Upgrading to Server 2008 and Exchange 2007
AnnDroyd replied to AnnDroyd's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Thanks for that. If I wish to retain the same physical server, would the same principle apply, but moving the mailboxes back having rebuilt the original server? -
Can anyone explain to me the basic procedure for upgrading mailserver running Server 2003 and Exchange 2003 to Server 2008 and Exchange 2007? I understand you can't do an in-place upgrade of the operating system whilst Exchange is installed, but neither can you restore Exchange 2003 mailboxes to an Exchange 2007 server. If that's the case, how can you do a clean install without losing your existing mailboxes?

We currently have 7 servers consisting of: 1 x file server 1 x mail/web server 1 x application server 1 x print server 1 x sql/sims server 2 x domain controllers The two domain controllers are relatively low spec and I'm thinking of consolodating our server structure by moving active directory onto 2 or more of the other servers and decommisioning the domain controllers. How does this compare to the server setups that other schools use? Does anyone have any recommendation on which of the other servers (if any) active directory should exist on?

Does it backup Exchange and SQL?

Upgrading to the latest version of Backup Exec would cost us around £1200. It's not huge sums of money but it is a lot when it's something you hadn't planned for.

Can anyone reccommend any good backup software that's compatible with Server 2008, Exchange an SQL? We currently use Symantec Backup Exec 11d, but the cost of upgrading to the latest version in order to be compatible with Server 2008 is prohibitive. NTBackup would have been fine, but Microsoft appear to have decided to remove it!

We wish to set up a system where our Acceptable Usage POlicy is displayed to students when they log on. They will then have to agree to the policy before being able to continue. If they disagree, they will automatically be logged off. Does anyone know of any freeware software, or any other method of achievening this?

We are using Exchange 2003 and would like to chaneg the subject line that appears on Out of Office Replies. By default it says "Out of Office AutoReply:" We would like to change it to just "Autoreply". Any suggestions?

Is there a way of quickly population the "First Name and Last Name" fields in Active directory, for example importing from a csv file, or a command line option? At present, our students only have a username and display name specified, but we wish to add their real names to help staff locate their email address through the Outlook Address book. With nearly 2000 students, we need a better method than simply typing them all in from a list!

Does anyone have any experience of Frog Learning, and in particular it's integration with Active Directory?

Restricting recipients in Exchange 2003
AnnDroyd replied to AnnDroyd's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
You don't have groups as such. All you can change is the default setting, then over-ride this for individuals. It appears to be the individual setting that isn't working in our case. -
We want to restrict the number of recipients that a student can send an email to (in order to stop chain mail, etc). However we need staff to be able to send to an unlimited number of people so that global distribution lists are not affected. We have tried to do this by setting the default value in Exchange System Manager to 5 recipients, then manually changing the value for each member of staff to around 250. Unfortunately, the default restriction still applies to staff. Is this a known issue with Exchange 2003? Is there a better way of achieving this?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've just tried that, and tested it by plugging in a Microsoft USB mouse. Unfortunately it still brings up the found new hardware wizard. Surely with USB and plug and play stuff it should just wait a few seconds then be ready to use?
-
Since upgrading all our XP clients to Service Pack 3, we have noticed that whenever you plug in a USB device, the "Found new Hardware Wizard" apepars. You then have to choose install automatically and press next a few times before this goes away and the device is ready to use. Previously this didn't happen - there was simply a delay whilst window found the device, then it would work. Is there a way of setting up Windows so it automatically chooses "search for drivers automatically" and completes the wizard silently?

I have tried that, and unfortunately it makes no difference. The PDA in question is actually an iPhone. The device is too small and fiddly to use regular OWA, and it's client won't connect to our mail server via imap or pop3, despite the relevant ports being open on our firewall.
-
When accessing OMA, we receive the attached error. Is there a solution to this or an alternative 3rd party product we can use for access OWA on PDAs?
-
We have the EMA module but are not able to use it. The field for the student reference number in the SIMS module doesn't accept the new format of numbers provided by EMA. Capita are apparently working on this problem but no timescale has been given for a resolution.

Can you use WSUS to install one specific update? The Microsoft redistributable package turns out not to be. It's a 2MB file which then connects to the Internet to download the rest. Still can't make a package out of it even if that works.
-
Does anyone know how we can deploy Microsoft .net Framework 3.0, service pack 1? It is required for certain aspects of SIMS.net to function correctly. It's not available as an MSI, so can't be done that way. I've tried making a Ghost AI package to deploy, but AI snapshop consistently crashes part way through the second scan. Any ideas? We need to get this on 130 teacher's laptops, so installing it manually isn't viable.

I am trying to restore our Exchange 2003 permissions back to their original defaults via the Delegation Wizard. Can anyone tell me what groups and roles should originally exist in here (ours have been changed and I don't know what was there to begin with. A screenshot is attached to show you what I'm talking about. Thanks

We keep getting phone calls from a company that sounds like "pentecost" or something similar. Everytime they get through to the ICT office, they hang up. Has anyone heard of this company?

I have a standalone PC, connected to the Internet. There are two local user accounts: staff and student. I wish to restrict the student account so it only has Internet access between certain hours. Is there a simple way of achieving this, or a piece of freeware software that can block certain users according to a schedule?
-
Does anyone know anything about this company? They started a large scale projector installation for us before Christmas and now, with only about 6 installs to go, we haven't seen any more of them! Emails are not being responded to, and I cannot get in contact with the appropriate person by phone. Has anyone else had any dealings with these people or know anything about them? Does anyone know of a FREE provider of safety camera POIs for TomTom GPS systems?

Has anyone found a good solution for disk quota'ing? We currently use Spaceguard from PNL Tools but have found a problem with it: It always allows a user to finish saving the current file. If this happens to be a 500MB video file, then it results in them being well over their limit. Suggestions of a better solution would be welcomed.
