Due to getting a EES we are upgrading to windows 7. Lanview4 appears to be working fine, apart from it no longer shows who is logged into the pc on the admin console. The XP clients still show the username, but the windows 7 32 & 64bit are blank. Is there anything I can do to resolve this ? Also, in the help for locking clients to only respond to the server by its IP, it says; [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MST Software\LanView3\Client] I don't have a 'MST Software' in regedit on a pc running client v4. Searches of the registry reveal the LV4Client.exe is shown in source paths as normal, but also under a folder called [LEGACY_LV4Client.exe] but nothing under local machine or software. If I go ahead and add it manually to a client, it doesn't take any notice of it

I think I can shed some light on whats happening. They will start by using a free app like 'Ping Range' from softpedia and leave the app running on a range of ip's pinging each one on port 21, making a list of the ones that reply. These IP's will then be attacked by brute force attempts to gain access. Why ? Once they get access, they create a structure of hidden folders (to windows) and store porn, movies, whatever on your ftp server. They will then post the details on a forum for other members to download. This was rampant when server 2003 was released, since installing the IIs component for a intranet or webserver also installed a ftp with default admin user/pass. And those guys usually had good speed and plenty of storage. Easiest way to stop all this is to change port, block pings and never use a account with the username 'administrator' or 'admin'. And check your logs often

I was on the receiving end of a short notice departure. The guy I took over from had a 1 month notice he gave at the end of january 2005. Advert went out first week in febuary, my interview was on the 15th. Then he went to china with the school on the 16th for 2 weeks as a prebooked holiday that took him upto leaving date. Worked great. Set the red card to 192.168.54.5 with a 255.255.255.0 subnet and gateway 192.168.54.1 and put the proxy in the upstream proxy part and we are in business.

Having trouble finding the right settings for the red card in ipcop, i will explain the settings I know.... Our network IPs from lea - 172.29.24.* to 172.29.31.* with subnet 255.255.248.0 IPCop Green Lan is set to - 172.29.24.245 with 255.255.248.0 subnet. This works enough to get me to the webpage admin and should let everyone in the school access the proxy/firewall. We have also got a range of 192.168.54.* with 255.255.255.0 Our cisco router provided by the lea that i can't configure has an ip of 192.168.54.1 Now our domains DNS server in school is on 172.29.24.4 The LEA provide a proxy of 192.168.35.67:8080 (no auth) The proxy has a dns of 192.168.35.32 and 192.168.35.34 I tried about 8 installs today with different gateway, subnet masks and DNS I thought should work, but none of them seem to. I'm sure some genius will look at these numbers and know exactly what to put in the red cards settings

Without exchange you need some extra syncing apps and things like tasks in the webpage calendar don't work from outlook. But the apps are allways changing so maybe a better one will turn up soon for us stuck without exchange.

Has anyone got the gmail calendars fully working with outlook ? Every bit of info i can find requires an exchange server inside our domain to do this, but our LEA will only allow port 80 traffic so we never bothered and the reason we use gmail. The connecter apps helped but for 'tasks' i still need to use the webpage calendar. I'd say about 140 of 150 staff prefer to use a browser anyway. We have been using it for 4 months and the staff love it. We plan to issue headsets soon and use google talk internally to replace some phones. We had to turn off the docs feature for the pupils though, took them about 15 minutes to work out they could open a word doc, invite their friends to collaborate and use it as a chatroom.

We run 5 'video editing' pcs with premier elements. Since we only have 2 classes for media, i made those students members of a ou=media, then restricted only those members can logon to the machines. They all have 2 x 500gb hds in a mirror. There is a projects folder on C: we give them rights to save to without quota. This is backed up to a 2tb nas every lunchtime with a sync app scheduled. The kids know if any work gets deleted or messed with they will get found out. On a side note for the original post, we have serif movie x3 in the normal ICT suites and often have 60 or 90 kids editing videos over a gigabit lan without problems. Same can't be said for adobe products. And for a cool, free converter to get those pesky mp4's into premier i use a app called 'super©' .
