HP V1910 == ex 3Com 2928/2952 Baseline SFP Plus == rebranded H3C S5120-SI (with some softwarelocks, i.e. no IRF stacking, no "official" CLI): nice feature set, but with loud fans. For the price it´s a bargain. HP 1810 == It´s HP lowcost really basic managable switch, but without "Procurve OS" (which you have on e.g. 25XX, 3500/3800/5400/8200), something else, almost no features, but fanless. For that price you can have other fanless switches with more features (No, not the Cisco/Linksys SG300 of course. And no, I haven´t that Zxyel GS1910, or that DLink DGS-1210, so I cannot say anything about them. So, this is only about looking at the datasheets) also look at Cisco´s "comparison": http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps10898/miercom_report_smb_switch_comparison.pdf, although I do not believe everything printed there.

We once had a public tender, most expensive bid was Avaya. Alcatel did the lowest one. I personally have a Snom 370 phone up and running for years and I like. Nowadays for education sector, Microsoft Lync is really interesting, because of its integration into the rest of Microsoft portfolio (exchange). Also pricing is great for us. If you have enough man power you can go for opensource solution.

We have no 10Gbe backbone, but 1Gbe links with LACP running, because we have enough fibers and most of our core hardware doesn´t have any SFP+ slots. 10Gbe was once damn expensive some years ago. Most of our traffic is within the datacenter. How many users do you have in total? I cannot believe those 250? can make such traffic... But nowadays, well each cheapish hardware does have SFP+ slots. Don´t look at the hardware specs. Of course the hardware of XSM7224S is looking well, but when did it receive the last software update, patches? What about real software upgrades? Have you ever thought about something like virtual routing instances? Go for strong software support and avoid HP with its Comware OS. Yes, I was once really glad to got those switches in a public tender, but now, well, let me put it like this: If you need a bugfix you will be kind of doomed. And those switches have some weired bugs noone seems to be interested fixing them...

Just curious, which kind of problems? Routing / layer 2 loops? Packet drops?

I tested in different (computer class) rooms with 16 to 32 computers, no printer, nothing. computers are decent. copying GB files from one to another I get ~115 MB/s. That´s real Gbit/s. Copying that one from one class room to another I get the same performance. What throughput do you get? Which NIC driver to you use? Does anyone use some other multicast imaging tool?

I actually have some nice switches (H3C S5500/S5800) and capable server hardware, but only have that low throughput. Asking myself whether it has something to do with the NIC driver. That 800 MB/minute is close to 100Mbit/s, although it says it is connected with 1Gbit.

The 3Com 4800G is not based upon (old) 3Com techniques, it´s a relabeled H3C S5500-EI, You read the PDF above, did you? - ebay archive - Currently 870,-£ for HP E4800. Don´t know that uk-shop, though. The 2910AL may have the better hardware, but is a cut down version of the 3500yl softwarewise. Software is more important than hardware.

Buy a HP E4800 (== 3Com 4800G, HP A5500-EI, H3C S5500-EI) instead. The HP 2910al nor the 3500yl is a core switch. Sometimes you can get the 4800 pretty cheap @ebay. Get the one with at least a white HP label on it, if you buy refurbished/used. With the HP label on it, you get HP lifetime warranty, without you don´t. You can actually "transform" a "3Com 4800G" into a "H3C S5500-EI" by "brand h3c" as of R2215. I think you need to do _hidecmd before that. With current software it shows "HP A5500-EI" afterwards, I think. HP actually set the E4800G EOS, but further sells the A5500-EI. Pricing of A5500-EI is of course higher than E4800G

Talking about HP or H3C, they throw in feature by feature, but they really don´t fix their bugs and security holes, although they are tested and confirmed by hp networking support team in GB. Of course, I´m not a big customer at all. But I really hate it when I´m either told to wait for the next release again and again, or that the next level hasn´t looked at the problem at all. So, what would be the next step forward? So please give me an alternative to a V1910? Perhaps with some SFP+

Well, all H3C based wireless equipment won´t be sold any longer within Rest Of World, only within asian countries, starting with year 2012, if I remember correctly. Only those of us who already bought H3C equipment will be able to buy some additional access points (I think it was H3C 2620E?). So basically all Colubris based MSM series will be the future. HP makes a lot of advertisement for the next big firmware release 6.0

Well, that´s right, but if you have equipped your server with SFP+ NICs and now you have no money left to buy a 10Gbe switch ;-)

So, you want to buy one(?) core switch. Looking at the HP 8200 series, it can be equipped with two fabric and management modules, is advertised with non stop switching as well. Also, if you want 10GB interfaces, take the V2 hardware and get the premium software.HP.pdf

Hi, my budget for networking equipment has been cut down for the next years. Great :-( So, why not looking for refurbished networking equipment? No problem I thought. Well, for Cisco you have many resellers where you get everything with low prices. And years ago I used those very often. But now we are now mostly a HP (well actually H3C) user. And here is the problem. I cannot find resellers of selling those switches. Of course, there´s ebay, where I can buy one switch, but for the next few years, I actually do need a lot of more devices. So, does anyone know a reseller in Europe/Germany that sells those ones?

Well, be happy if you find one switching series that support it for know. Don´t complain about HP if in future releases those SFP modules are denied. Do not cry if a damage occurs and HP will let you pay for that. Nobody can tell you what you want.

compatible SFP modules work very well also in HP´s Comware based A5500 series. Simple update the firmware to the latest one. HP can be very very angry, if there´s a fault, a non HP component is responsible for.
