I think the above conversation explains why my e-mail notifier works out of school but not in school ! On the subject of getting settings changed that we don't have authority for I was told to just log a call and they will see what they can do ! We had a user getting blocked because of too many open sessions. BTLS have changed our default timeout to 2 hours from 6 hours and the user in question is not having that problem anymore.

Forget the RSPB !, do the Birds know what you are planning Have they signed consent forms ! I think it is a cynical attempt to get page hits !, just think of the keywords; birds, webcam, school .... 8O Perhaps you could install a wheel for them to power the camera .. Ooops ! forgot that was the hamster cam project . Someone did mention doing something like this on the lancs forum in April 2005, but never said how they got on. I guess you will mount camera behind a glass panel to provide separation, and colour is a bit academic cos I imagine it will be in dark mode most of the time. Can you get better deal on B/W cameras ?

What hardware are you using ? I ask because smoothwall is often installed on ancient computers as a cheap firewall. Dansguardian content filter needs a significantly more powerful system which you should not under estimate ! I have been using IPCOP, with the add-ons and I have now removed it because it was causing too many problems. 90% of stuff worked just fine and it did the job really well, but I think the problems may well have been caused by the hardware not being up to the job ! I think Spec was 400MHz Celeron, 64MB RAM, 4GB HDD. Very simple websites all loaded without any problems, but anything a bit complicated just wouldn't load. Usually anything with asp. i.e. AA route finder, Google Earth, etc. etc. The sites were not blocked !, you just got site not found errors. Excluding the domain from the filter made no difference ! It could also of been ME not being up to the job I guess but I only have limited time.

I remember an ISDX (digital PBX) system that had optional analogue ports on some of the digital handsets, to allow modems and faxes to be connected. Do your phones have anything like that ? There was one good thing about analogue extensions, they were mostly industry standard and you could just plug any phone in. Digital extensions are often setup for just that handset model and need to be reprogrammed if you move a handset, (or featurephones as I think they like to call them !!). The link to the BT exchange may well be ISDN, but the extensions are probably proprietry. The ISDX I mentioned did have another handset with an ISDN-2 socket, but it was also optional. How about you tell head you need a dial-up line for backup in the server room !

If by UPLINK cable you mean a C19 to C20 cable, and you need a cable quickly. Chop off one end and fit a 13 A plug. Unless of course H&S wouldn't allow that I think you can still buy 13A plugs ! I don't think you need to worry about ring mains, etc., etc. A ring main can actually supply up to 30-32A, but under the IEEE regulations all outlets should be fused to 13A max. It is the total for the ring which should not exceed 30-32A. 13A @ 230V would allow up to 2990W which is above the 2700W rating. I think the 16A is the cable rating and not the supply requirement. The spec doesn't actually give the input power, which will be higher than 2700W, but I am sure it will be within 13A, and is usually stamped by the input connector. Beyond that spec you would need a hard wired supply, say 40A, or even a 3-phase supply to the UPS, like in the good old days of IBM Mini's and Mainframes, etc, etc. I think I would go for the: rather than mess about with mixing in C14 connectors. Although you probably have loads of old PC power cables stashed somewhere, like the rest of us . Just shows if you shop around, what you can save though ...

The technet.org.uk site is questioning whether to close down or not !! http://www.castlehills.lincs.sch.uk/forum1/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=572 I agree that the more sites the better in some respects, if it increases coverage. But equally, having to search through several forums for answers is time consuming. On a similar note, is the lancs forum still active ?, or has everyone moved over here ?

As has been stated, you can charge without a computer. You do have to connect the mains charger through the serial cable, which is the same as the serial activeboards. You can also connect to a computer with the drivers loaded and use the slate as a graphics tablet (which is, lets face it, all an activeboard basically is). Standalone you point at infrared in corner of board, but I agree that it can take some getting used to. The problem is that you have to look at the whiteboard as you write on the slate, whereas normally you look at what you write. We have three and I don't think they get alot of use !!

From memory (it was along time ago !) I had one with the expander which gave two extra ports. It only fitted on certain UPS models which had the expansion slot. Also there were two basic types of UPS, intelligent and non-intelligent. The intelligent model used the port as a true serial port and exchanged all sorts of status data, etc. I think they were the SMARTUPS range. The non-intelligent model simply presented basic on/off signals on certain pins to indicate the power state. That might explain why the cable used is significant. If you can find a detailed spec for the port for your model you might find that a simple 9-pin to 9-pin null modem cable would suffice.
