  1. Should have known lol just like the old 2K installation okay then. Wes
  2. 2 x SCSI drives one partitioned into 2 1 8gb 1 56gb and the other as 1 73gb not setup in a raid config though. Wes
  3. Started the install then just after typing in the serial numbers it started the formatting of hard drives failed this action and stopped. Any ideas guys? Wes
  4. We use MRBS too and I've experienced the problems with bi-weekly timetables. Now I just set up all of the periods for the year takes most of the day but its then ready. Only problems then are the timestables changing during exams thats not fun I'll tell you! Wes
  5. I have to admit your right ticker the GUI is alien my tech went through a practice session and said he wouldn't want to do the test! I had a look but I don't think the kids will have too much trouble TBH they'll struggle at first but by the time they get to the official tests they'll be fine I think. Wes
  6. Surprisingly well actually, not too many problems. Got one or two of the pupils logging into the practice test area instead of the test area and one or two where it hadn't took via MSI or another package tried to install while it was running but all of those weren't really the fault of the RM software (I can't believe I just said that! ). Wes
  7. We'll be doing the first of the practice tests today from about 10:15 I think I'm gonna need a sedative! Wes
  8. I like Geoff's idea! At least they'll know when its too hot lol No service sorry they have overheated! Wes
  9. Lol! Sounds familiar, this school though is very good I asked about it last year got a quote round about august/september and having looked at the budget they've agreed so I'm happy Wes
  10. Also if it gets too hot you can legally refuse to work in the room! It is a health and safety issue 37.7 degrees? Yeah my old server room was like that the servers started to fall down when it got to around 39 - 40 and I started to soon after I think I was off sick for a couple of days! Wes
  11. I've recently had authorisation for Air Con in our room and we're looking at less than 5K for the units and installation probably another 1K for the electricans to come out and run some 3 phase wiring to our room. Not really a huge expense when for the same amount of money you could get say half a class of pcs or three/four servers. They need to address this write something to the bursar and the head stating the cost of replacement parts/servers for the school because as stated previously manufacturer's won't cover the equipment because it's not a fault with them its a fault of the environment! Wes
  12. Partnerships for schools needs to rethink the plan LEAs in general are overworked and swamped with requests what will this be like if all of the techies are made redundant? Wes

If the other works you could just swap the bit sover and see which makes the difference then just buy that one! Wes

I think you'll need to look at changing the drum too then. If you can clean it great otherwise I'd say replace it. Looks as if the toner has adhered to it! Or worse still Photoconductor unit could be knackered or the lens that the laser or LED uses to burn the toner onto the page. I'd go with drum first (Being cheaper) then look at the other options if that doesn't clear it up! Wes
  15. Look into Spanning Tree and VLans I believe this point had been brought up before somewhere on this site. Wes

I'd like redundancy with this though but the cost for SAN I thought was high (Need about 0.75 - 1TB of storage) Any ideas where I could source this and the cost of it? Wes

What would you say were the main improvements in R2 over the original? I know you now have greater control over users area sizes within the Windows system with some clever wizards for setting them up, can this be done on a Group or better yet user by user? Wes

Seeing as they look to SYSVOL is there a problem in Windows 2003 with share sizes? I seem to remember something mentioned in the distant past about this being the case? Wes

Shows I should read you post indepth lol sorry  Having looked at the storage I'll think I'll test the FRS and the DFS setups for a month or two before going live I'm going to be setting up the system while the old network is still running anyway so it should all be fine! Wes

I believe the command line options can do that though ChrisH? Or am I incorrect? Wes

You can but I think the Schema master maybe the only one to give you trouble in that area. If the original FSMO master has been stolen, corrupted or otherwise unavailable then you need NTDSUTIL (Info here: KB255504). Microsoft spends most of its time saying that DFS is much better than FRS but after Geoff saying DFS is unreliable I would have thought FRS would be a more stable alernative without too much trouble setting it up, hadn't thought about it before, thanks! Fair enough judging from the extra cost of Enterprise it may not be a financially sound idea either. The setup I'm looking at currently wouldn't have the DCs being fileservers anyway I'd rather have everything distributed across several servers. Wes

    Clustering

I thought a cluster was a group of servers setup so they acted as one? So you could have say 2 clusters one entity as a DC another as a storage server? Wes

    Clustering

Is that other DCs or other nodes within the cluster though? If you have say 4 servers/nodes in the cluster then shouldn't they all be upto date? Each works as if part of the whole? Wes

    Clustering

I was looking at the clustering for just DC reliability, but if you think that may be a little OTT then NLB would be the next step. Printer Pooling using a linux box? Is there a printer credit system available for Linux that can be integrated with AD as our school uses credits extensively (we charge for excessive printing)? I'm looking to install a couple of DCs but they wouldn't store anything else other than the OS and AD database. The storage would be done seperately I don't want to put too much on any server (All eggs in one basket) What would you recommend Geoff? Wes
