He's rolled in at 8.40 this morning (well after the bell...) and i'm not sure yet whether to leave him a little gift... Or, I might just leave things as they are. There is, after all, a box of used Coca Cola bottles (and tissues, and other rubbish) that he left on the floor by our server cabinet when he went to India for a month in March. I was so incensed that I tipped said rubbish into a box and sealed it, and left it under his desk in the server room. We've now moved out of the server room (moved in June) to a new office, but he STILL hasn't opened that box up... I'm so glad I won't be there when he does ;-)

Goes without saying really... today is officially my last day working in a school environment. I'm officially employed by the school until the 1st Jan, but due to Christmas and holidays owing, I finish this afternoon... (not that I'm grinning like a hyena on smack or anything )

Well, I think we have sorted this out... I think the council had 'removed' DeepFreeze to the point that they had 'thawed' the machines and uninstalled it for us. What remained, however, was the Prog Files directory, and a startup message. That wasn't obvious until I did some digging with the 6thformer... I think - hope - that there should be no more references now (fingers crossed)

We've been gifted 60 machines from our local Council which appear to have had DeepFreeze installed on them. It looked to have been removed, in that when logging on locally, there was no evidence. However, since popping the beasties on our Domain, when we log in a Deep Freeze message pops up ("Please note that DeepFreeze is in use on this machine!"). There doesn't appear to be a DeepFreeze option in the add/remove programs, nor anything in the Program Files directory. The only answer on Google is very long winded and mentions booting the machine in 'thawed' mode (if I knew what that was I'd try it), so I'm a little stumped... (posted on behalf of our 6th form 'assistant' who is currently trying to sort these machines out for DT)

The space hoppers are still around, mind... as are the random pieces of art. We are such happy people here, and it's so radically different. All these roundabouts make us dizzy you see ;-)

You're assuming that the NM knows of edugeek, and of my login....

In gpedit.msc: Local Computer Configuration -> Computer Config -> -> Windows Settings -> -> -> Security Settings -> -> -> -> Security Options There's a 'do not require CTRL - ALT - DEL' option. In theory (I don't know if this works in practice) disabling this should force users to press that to logon. Off the top of my head (ie I'm not in work until Wednesday) I can't remember what our GPO settings are.

I would force all students to press CTRL-ALT-DEL before logging on, and set the 'interactive logon - do not remember last username' option in gpedit. Those two combined in our school mean that the students can't be bothered to go around hitting ctrl-alt-del and putting spaces in (and it times out after a certain amount of time and goes back to the prompt, doesn't it?)

(yes, I resigned this morning ) However, the role is a bit 'up in the air' at the moment as it's uncertain as to whether or not the Governors will be giving the go-ahead for recruiting my replacement. It may be as late as April. Anyway, rough specs of the job would be: IT Administrator/Technician. Must have: * Excellent administrative capabilities (because the NM couldn't organise a p!ssup in a brewery) * Knowledge of Server 2003, Exchange Server 2003 * Knowledge of Veritas Backup Exec 10 (because the NM can't use it, and always forgets simple things like putting tapes in daily) * Knowledge of Sophos AntiVirus (because the NM thinks he has this knowledge, but usually screws something up) * Excellent organisational skills, and the ability to write procedures and processes * Delegation skills (for the NM can't delegate for toffee) * Excellent hardware skills (because the NM has very few) * Excellent peacekeeping abilities (because the NM opens his mouth before he thinks) * The mindset that payrises are unimportant and unnecessary. * The ability to want to do an NM's job for a monkey's pay. * A brain cell missing to want to take the job. Must be willing: * To deputise randomly and often for the NM in his absence (late starts, early finishes, random 'sick' days and holidays when he feels like it) * To be prepared for every eventuality (because believe you me, it will happen) * To mop up the mess that NM makes (both literally and metaphorically). This will include tidying his 4 week old rubbish away, as well as sorting out why servers won't run certain scripts or uninstall that flipping program he insisted on installing for himself. Salary: TBD, if you're fortunate you'll get in the region of £19k, but more likely in the region of £15k-18k if the governing body are feeling generous. Nope, I wouldn't take it again, either...

I posted a thread a while back about replacement remotes. We had the Sanyo Pro-X projectors which some of our teachers managed to lose the remotes to. We went through the people who supplied our projectors (who in turn Promethean supplied) - a company called Tracline - who got us replacements for the Sanyos at £45 a pop. Now the staff have been made to sign for them to state that they will look after them and the dept will bear the cost of any replacement... We did think about using the 'learning' remotes, but they may actually be more attractive to thieving fingers as they'll be universally usable.

I don't know whether the company we use would be able to help, they predominantly cover the MK area but may be willing to come down to Watford. I shall PM you the details... you can but ask...

One of our supply teachers has just arrived in my office, demanding to know why we have some old machines and new machines in certain rooms, when there is a grant available, of up to £10k to schools. It's called something like 'Computers for Students' (not the Tesco one!), and he mentioned something about it being on the Dfes website, although I can't find anything. Does anyone have any info on this grant??

There is a very clear divide in our office - the woman's side, and the bloke's side... Well, I say that, I happen to sit on the side where all the random hardware gets dumped too, but desk-wise, mine is clutter-free... NM's - random envelopes scattered across, piles of paperwork, you name it, it's a mess. His idea of tidying: pile it all up and leave it in a box. (no wonder Finance give me the invoices to sign off now, he's *always* losing them). My idea: sort the wheat from the chaff and recycle the rubbish. We have shelves, but alas no cupboards (I am jealous now)

Now I have no idea if this is related in any way, but we had something similar with a direct-linked printer and the machine wouldn't pick up any of our networked HPs... you could try if nothing else: In gpedit.msc on the local machine: Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Printers I set the top one "Allow Printers To Be Published" to 'enabled'. I know that theoretically it shouldn't have anything to do with it, because that setting *should* publish any direct printers that are shared, but strangely enough after a reboot ours picked them all up. Don't ask...!!!
