They don't have the same duty of care and safeguarding requirements that a school or other similar educational establishment has, for a start. Annoyingly enough, I can't find the link just now, but a little while ago my college was sent a govt. publication that discussed how safeguarding, prevention of terrorism,etc. might apply to web filtering requirements. If you're an educational establishment then your filtering guidelines should be in line with your safeguarding policy, but I'd strongly suggest that any organisation that provides an internet connection to staff and certainly customers should be blocking the Internet Watch Foundation's watch list at a bare minimium.

There's nothing wrong with using wikipedia as a starting point for research, but in general I agree with the teacher here. It's not an actual source. Anyone can edit it at any time, after all. I'd suggest that any source needs to be read with a critical eye, and (as I don't know anything about your school or that particular class) this may not be a skill that the class have developed adequately to deal with a resource that can be edited by someone else in the class who just got there quicker than everyone else to claim anything they liked.

When you remember having to manually key in a hex bootloader in order to bootstrap the operating system, which was then loaded from punched paper cards, in order to boot up a mainframe that you then interacted with using a telex style keyboard and printer. I can't remember the hex key sequence, but I remember that once it had booted you had to type in [ctrl-y]TT[ctrl-Y] to tell it to start listening to the telex keyboard.

To do this natively you need to install the client for NFS, via windows features, services for NFS, client for NFS. This is only available in enterprise and ultimate, so as you say, you're out of luck with Pro. That leaves 3rd party software. Not tried it myself but a brief search throws up nfsAxe - Windows NFS Client and NFS Server for Windows

While there's a good deal of value to be had from just moving from a mix of switch patches to one standard config, I honestly can't imagine how bad the network would have been to make anything from netgear an upgrade. I'd especially love to know why the core switch infrastructure appears to be a bunch of stacked edge switches.

I'd like to think they'd be responsible about it but if your school printed all the data off, put it in a physical storage warehouse space they'd rented and stopped paying the bills for that space what would happen? Eventually the owner of the warehouse would want to reclaim the space right? Nothing magic happened here just because the warehouse is digital instead of "physical" imho.

There's also the issue of the impact on the environment of a running turbine - it could be dangerous to birds, and a field of them will alter the wind to unpredictable effect - if only to make the energy returned from a turbine farm much less than predicted. I'm a little suspicious of any point of view that suggests it's all cut and dried one way or the other. There's a lot of devils still to be found in all the details of all the options.

For me the issue is about consent, not content. While there's nothing wrong with Horsemeat, if you order beef you should get beef. If you order pork you should get pork, and so-on. If people start thinking a bit more about what they eat and start to wonder what's really in those burgers at 8 for £1 and so-on, that's a good thing really.

BMS = Building Management System. Automated/clever systems for managing site heating, power, etc. If they're using that, they'll want it networked. Even if they don't know it yet.

Before you try and decide what infrastructure you need, you need to be sure you've gathered all the user requirements and assumptions. You mention classroom requirements... that's good but where might they expand to in the future? Is wireless assumed? If you need wiring and server infrastructure to support that. What about provision for computers in offices, staffrooms, etc? As FN-GM says, what about VoIP phones (if someone says you're not using VoIP phones then either you're re-using your current system, which is fair enough, or in this day and age I'd question that decision quite strongly). Support for BMS, security systems?

We just set the VM concerned so that it couldn't be migrated, then we make sure to tell the people who purchased this bit of software that this is what they get for purchasing virtualisation-unfriendly software if they have any availability issues.

If "normal people" don't understand what the point of glass is, then either it needs to come with a demo that not only makes that clear and compelling, or it's going to become another Nexus Q. I have to say I've watched the demo and thought "clever, but a little bit creepy and doesn't really solve any problem that *I* actually have". Agree. There are some games that work well, better even on a tablet but there are also some games that work better on a big TV, and some games that work better on a PC. I think it would be a shame if one of those segments killed the others off. I do think that tablet/smartphone devices are going to be king at casual gaming. But that's where they excel.

I don't know what's odd about it - shameful certainly but not odd. Far too much educational software is made by people who appear to have never actually used a computer before in their lives. Or at best, have what the charitable person might call "unconventional views" about how to build applications.

I still like my Apple phone... At the end of the day though its a personal decision, whatever feels nice in your hand and whose interface makes the most sense to you. Oh and if you've invested a lot of money into apps on Android, that has to be taken into account too.

You're right, you don't have to miss out the 9 from internal systems. Not sure what you mean when you say you haven't seen a single system that had this set up this way; all the systems I've worked with can allow you to configure all kinds of responses to different patterns of numbers being dialled and "999", "911", "112", etc are just a bunch of numbers to an internal phone system, so it's simply down to the phone system's admin how those are processed. In my opinion it makes things better if someone dialling '999' in a panic doesn't get an unresponsive phone. Not everyone will agree but that's how I see it. And you're also right that re-directing to the switchboard/security is a good and sensible idea. Totally agree. That's what we used to do until someone got in a flap and decided it was wrong and ordered us to change it. But routing emergency calls to an internal emergency call handling system of some kind is different from making people dial four 9s for the emergency services.

I've checked the first 3 pages and there's nothing solid there about buying reviews that I can see... just a lot of rumour and innuendo from sites likely to be biased against Microsoft (and thereby perhaps more prepared to print and believe the worse). Now while we'd all be fools to believe the sort of "astroturfing" discussed in some of those articles does not go on, it's hardly what I asked for is it? Please don't waste my time. Well no, perhaps I couldn't. If someone asserts (well implied here, to be fair) something then it's reasonable to ask them to defend their assertion/implication: Evidence of Microsoft paying a "reputable" publication for a good review.

You're not worried that someone will need the emergency services and will be in too much of a panic to remember that stuff under pressure? Or that someone who is unfamiliar with your system, a new starter say, is the one that has to make the call?

*citation needed* If you're implying that happened, then again *citation needed*. I've not met many people who have a Windows phone, but all of the ones I have met have been pleased with it. Including a few students.

And I tried it for a month and then rolled back to Windows 7 as I had a large number of problems with it. Not just the start menu interface but other things too. There are good things in there but for me they were outweighed by the bad. If only people would give other members the benefit of the doubt instead of assuming they all said "no start button and then urghh". The question here isn't whether or not it's good for home use, that's a personal choice at the end of the day. The question here is how well will it behave in a professional educational environment. And I for one have my doubts about it doing well in the environment where I work.
