i mainly try and catch people out who lie on their CV, generaly ask questions based on there cv. if they say they know AD, ask them something anyone using AD should know. ie: whats an OU or GPO? Question's i've asked and been asked: general Q's Identify all the components in a workstation opened up in front of the person Why is a switch better than a hub? whats the difference? Whats DHCP? What do you do to ensure smooth running and reliablity of a server? mainly picking out on redundancy ie RAID etc.. What's Change Management? Give me an example of how you have had to turn somebody away whilst working on something important Tell me your daily routine or what you would expect a routine to be like? if they don't mention check the server logs and backups, they obiously don't know the tasks involved indicating they might not of even read the job spec properly How can you deploy workstation operating systems? When you make a change on the network, how would you approach the situation or be expected to do? should mention usabilty studies, manager discussions, documenting, one step at a time etc... Theres probably a thousand more questions i would choose to ask depending on the progression of the interview. Alan

you've got antivirus software on your dc? i was told that was bad... If you disable the NAV, does it lock up then? When you say freeze, can you still control the GUI? can you remote control into it? hardware would seem logical place to look, like you said, get the UBCD and do a memtest. any dust on the motherboard or RAM, that has locked a few workstations in my past job. also when you say automatic updates, do you also mean you update via the MS site? as updating the graphic drives has also locked up a few pc's in the past. don't rule out recent fixes as causing your problem. what got installed in the past 2 weeks via windows update? despite the need to update, you should wait a few days to see if anyone reports problems with the hotfixes in the MS forums. installing untested stuff on a live server is never a good thing. do you auto download and manual install, i have known of problems where a hotfix didn't install right because the server was doing something else at the time when an auto install went. servers should really be maually updated. how many times have you "safe shutdown" the server since 2 weeks ago? the hotfixes might of needed a proper reboot to initilise properly. A new adm seems likely, so does a recreation of the GPO if it's not applying successfully. http://www.gpoguy.com/Tools.htm i found this site quite useful on many occasions. hopefully it'll help with your adm creation. Alan

Hi, Deploying OpenOffice and Firefox I've made the above site for documenting customising and deploying Firefox and OpenOffice. This should work in a AD and Samba/NT4 enviroment. You can take the customising bit only if you want and deploy it how you see fit. my guides are just what i prefer to do. Let me know what you think Alan

The "Extra Settings" can happen when settings were made when the GP was edited by a node that had different ADM's for example, if you use windows 2003 server to edit the group policy and then windows xp or vice versa, you'll notice this happens. can't remember the link, but if you goto MS and look for ADM if should provide you with a package of all the latest ADM's install that on the node you use GPMC on. I'd recommend you only use one station to save this issue in the future. also if you added an ADM, made a few setting changes then removed the ADM, the settings stay. so unless you have the ADM to hand it may be the case of making a new GPO to apply to the OU. oh, is this the default domain or default domain controller GPO your editing. The general recommendation is to not edit these. Alan

Configure a reliable time service in a domain how time service works if you in a ad domain, using net time has it's limitations, you would be better to configure a domain controller as a reliable time server, with that server then syncing time external to your site. the pdc emulator within the domain should be the first the reliable time service, as all workstation try to sync time with a dc and the dc's sync with the pdc emulator. if you only have one dc then all you need to do is configure that server to be reliable time source and use the below ntp pool address to sync the time on that server. syncing with uk.pool.ntp.org would be a good idea. although just one address, there are several time servers that repsond to the address. uses round robin to contact them. our colour laserjet 3500 did this. have you used windows update on any computers and applied ms drivers to that pc? regardless of the anwser installing new drivers direct from hp should solve the issue as it did for me the reason i asked, is to help you think of when the issue started. Alan

gpinventory.exe part of the windows server 2003 resource kit once loaded: query => Select Computers to Target with Active Directory, click the checkbox and then press ok. query => Select Information to Gather and select WMI: Logged on User then press ok. Press F5 or go query => Run Query and theres all your logged on users using the computer in AD, you can import a list of computers from a text file. as long as the account your running from has the privilages to run WMI queries on a remote machine, you'll find out who's logged on. you could use group policy to restrict all applications except the ones you specify from running. you could also use the prevent installers from removable media to also help. Alan

kix runs in seconds here. i use them here and in a previous post with no issues on speed. the average logon takes 30 seconds (roaming profiles) if you're worried about speed, you could use a feature of the new version of kix, which is to pre-tokenise the scripts, this puts them in binary format ready for running and makes them slightly more secure as the eye cant read them.
