I've since found out that you can only send images to the projector through the LAN source, not project so i was wrong and it won't do this unfortunately

yep on same subnet and like i said i can ping the projector address successfully, just doesnt discover it when i use the search function. But i wasnt sure if this was a windows or networking shortcoming as ive never used this particular windows feature so dont know how reliable it is before i start blaming the network side of things

the one ive tested it on is a Epson PowerLite 92 H384A and it has all the network menu items such as password and LAN is one of the source options

So i've been trying to get this feature working for our projectors as we have Apple TV's setup so i want a solution for our Windows laptops. I've got to the screen on both Windows 7 and 8 where you either Search for your projector or enter the network address. I can ping the projector fine from the laptop but if i do Search for projector, it finds nothing and then if i try entering the address, nothing. But then im not totally sure how i should be entering the projector address. I've tried \\192.168.1.58 \\ \\192.168.1.58\ \\192.168.1.58\projectors\ but no luck. I don't know if its something i am doing wrong or if its a networking issue going on here. Anyone with experience of getting this feature working?

I've been deploying a Windows 8 disk image to my desktops this week using Acronis. I sysprep the image and tick Generalize when i sysprep. So when i come to install the image on my desktops, it asks for a Windows key. However when i deploy the image to some of my Win7 desktops which came with a Win 8 Pro license built in to the bios, i get prompted for a Windows key and if i choose skip and go into 'change key' it shows as trying to use the key i used on the desktop i used to create the image. I noticed that if i run the Windows upgrade assistant on these Win8 bios machines that it automatically picks up the key from bios and installs fine. Is there a way that i can install Win8 from an image but force it to check the bios for a key??

UAC was disabled in windows 7 yes, and until just now UAC was enabled on Windows 8, however i disabled UAC and it still doesnt work like it used to. And yes all computers have the same local admin and password account setup. The account is fine, i can log on using that account no problem and i can \\machinename\c$ to all my Windows 7 machines fine, even do it from Windows 8 to a Windows 7 machine, just not to Windows 8 machine. Using the IP doesnt change anything, i can connect to the machine fine, it just wont let me access c$ unless i explicitly share the C drive. If i just do \\machinename it shows me all the default shares available, which currently is just the 'Users' folder.

Thanks, although can i ask, is this a change in Windows 8 because this worked without having to do the above in Windows 7 and i even did a in place upgrade from 7 to 8.1?

I'm starting to install Windows 8 but noticed that now, Media Servers are populating the Network Locations heading when in My Computer. Is there any way to either not detect and display these on the Win8 machine or if not turn off the Media Server broadcast from machines. I want this off as the more computers i upgrade i dont want a huge list of every computer in the computer there. Anyone help?

I am about to start upgrading my Win7 machines to win 8. Where previously i've been able to simply \\machinename\c$ onto the C: drive of all computers in the office using the local Admin account on each computer, i've noticed i now can't do this on Windows 8. It prompts for the password but wont accept my credentials, even if i choose machinename\localadmin as the username. I did an upgrade from 7 to 8 so thought it would keep the same settings in place. i Believe in order for this to work you just need to have Password Protected Sharing enabled in Advanced Sharing Settings, which is enabled. Can anyone point out what is wrong here?

I have a plugin that i am using with Chrome that i know is 100% legit, however the latest version of Chrome disables it and the only way to enable it is to click the shield in the top right and select 'load unsafe script'. Does anyone know how to disable this security feature either in general or for this one plugin?

I am on the lookout for an ultra portable projector that i can connect to a microsoft surface tablet via HDMI. I want something as small as possible but that is still perfectly fine for projecting during a presentation and that the whole has to be in darkness for anyone to see anything (i'm not sure at what size point they start to become more of a novelty) I wondered if anyone had any experience with using any small, portable projectors and could recommend anything? I'm looking at purchasing a server with Server 2012. I intend to run 2 VM's on this server so what is the best approach? -To install Hyper-V straight onto bare metal then run my 2 VM's from there OR -Install Server 2012 with the Hyper-V role and then run my 2 VM's? What are the pluses and negatives for each approach? Thanks.

We are currently not on Office 365, but planning to move to it in 2013 Q1. When you can say you can send from both accounts, do you mean you can select which account to send an email from, so lets say pick through a list of 'From's' Account 1 to Account 4 then when you send the email out it is delivered saying from Account 4 and not Account 4 on behalf of stevehill06? If so i'd like to know how you managed to do that as i couldnt find a way to get rid od the 'on behalf' unless you were the owner of the account and not just adding the extra mailbox to your own copy of Outlook.

Using Exchange but its hosted offsite so all i get to manage it is a admin panel. I could do it all from 1 instance of Outlook but the problem is the 'send on behalf' problem that i get if a user sends an email out unless they are logged into the actual mailbox itself and not just adding it to their own/copy of Outlook. I've just looked at Server 2012 which you can indeed run 2 virtual instances with 2 cpu's so i might have a look at that. And i guess i just want to virtualise in case further down the line i want to move the installations, will be much easier to do if everything is virtualised. With the phones it sounds like I won't be able to route voice data over 1 connection instead of another. So the best i could do is QoS i assume?

We have 4 mailboxes that run mail rules and sent out auto responses that we need running 24x7. We also have staff that need to send emails out from these mailboxes so whenever you adfd the mailbox to someoens email i couldnt find a way to get rid of the 'sent from so and so on behalf of so and so'. It needs to just come from that mailbox name so unelss you can suggest a better way to do that? I definitely wont have the money for 2 servers, i need to make it work on one. however like i said if we evolve then further down the line i could look at getting another server in but to start with i cant see me getting funding for more than 1. For backup, i'm not even certain if i'll store any user files in-house yet. We currently use JungleDisk and will be moving to office 365, so i may just initially at least, rely on SkyDrive/Sharepoint to store files. So i think what i'd like is to be able to maybe restore an image of the server and the VM's or is that not going to be possible. What could i theoretically backup for free or next to free and what would it cost if i wanted the least hassle backup/restore procedure and how easy would that be? I've zero experience with backing up VM's, i 've only used Symantec Backup Exec on standalone servers before, going to disk and tape. So maybe i could do a disk backup to this NAS i have (if its big enough) On the phones, i THINK i understasnd what you mean but it is also worth mentioning that the majority of us use Softphones on their computers, so can this voice data be directed to a separate internet connection or is that impossible, would you need 2 nic's in the pc to separate them?

I used to work in a large high school, hence why i still rely on this place for such good advice. I am working in a small business now which has a workgroup network setup. I want to put in a server and a windows domain if i can afford it. If someone could take a look at my idea and tell me if i am forgetting anything, something won't work, something isn't best practice and the cheapest way to do something, that would be great. The business has 45 users, that predominantly just use the internet and phones for their work. The phone system is offsite so can be forgotten about for now. Server to serve 45 users, spec suggestions? Windows Server 2008 Standard (i can run 1 free VM server instance with this license? ESXi or Hyper-V? Install onto bare metal or not? Want to run AD and Print services Managed Anti-virus (avast) Spiceworks 4 x Windows 7 VM's to run mailboxes that need to be running and auto responding to emails 24x7 Believe I'll need a User or Device CAL for each user or device in the office? Most Windows versions are running Home Premium so i need about 40 x Win 7 Pro upgrade licenses Cheap but effective way to backup the server? I was thinking of installing Win Server 2008 with AD, file/print, DNS, DHCP services then installing a win server 2008 VM to run spiceworks and anti virus as a kind of Management Tools Server. The run 4 Win 7 VMS for the mailboxes. File storage, we'll be moving to office 365 so that will take care of email and file storage and backup or should i map everyone a personal network drive then sync that with SkyDrive Pro as my backup? Lets say i only need 1GB space per user, i could do this with just hard drives in the server without buying a NAS? Budget is the problem here, i need to be able to do this as cheap as possible so not spending money on something i MIGHT need. Once i've got this in place, after a year or so or when necessary i can then get the funding i need as i need it, but its the commitment for them to shell out a few grand at first that is the hard part so i need it to be as appealing, price wise, as possible! 1 final thing, we have desktops which go into unmanaged switches which then go into the wall, to a patch panel then into a managed switch. Would i be able to setup a VLAN (to seperate my voice data to send it over a separate internet connection) in this setup or would i need managed switches throughout? Any help or guidance would be awesome!

Does ESXi install onto bare metal then i create and run the VM's from that, so then i just buy lets say 3 win7 licenses if i have 3 VM's running? Or do i get a server 2008 license, install that along with ESXi then run my free VM's with that license? I'll look into it but i suspect the win7 licenses route will end up cheaper and as like you said, without any domain in place i dont see any reason to use Server really, it will probably just be a waste. I played with FOG a few years back to replace Ghost, got somewhere with it but then the whole project kind of fell away. I remember it took a fair amount of time just to get it going though as it was the first time i'd used linux and haven't since so not sure if it will be a good use of my time!

Yeah just thought of an alarm, but means them switching on everyday as opposed to every weekday which i can schedule in WOL2. Power on by PCIE devices is enabled. I've got it partially working. Its an Acer Veriton X275. I can power it on, power it straight off and the NIC lights stay lit up and WOL works (well it did yesterday, currently its not playing ball). But if i do a shutdown from windows, the nic lights go out and couldnt get it to wake.

We are on a workgroup network, no domain, and i want to put in a server to do the following: Host Spiceworks Run a few VM's with virtual box to keep some mailboxes and their rules running so that automated responses can be sent out 24x7 Run PDQ Deploy to dish out my software updates on a schedule in the early hours, seeing as Group Policy is not an option Run WOL2 to wake all devices up prior to deploy schedule and maybe shut down everything on a schedule at the end of the day. I may then start using it for more in the future but those are the core requirements now. There's no server rack so i'd be looking for a Tower and not really sure what spec i should be aiming for an also do i even want to bother with a copy of Windows Server, i might as well just stick a version of 7 on there as i imagine i wont get a copy of Server bundled with the hardware? As for the VM mailboxes, i'd need some licenses to run them, can you get any dirt cheap XP or Vista licenses these days or would i be looking at more 7 licenses? Thanks.

I need to get some laptops to switch on, on a schedule. I've got my desktops running on a WOL timer and even though a few don't want to play ball, i know that can probably be fixed by buying a new NIC and fitting them. With laptops it's a different story. I'm assuming the answer will be 'no' but can anyone come up with a way to schedule a laptop to switch on at a certain time if WOL is not an option? otherwise im stuck!

I'm working in a small business (45 users/machines) i used to work in a high which is why i still rely on this place for such good advice. It's important to say that we are running on a workgroup currently so i want to limit the amount of logins user's have to perform in order to access their files and email etc. What i want to achieve is to get everyone onto Office 365 using email, office apps and personal cloud based storage. I've never used SharePoint so get a little confused(scared) whenever it's brought up. Want i want in workspace is a simple allocation of space for users to save and open documents. I played with SkyDrive and it works well, having the local folder to browse through and also logging into live to browse your files there if not at your computer. Now i was told SkyDrive is not included with Office 365 and instead SharePoint is but from when i tried it a while back i thought that with Sharepoint i couldnt create simple directory structures and also have a local file on my computer which is synced back and forward. I'm now reading about SkyDrive Pro. Is this now included in Office 365 or soon to be? And will it do what it is i'm wanting to achieve? I also then have shared drives, how would someone suggest i go about setting them up with Office 365 so that i can still control who does and doesn't have access to them. I was looking at Office 365 Enterprise so that i could have desktop versions of MS Office installed. For some reason im worried about web based versions maybe not being as powerful, not being able to access them if the internet goes down or being slow and sluggish. Also im not sure if the Outlook desktop alerts would work in the web app for it but i should probably just test these myself but any insight into how rugged and durable they are under heavy use would be appreciated. I just need some help as the whole Office 365 thing is confusing me especially when im not sure if features such as SkyDrive Pro are or are not currently included, argh!
