We are trying to find a solution that we can install in the school whihc allows self registration but limits any single person to 3 wireless devices. We have been in talks with Ruckus whose kit is excellent but their only solution at the moment for this requirement is to issue each user with 3 pre-shared keys. The idea of this system is to reduce our admin overhead not increase it. Is anyone out there using this kind of system and if so are there any recommendations? Thanks Mike Taylor

After a long call to VMWare Tech (2 1/2 hrs) & them remoting in the fault was traced to a fault in the locked.properties file. Recreated the file & all is working fine now.

I am in the process of building our final version of our VMWare vSphere environment for rollout over the Christmas Break. All was going well until I tried connecting remotely. Internally the connection works fine. To connect externally I have configured a View Security Server which seems to pass the requests to the View Connection Server ok. We I try a remote connection I get to login and select the required desktop. Then the View Client starts up & I get a black screen. After about 1 minute the screen goes and there is a message stating that the server has disconnected me. I am getting this with both WIndows XP 32 bit & WIndows 7 64 Bit vms. I have checked all of the Remote Users settings & can connect to the desktop using RDP so I know that the RDP service is working. Does anyone have any idea where I should be looking? Thanks Mike

I was wandering if anyone had any similar experiences to this & if so how is it fixed?: We have a UTM-1000 providing our Firewall & Proxy Services. I have just installed a vSphere Environment and am in the process of rolling it out using both internal clients and web portal clients for staff remote access. If I have the internal server configuration st to direct connect then the internal clients for the students can connect but the external connections do not work (An error in the View Log stating that the broker had disconnected). If I disable the direct connect option in the View Server Configuration then the external connections work but the internal connections for the students do not. The internal connections work for our staff who have almost unctrolled access to the web via the UTM. I have setup a rule in the UTM filters to allow all traffice to the UTM. I have setup the proxy configuration in the UTM Proxy settings as well as the GPO which controls the students to bypass the UTM by ip address & FQDN. None of these work. If I select the Transparent Proxy option in the UTM then the student access works but they have unfiltered web access. The long and short of it is that I need to have both internal and external access to work whilst keeping the students controlled via the proxy. Any ideas? I will post in the Smoothwall forum as well as I am unsure if it is a Smoothwall issue or Vmware issue. Cheers Mike

Due to nature of the beast - students & staff access the same pcs in the IT Labs so can't put in controls by IP Address. The only way to apply security is via AD Groups. We have a Smoothwall UTM-1000 in place (which all traffic passes through Internal & External) but I can't find anything that seems to be able to do this. Mike

I experienced a similar issue. Is you internal domain called walkden.uk.com as well? If so you need to add An Alias (CNAME) to your dns server called www & pointing to walden.uk.com This should do it. Mike

We have a Smoothwall UTM-1000 & two intranet servers (one for staff & one for students). I need to stop the students having access to the staff intranet server but cannot workout how to do this using the UTM or GPO. Any ideas? Thanks Mike Taylor St Leonards School St Andrews

We have a network which routes all internet access througj an ISA 2006 server. This server is now beginning to cause problems & ideally I would like to tkae it out of the loop totally. Does anyone know a hardware solution I can install in it's place? I tried removing it last year & replacing it with a load balancing/failover Netgear firewall - it workied fine over the weekend whilst I installed it but when 300 users logged in on the Monday the network stopped!! I only need the proxy to stop the firewall being hammered as I have finally managed to get our Sonicwall CSM3200 working which provides content control. Control the sites our students & staff have access to. The CSM is a great device for this just need to get it to work with our setup. Mike

I need to get this working by Wednesday next week (26th August). I have been forced to remove our outdated GFI Webmonitor as it was causing problems & now have an unprotected network. Our students come back on the 26th. I have tried this before but come up against a brick wall. I will have the network plugged into x0 then x1 will be plugged into the ISA 2006 server which is then plugged into the router. - Does this all sound correct so far? In my previous attempts I have managed top get the AD connector configured & talking to the CSM but was unable to apply any of the policies as all users wee listed as default user regardless of what I tried. I even had Sonicwall support connected remotely for a week trying to sort it - but they had no luck!! I think the issue might be caused by the fact that the ISA Server needs to be the default gateway (or does it??) & it's stopping traffic somewhere. I tried running without the ISA server just a firewall & it was fine with a couple of users logged in but when I had 300 logged in the network ground to a halt! We have just had all of our boarding students in & have now configured their laptops to use the ISA server for their connection. Of these 150 laptops 2 of them are unable to browse using the proxy. The strange thing is that the Antivirus updates through the proxy & the laptops connect fine if I bypass the proxy. Both laptops are German build windows XP Pro & as I don't understand German I am struggling with the event logs. Has anyone else come across this issue & found a resolution? For our sins we are using Surfcontrol Web Monitor at the moment sitting on an ISA 2006 server. - I hate Surfcontrol!! I have looked at a couple of other options but the prices are crazy. I would welcome any suggestions for an easy to use & configure Content Control system that interacts with ISA 2006 easily.
