Ok, so finally took plunge and installed 8.1 pro. Already missing the windows 7 start menu e.g. search : on windows 7 I can 1) press "windows key", 2) start typing "u" and it matches "Active directory Users and Computers" 3) press enter i.e. 3 key presses to launch ADUC snap in 8.1 search is similar but can't do it in 3 key presses and my finger muscle memory is pretty well trained :-) So can I get back my old "windows 7" start menu e.g. from microsoft (or upstream from windows 10) or 3rd party or can I tweak 8.1 search to make it more like in win 7 ? Somebody said IObit have a start menu drop in, anybody used it or recommend others ?

Hi, I'm trying to deploy office 2010 via a group policy startup script as described here PeteNetLive - KB0000464 - Deploying Office 2010 via Group Policy However when a PC boots up it just goes straight to the login screen. I can login and see (e.g. via process explorer) that setup.exe is still running The .bat startup script calls start /wait %DeployServer%\setup.exe /config %ConfigFile% After about 20 minutes the PC just reboots and the .bat logs error code 1641 (ERROR_SUCCESS_REBOOT_ INITIATED). After logging in again office 2010 seems to have been installed ok. If I'm rolling this out to lots of PCs I want it to install fully before a user can login (i.e. they will have to wait for 20 minutes!) as once they're logged in they could e.g. start word 2003 and mess up the install ? So how can I force the startup scripts to finnish before the logon dialog is available ? Thanks

Says 24566MB and "automatically manage paging file size for all drives" ticked After I installed new RAM the server wouldn't boot on first attempt: just several beeps and nothing on monitor. Tried again and it booted ok! Also couldn't login "locally" this morning: the keyboard and mouse plugged into the server are not responding. However I've managed to get in via mstsc and checked administrative events for errors: nothing unusual. Resmon still showing the odd hardfault and memory has crept up to 47% used of the 24GB installed (mainly sqlsrvr.exe)

Hi, We've just upgraded server memory and resmon is showing only 23% used physical memory. Before the upgrade it was reaching 98%. Yet I'm still getting quite a few hard faults a second which I thought you only got when it's paging? So why would it be paging when so much memory is free ? Are there any utils I can run to check the health of the server, esp the new memory to make sure its good ? E.g. could a DIMM be dodgy or maybe a connection as server motherboard was very dusty?

Ok sounds a good plan. When you say security filtering I guess you mean in the GPMC? ie remove authenticated users and just add another group with my user in ?

Hi, I've linked a GPO to a "top level" Users OU. Under here are other OU's e.g. staff, pupils etc The GPO is to set internet proxy via registry (FYI: the GPO is a based on Michael's post #23 http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-7/110567-ie10-proxy-setting-windows-7-a-2.html Now I want to override this just for one user in a lower down OU (which has other users in it who I want to keep the current proxy setting). E.g. I can log on as this user and set their proxy manually in IE but after a GP refresh it reverts back to the GPO setting. If it makes any difference, at a later date I may want all users in the lower down OU to have the new proxy setting. Whats the best way to sort this. Thanks

Yes I tend to use RSAT for that reason: so I don't need to remote on to server. So are you saying the official google instructions are wrong ? : http://www.chromium.org/administrators/windows-quick-start Also I have a C:\Windows\sysvol\domain\Policies\ but I have no PolicyDefinitions folder under there! If I create one and copy in adm and adml ? Will that fix RSAT not seeing chrome settings in GPMC ?

So I'm installing chrome as per Windows Quick Start - The Chromium Projects Copy the chrome.admx file to %SystemRoot%\PolicyDefinitions Did this on the server. So far so good but when I use GPMC on a win 7 machine with RSAT I can't see the new settings to edit them. Do I need to copy chrome.admx file to %SystemRoot%\PolicyDefinitions on th local win 7 machine as well to edit them from there?

Forgot to update this. Looks like was a windows bug. Turned off offline files and all ok again

Hi, I've got an issue with folder redirection not working. Looking in the logs in eventvwr.msc I can see the error is failed to apply policy and redirect folder can not create folder access is denied This is odd as the folder does exit on the server. Looking at the share on the server I can see the share permissions are full control for everyone and the ntfs permissions are full control for staff group Also when logged on as a staff member if I try to access the hidden share via \\server\share$ I get You do not have permission to access \\server\share$ which makes me think there is some fundamental permissions problem rather than a group policy issue with folder redirection. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this further or is there something obvious I am missing? Thanks

Just had another thought: wonder if I could turn off folder redirection (e.g. set as not configured?) for pictures, music and videos and just leave on for documents. Has anyone got any experience of doing something similar ? At the moment folder redirection for pictures, music and videos is just "Follow the Documents folder" So ends up on the server. I've asked staff to put their pictures/videos/music on a separate share I've created for them but they keep ending up in My Pictures. E.g. they plug in a camera via USB in windows 7 and import wizard imports them to "My Pictures" (Might post as new thread as going off topic a bit here)

Interesting, I didn't know there was such a policy. I've thought about quotas but tricky to do given some staff already have "exceeded" their quota. Also thought about turning off offline files via policy but again they are useful for some people. I guess I'll just have to do an experiment and see what happens.

We've got mainly windows 7 clients and server 2008 R2 Noticed a lot of staff are storing jpg's to their "My Pictures" which is redirected to the server Some staff also have the "My Pictures" folder available offline. I want to clean up e.g. move / delete these jpgs from the server (and the avi / mp4 / mov in their My Videos !) but what will happen if I do this on the server ? Will offline files just sync them back to the server when their laptop connects to the network again ? If so does anyone have any advice on how to "fix" this. Thanks

So a Governor brings in a laptop for me to take a look at. Well it felt like an episode of antiques roadshow as I opened the case to reveal an HP Pavilion, must be over 10 years old. I was even more surprised to find it boot up to the logon screen in 42s and then to find a PIII 696MHz running XP SP2 and office 2007 surprisingly smoothly esp. given it only has 128MB RAM !!! Somebody once told me XP needs at least 256? But this machine was "flying"! So whats your oldest bit of working kit ?

Thanks all for the useful info. I hate the ribbon too but maybe I will get to like it. Most PCs here still on Office 2003 but that's getting retired by MS in April. Shame as 2003 seems to do everything I need, maybe it's a case of "you never miss what you haven't had".

Looks ok after testing. Made some notes as I went along: Disabled GPO link at domain. then after a gpupdate and machine reboot I see local admins are back to old values Can check members via "net localgroup administrators" So re-enabled link but tweaked members of BUILTIN\Administrators Linked a new GPO at lower down OU but used caution as "last writer wins" (not merged) Decided to create a “NewGroup” with extra admin users in and added it as restricted group then added it as a "member of" Administrators

ok thanks all, I'll do some testing and then if looks ok I'll probably edit the GPO linked at the domain level so the Administrators group has only proper admin members e.g. Domain admins Then link a new GPO with a restricted groups setting to a lower down OU e.g. "office computers" with say "office staff" in administrators group
