Hey jallsop did you ever find a solution to your Smartboard issue? I just had one do the same thing. It flashes a green light when connected, but the PC never sees it. If I press the little reset button on the side the PC will act like its connected but the light just flashes amber and the connection wizard sees a device but has a message about the bootloader. When I tried the firmware updater it failed to find a device. Sounded like we had a very similar experience just thought I'd see if you'd found any fix before I sunk too much time in troubleshooting this thing.
