Group Policy desktop and wallpaper redirects not working on Win 7
Kineas replied to Kineas's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Thanks for the reply, I'll give that a go when I'm in the office tomorrow! -
The policies that are set to redirect the user desktops and the wallpapers both work perfect in Win XP. However, when logging in on Win 7 the wallpaper is black and there are no shortcuts on the desktop. Looking at rsop.msc, the policy hasn't applied. When I log out though, the wallpaper appears and then disappears again before logging out. This is really confusing me

Thanks for the replies, but I've sorted it. The home folder is set as the users home directory in AD, and I missed the option in group policy that allows you to redirect My Documents to the users home folder. Did that and it works great

So I need to create users for all the students in the school. I've used Active User Manager to make the users with a .csv file, they've all got a shared folder (\\server\username$) which is set in Active Directory to map to their Z drives, permissions are all set. All I need to do is to set a policy to redirect their My Documents to their folder. Redirecting it to "\\server\%username%$" doesn't work, how do I do this? I've only made 1 year group so far for testing purposes, and I pretty much manually created every folder so if there's an easier way to do this, then I don't mind starting from scratch. I know you can set a home folder with active user manager, but is that My Documents or what? I'd rather stick with group policy but any suggestions would be great! Thanks for any replies.

Installed one of these 8 port switches in the cab to power our 7 wireless AP's and I've noticed that it is getting very hot. There is an amber light on saying "PoE max" but I presume that's referring to how many AP's are connected to it, which makes sense that it's on as it's at capacity. All the AP's are on and functioning fine. Just wondering whether the heat is normal as it is powering 7 AP's and the heat will be from the resistor. Thanks.

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably just go with transferring from the USB drive to the NAS drive with robocopy once a day. I'd like to keep it as close to the process I've used and trusted on Server 2003 with NTBackup, this just means having to use a USB drive in the middle of the process.

Hi, Just wondering what the best practise is for using Windows Server Backup on Server 2008 with it having a software limitation of not being able to run scheduled backups to a network drive. Not long been in my current school and the previous technician has left me with a 2TB USB hard drive connected to the DC where the backups are saved onto, and a 2TB NAS drive sat on the network not doing anything (I presume he purchased the NAS before realising the software limitation and then purchased the USB drive). Backups are working fine but there's the issue of the USB drive being sat on top of the server if there's a disaster that destroys the server room. The first thing that springs to mind is to put the NAS somewhere else in the building. I know I could set a manual backup that will save it on the NAS and create an entry for it in task scheduler, but that overwrites the backup rather than doing an incremental one. So I was thinking to then leave the backup going to the USB drive, and then schedule robocopy to copy the contents of the USB drive to the NAS drive. The folder is currently 265GB, which seems a large amount to be transferring everyday but if I did it weekly, we could potentially lose a weeks worth of data. Is there any better way of doing this? Thanks.

In my school exchange is used just for internal emails and it has been running fine during my 18 months here. However, recently it started to play up and e-mails won't send and will go straight into the drafts folder. After restarting the server that Exchange 2010 is installed on, the e-mails all seem to push through just fine on their own. This is happening once a day , so it is becoming a bit of an inconvenience. Thanks.

Thanks for your replies. Group policy isn't set to not allow logging in with a temporary profile, and the permissions set on the profile directory and it's parent allow full control to everyone. Another thing I just tried is logging in while connected to the network via a cable rather than wireless, incase the profile was becoming corrupt with any packet loss, but that still didn't work

Firstly let me say that we already have Windows 7 machines on the network, and everyone can log into them. We have recently purchased a set of new Windows 7 laptops with 7 Pro and I have connected them all to the domain fine. But for some reason when I try to log into any of these new laptops with a normal domain user that has a profile set in AD, I get logged back off again before I reach the desktop. If I set the user so that it has no profile set in AD, it logs on fine. Obviously this would highlight their is a problem with the profile, but why doesn't this happen to the existing Windows 7 machines? I have tried creating new profiles from scratch, assigning them to a user, logging in and it still won't work. This then makes me think there's not a problem with the profiles, but a problem with the new laptops perhaps? I have also ensured that the registry is pointing to the right path for userinit.exe Any help would be great, thanks!

I've had quite a few problems as of late with teachers saving documents to their desktops, and when they log off and then back on again, to their surprise all of their work is missing! I know these files just get deleted, but is there anyway to store these files in a specific location for a set amount of time? I'd rather leave the profiles as mandatory, and although the teachers should all know to save to their own area on the server, they all seem to forget this when they're working on urgently important reports.

I presume the patch lead is fine as the end with the media convertor is getting activity, it's the other end with just fibre into a module on the switch that isn't getting any activity. It struck me last night that we have another fibre link in the school to connect to the annex building that we have, so I checked it out. Both ends have a media convertor! I am now 99.9% confident that another media convertor, the exact same as in Cab A, will make this connection work. Yet more annoyance at this guy that we paid to do this job, didn't even leave me with a full list of items that would be required. To add to this, we host our website through him on his 1&1 web space. The website has been throwing a 404 since last week and can't get hold of him. Very professional.

Ok cool, thanks for your help.

The school paid for someone to come in and sort this all out because my experience with fibre is minimal. But basically they left without it being sorted, dumped it all on my lap giving me a list of things to purchase which only included 1 media convertor and told me what to plug in where. This being a waste of time and money as I've done what they've said and it doesn't work. So am I right in saying that if I was to purchase another media convertor, the exact same as I already have in place in Cab A, that the likelyhood is that it will work? I just don't want to be wasting more money.
-
I did try reversing the pair and had no joy. One thing I noticed was that when plugging the fibre pair into the rack, the light on the media convertor would come on when the red was plugged into the rack even if the black wasn't. And that the light didn't come on when just the black was in.

I need to connect two network cabinets together, call them Cab A and Cab B with B needing to connect to the server via A. The cabs are in different buildings, but on the same site. There is already a fibre link in place but it was decommissioned and now the school want to restore the link. Both cabs still have the racks in them at either end of the link. I have installed a media converter into Cab A and have connected it up to the fibre rack, and then to the switch. I have installed a switch in Cab B with a fibre module. So if this works, I should be able to plug a computer into the switch in Cab B, get an IP, and be able to ping the server. But I can't. When I plug the media convertor into Cab A, all the lights are on showing that their is a valid fibre link and the network cable is sending and receiving. In Cab B, the light on the switch for the fibre module is off. However, this fibre module is a "3COM" one and it's a netgear switch, it fits fine and when the module is in place without the cable in it, there is light coming through the port so I don't know if that's an issue. Only thing I can think of is to purchase another media convertor to put into Cab B? Other than that, I can only say there is a problem with the fibre cable. Any help would be appreciated.

I have been requested to create something, possibly a spreadsheet, that would have on it all of the kids from the school. It would then detail their gender, and what after school activites they attend. I need it to be able to show me statistics such as % of kids that are doing after school activities, and maybe show %'s of different genders too. I'm thinking it's best to have a column for each club and either have a 0 if they don't attend it, or a 1 if they do. After this point I hit a brick wall. Any help would be great, or suggestions of other software that could do this.

On our network, we are using a 192.168.16 range for all workstations. However, to get Target Tracker working, I've had to manually set the computers that are running it to 172.18.25, and each of our 4 servers have a 192 and alternative 172 address (long story, don't ask). These computers with the 172 address run a logon script set in group policy to add 2 network printers, but since changing the IP addresses, it has stopped working. I have re-added all of them to active directory which didn't work, and I have set one of them back to an automatic IP address and it did work. If I log in as administrator on one with a 172 address, it does work during logon, it just doesn't for staff and students but it can't be anything to do with privelages as I can run the script manually using Run... on a normal user and it works. I'm a bit stuck with this, and have spent hours narrowing it down to the fact that this is the cause. Any help would be much appreciated.

Backup was successful again. The job monitor history was deleted, but there were a lot of alerts that hadn't been cleared from passed backups. I know the school had gone without a technician for a little while between when the previous one left and I started so I'm guessing no one was putting the tapes in during that time. Anyway, I'll see how tonights backup has gone in the morning because it was last Thursdays that failed.

Ok, I've got it to create a folder and it's working perfectly, except that the user can't seem to access the folder. Keep getting Z:\ is not accessible. Acces is denied.
-
I have downloaded and used that Active User Manager and I have created an test account with it. However, it hasn't generated the folder to be used as the users home directory.

Another 100% completed backup last night.

When I need to create a new user, I go into AD and create them there and also create a mailbox for them on the mail server. If I edit the entry in AD, I add a profile but then I'm struggling with mapping their drive to a folder for their My Documents. I presumed this would automatically be created but it isn't. All of the existing folder are "username" but are accessed when typing their location with "username$". I can create a folder, share it to the user and they can access it fine through My Documents. But how do I make it a $ hidden folder?

There are 2 policies, so I am not sure which is active. One has daily incremental, weekly full and monthly full backups, the other has full back up, incremental back up, and scheduled back up duplicate. I'm guessing it's the latter one although I'm not sure. However, the schedule for this looks weird. The incremental one is set to run every day, and the weekly full is on a saturday. It doesn't match the schedules of the jobs that have been setup.
-
Thanks for your reply. Firstly, the backup was 100% successful last night. I only started here last Thursday and it's the first time it's been successful but it's also the first time I've use the Monday tape. On the job setup window, it says WEEKLY and DAILY, but how do I check whether they're differential and full? At the bottom of the Backup Exec window, there is an icon that when hovered over brings up the message "All services are running".
