Clearly not. Unfortunately I'm not the most clued up in this area and haven't had much experience with the network side of things. My role is more user/hardware/software. Although I have wanted to learn a lot more about networking and hope that having had this problem whilst the two networking people were away will help me push for training.

Finally got this sorted yesterday, well working but not fully resolved. Seems we have a cross over somewhere on the network between a VLAN 600 and a VLAN 50. When looking through DHCP scopes, computers that were actually tracked back to being patched into a VLAN50 port were kicking out the wrong IP address, our wireless was also kicking out a VLAN50 address when it should be VLAN600. Disabling the V600 scope bought everything back online, we did this a couple of times and it broke and started working again each time. We currently have our Trapeze unit turned on casting out a V50 which is fine as laptops can use that correctly. I have decided to keep the V600 scope disabled until Monday when my manager returns so that they can decide how to track it back.

Well this morning the BAD_ADDRESS was not visible in any of the scopes, I think it was under a lease and not a reservation. After doing loads of testing and just finding data it seems it may have come down to something quite simple. During the first week of the Easter holidays our switches and cabs were moved into 2 new cabs, speaking to the ICT Services today, it sounds like things may not have been plugged back in the correct places. DOH! As above, I don't usually deal with these kinds of things and we fall short from time to time on labelling and documentation so I had not picked up on this. We have someone dialled in are hopefully on our way to a fix. I'll keep the thread updated just incase anyone comes across similar problems but hopefully not everyone is as daft as we can be... not all the time, just sometimes.

We did have 1 actually yeah, not sure under which scope off the top of my head but can check tomorrow. What does this mean?

Hi Geoff, Yes in total we have 1958 and 1392 are available.

Hi, sorry if this is the wrong place and I don't make much sense but I am a bit confused and my network manager is away for the week and unfortunately I'm not that clued up in this department, so here goes... We have just returned from easter break, our network worked fine on Friday just gone but coming in this morning there are a few issues: 1) staff are not able to log in on certain computers, when logging in locally I can see the network icon in the sys tray is 'aquiring a network address' which it fails to do so. 2) 1 or 2 machines have 'limited or no connectivity' a result of timing out I expect 2) certain phones were not working (no dial tone) 3) wireless is not connecting I reset the switches on our main comms which kicked the phones back into life once they were reset also I noticed that our wireless which is broadcast on a VLAN 600 is now kicking out a VLAN50, I found this by the IP address I recieved on my iPhone I have restarted both of our DHCP servers which has done nothing. I checked the event logs on an effected PC and got an Event ID 1002 with the following error: "The IP address lease %1 for the network adapter with MAC address %2 has been denied by the DHCP server %3 (The DHCP server sent a DHCPNACK message)." My co-worker tried to do a /release /renew on an effect PC and go an access denied error, I also tried this on another machine and did not recieve the error but it timed out and gave me the following error: "An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection: Unable to contact DHCP Sever, request timed out." I have checked VLANs of affected machines against VLANs of working machines and nothing has been changed, one of the PCs is in the same room as 2 others that work and all feed back to the same switch, this is the same in a few areas across site on different switches. Sorry if this doesn't seem like a question but I am looking for some pointers or places to look, I am happy to gather more information if anyone thinks they may be able to help me out, unfortunately I cannot contact my manager as they are away on a course and I think I will only be able to get them after I will have left. Thanks in advance for anything anyone can do.

Hi Iain, Problem number 3 sounds familiar to one that we had at the school I work at. When trying to save files, the software crashes - however ours was with Fireworks, not flash. Anyway after no help from Adobe we found a solution. Not sure if it is THE solution but it's working. If you have user names that contain full stops that aren't administrators e.g. firstname.lastname you will get this error. Remove the full stops and the files would save. crazy eh

Hey everyone, So coming up to quite an important decision in my studies and I am looking for a few pointers. I have been working in a school as an ICT Technician now since 2009. When I started we ran a CC3 network and now run a vanilla Windows network compromising of XP & Server 2008 R2, moving over to Win 7 this summer. I am currently studying the MCTS and the following Comptia course: A+,N+,Server+,Security+ I have been thinking about doing a degree through the Open University but I am unsure whether this is the right thing to do, it could take up to 6 years to complete and I wonder how much credibility it will hold down the line when the stuff I learnt at the beginning is years outdated. Would I be better off looking into more IT courses such as the MCSE, CCNA etc? I hope to eventually take over as the network manager of the school I work in, although this is a long way off. Also if anyone has any other pointers, tips or things I should start doing to further help me in my long term goal it is as always, greatly appreciated. Cheers, L

Adding custom time frames into outlook calendar?
Svarcy replied to Svarcy's topic in Office Software
Hi AngryTech. Thanks for that link, I have downloaded the trial version and set it up and I actually think that combined with setting the time frames I want to show from within Outlook Cal that it could work for us. It certainly makes it easier in terms of booking things in as it just attaches itself to that time frame. Again, thanks for the help. -
Hey everyone. So in my office we used to use a web based booking system for IT equipment being loaned out across school. It was simple in that it had the days across the top horizontally and the periods of the day along the side vertically. We have since moved over to using the Outlook calendar in Office 2010, not sure why but a guy in our office thought it would be a good move and whilst I quite like it visually it obviously works in a standard day to day setting of those strange little things called hours, something most school workers have no concept of! We also have to enter the times when we had a booking manually and as our lessons aren't say 9:00 till 10:00 and vary throughout the day it can be a bit of pain. So... I wondered if anyone knew of a way in which you can customize the times that are used on the calendar to follow a school day and if possible set it so when you add an appointment (booking in our case) it picks up on the adjusted timeframes? Many thanks L

Is there a way of getting the results back for an OU in Active Directory so rather than idividually targetting the machines we can pull a classroom list back?
-
Hey guys, does anyone know of a piece of software that will pull the list of stations and users from AD and then give you a run down of which user is logged into which machine? Not after anything fancy just something that goes: Station Example: User Example: PC-01 Name-01 My school previously ran an RM network which had a feature like this in the management console, we now run a vanilla Win XP, Server 2008 R2 network and would like a small bit of a software we can pull up when needed for this. Cheers

Creating new users in AD - Not creating profile folder
Svarcy replied to Svarcy's topic in Windows Server 2008
adding them in as domain admins works. The folders create and lock correctly, if we make a template using a current students account that had worked and locked then it works correctly but with new users with the exact same permissions as previous accounts we created we then have the problem so I am unsure as to where the permissions problem lies now... if something has changed in the permissions for the students would it not effect all the previous accounts created too? -
Hi all, when creating new profiles in AD the documents folder is creating correctly however the profile folder isn't. I have checked the paths of both and they are both correct, have also checked the permissions on the top level folders to make sure that this isn't the problem. Our structure works like this: Profile path \\server\profilesstudents$\year\studentsname Documents Path \\server\documentsstudents$\year\studentsname Any ideas as to what could stop the profile from creating, it doesn't create on a log in or log off however the profile does work as it should and can see software, shared drives etc thanks!

Hi Guys, Just after some help with excel macros. I am useless with this piece of software so pleaseeee make it as easy as poss I am making a stock take spreadsheet and have a cell with an IF statement which shows 'Order Now' & 'Stock Full' based on a less than greater than value. I want to create a Macro based on this so that if the value is less than 2 the spreadsheet will automatically send out an email to the supplier with the order inside of the email so the text in the email will have to be individual for each product. I am unsure how to create Macros in Excel. I know I need to record a Macro but when I have gone to do it I am unsure of the steps I need to follow. I have also read that I will need to code the macro using JavaScript, again something I have no experience of doing. Any help will be greatly appreciated on this subject. Thanks

Hi all, A bit of a random one. Just had a guy ring up at work, unfortunately he got me, the one in the office with the least 'Office' experience. Absolutely hate the MS Office package for unknown reasons. Anyway, he has logged into one of our machines (on an RM network) and has found that when he types 'and' and presses space it is changing it to say 'pants' all quite funny but now he's gettign a bit annoyed. Any ideas why?? I'm guessing a student has changed something somewhere and thought it could be a possible custom dictionary setting?? Any help is appreciated.

Hi Guys, I just wondered if anyone knows of any or can recommend a peice of software that will identify system specification. Ideally the main thing I need is the full specs of the CPU anything else is a bonus. I already have some software that provides info for the hardrive, motherboard etc but it doesn't go into great detail regarding the CPU. Reason I ask is I work in a school, we are moving away from RM and the horrible CC3 network we have been using and going to a vanilla windows system. We need to find out the exact model of CPUs in our PCs for use with virtulization and could do without the hassle of taking them all to pieces! Cheers

Hi everyone, what network providers have rolled out the Froyo 2.2 update for Android phones, am I right in thinking its only Orange that havn't put it out there yet? Also, looking at tariffs for the HTC Desire, Orange offer an Unlimited Web & Email and T Mobile an Unlimited Web. I presume I could never read my mail on my phone if I went for the T Mobile option without extra charges? As Froyo 2.2 offers Wifi Tethering, if I hooked my laptop up to my phones hotspot I take it I could view email on there no problem as I am only using the 'web' connection from my phone? I think thats right and feel slightly daft for having to ask. Thinking of maybe getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab to hook up and use for mail and word processing etc when travelling. Cheers

Hi All, I am installing Flowol 3 on our schools CC3 network. It was previously installed and worked fine however we had our mimics built as seperate packages. We now want to rebuild the software with all mimics included in one package. I have the install guide in the Flowol Tutorial book (page 33) but it doesn't mention anything about mimics, just wondered if anyone has any experience with this or any pointers/ideas? Cheers
