplugging and then having no connectivity when i plug back in?

  7. sorry apart from the fiber port which is 1000 Full and another port set to 1000 but i'll need to check why and whats plugged into, but everything else is 100 Full, nothing set to 10
  8. Yep if i ping its pretty much constantly <1ms. Monday morning i'll take everything out of the main switch then walk round every wall point and test and see if its consistent
  9. I can unplug everything but i'll have to do that out of hours so cant test that just now.
  10. its everywhere. ok so maybe i'll have to get a cable tester then but even if i find the problem, its going to be something a professional i think would have to come in and correct, so maybe i should just get them in anyway and they'd have everything already to dtermine the problem
  11. The cabling coming out of the back of the patch panel i can see is cat 5.e so that should be good yes? So could it be the way its wired either into the patch panel or the network sockets on the wall? or even the patch panel itself although im not sure what could go wrong with that, surely it either works or it doesn't?
  12. ok let me be clear: Net Connection into SonicWall Router Plug laptop into SonicWall Router - Speed fine SonicWall goes into gigabit switch Plug laptop into gigabit switch - Speed fine Switch goes to patch panel Patch panel goes to network ports on the wall around the building Plug laptop into network ports on wall - Speed crap! So ignore the small unmanaged switches as the speed loss occurs before they even come into play. The problem is surely wiring between the patch panel and the wall ports. But what i do to try and correct this i dont know, can it be corrected or would everything need re-wiring between patch panel and wall ports? but it would be nice to know exactly what the problem is
  13. I was investigating poor download speeds. From my desktop i was getting roughly 10meg download speed on our 50meg line. So i plugged into the router and got 48meg. so i then plugged into the switch and got 48meg again. The cabling then goes from the switch to the patch panel, to wall points around the building and then to some small switches which then all workstations plug into. I plugged straight into the wall ran speedtest and was getting 10meg as apposed to the 48 when plugged into the router and switch. the main switch is a gigabit switch but as i get max speed when plugged directly into this, this isn't the problem, it surely must be something to with the patch panel or wiring in the walls to the wall point?
  14. when i look in task manager it says Link Speed = 100mbps. That what you mean? What exactly will a network tester tell me and then what can i do with that information afterwards in order to fix the problem?
  15. I've come across a problem in that when im plugged into the main switch and do speedtest i get 46meg download speeds. From the switch cabling goes to a patch panel and then to network ports over the building. if i plug into the network ports in rooms and run speedtest i get around 10meg download speeds. So i'm clearly losing a massive amount of speed through poor wiring? If so what does that mean, is there anything i can check or is it a case of i'd have to get someone in to rewire the whole place? What is it that could have been done so bad to account for this kind of loss do you think so that i can look out for it in the future? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm no longer working in a school, i've moved onto a new job in the private sector, but from the amount i used to come on here when i worked in a school i thought id see if anyone can offer any advice on the following. I've been tasked with upgrading a company's internal network. They currently have 2 dsl lines coming in from 2 different suppliers (the thinking being that if 1 company has network problems) its unlikely the other will. While it sounds a good idea im sure there is a better way of doing this, could the one company set something up to be able to guarantee at least 1 line is always up and working? These lines come into the standard routers provided which dont appear to be up to much then both go into a SonicWall TZ 210. I'm not familiar with SonicWall equipment but my next job is to determine whether or not the TZ 210 is suitable for 150 users or if i'll have to upgrade to something a little more robust. Anyone with any SonicWall knowledge please feel free to interject here! So i guess i'm asking, does this setup sound like a good solution or could it be improved. any thoughts?
