Ah right, I misunderstood an earlier reply. I will want to play on a Mede8er (yet to be purchased) and also a car DVD player. The former will apparently play anything thrown at it but I am as yet unsure what format the DVD player supports, it is a Nextbase Click 10. However, I would like to convert to a popular format for future proofing, as I don't want to rip to a format that is useless in a few years time. Appreciate formats/codecs are changing with different technological advances, so what would be a safe bet? Not too worried about file sizes as I will just increase storage capacity as needed, but don't want to have to repeat this process any time soon! I guess a converter which gives me a choice of formats would be good - I can bang out some quick DVD's for the car player, but be a bit more selective for the longer term rips. EDIT : Found this about the DVD player, but not entirely sure I fully understand it.

I must be doing something wrong as AnyDVD has ripped the DVD to my hard drive and I now have a whole load of .VOB files, .IFO and a couple of .BUP!

Downloaded the trial of AnyDVD and have ripped a 2 hour film (first one that came to hand off the shelf, should've hand-picked 'Fireman Sam' or something!) and thus far it has taken circa 30 minutes to rip the DVD to 90%. This is a fairly poky machine so there are no issues with CPU or memory that I can think of. Is that sort of time usual? Is there something I need to set in the software which will reduce that time? I did take out an option about adverts and set it to go to main title, so don't know if that increases the time? I presume that children's titles which are much shorter in length will take proportionally less time to rip? I have a number of home made DVD's (family holidays/Christmas and some children's programmes) which were copied from original VHS which I want to put onto SD/HDD so I'm hoping to speed the process up where I can.

Sorry to be a numpty, but not bothered with this sort of thing before - can I ask how this all works? You 'rip' the DVD which leaves VOB files (plus a few others AIUI) on your hard drive, and then use something like MattX suggested to convert it to something your media player will recognise? This would be a brilliant solution for me much like your own setup, if I can get it to work.

What are you using to rip please? I have quite a collection of DVD's with which I would like to be able to do the same thing.

Size of Client IP Pool? My Zyxel router has this as a configurable option for my LAN, currently set to 32, but I do not understand what it means. Anyone have the time to explain please?

Personally, I'd prefer to know who it is that is disagreeing with me, as it adds value to their opinion and may even help me change mine. If this were to lead to retaliatory posting, then unless that person has a good and valid argument lined up, it is going to be obvious what they are doing anyway, so they will just look silly. I would suggest those sorts of actions will be by the minority anyway. As it stands at the moment, neg rep is nothing more than someone pressing a button which (as I now realise) can be taken with a pinch of salt, albeit a childish example of behaviour. If someone is prepared to disagree with what you say, and stand up and be counted, I have a far greater respect for them than I ever will someone who just disagrees behind closed doors. Just my 2p.

Thanks for sorting out the original 'problem'. Unbelievably, someone left some more neg rep with a "have some more" message. Having seen the responses by my peers in this forum though, I'm not too bothered now as I see it for what childish behaviour it is.

I don't recall saying the entire system should be scrapped but I don't like the fact that as a new subscriber to these forums, anyone who wasn't familiar with me would have immediately got the impression that at minus 111 rep I must be either a trouble maker or a complete numpty neither of which I hope I am! Whilst some may not be too bothered by it, I was, as it was so unnecessary. What I do think should happen, is anonymity should be removed. You would at least then know who has disagreed with you. I don't quite see why someone disagreeing with you should remain anonymous - we are all adults aren't we, surely we can deal with a little criticism or disagreement? FWIW, someone else has left a neg rep for this thread with the message "here, have some more" which I have reported to the admins. Pointless, spiteful action on behalf of the individual concerned.

So I wasn't behaving as other users would expect? I think you might want to add that that's the way 'neg rep' works for you, because the neg rep I was given was for no other reason that spite, insofar as I can tell.

Although I've been reading these forums for a few months now, I'm pretty new around here in terms of being a subscriber. I have hardly posted anything to the forums, and certainly nothing that would warrant someone 'spitefully' leaving a message "have some neg rep", meaning my rep is -111 ! Just what is it with some of the nasty people in these forums? The thread where the rep was left is no longer available, but I cannot imagine why someone would want to do that in the first place. It's really put me off bothering with Edugeek to be honest. I don't suppose who ever did it is willing to 'stand up' and explain themselves? Just what did I do that warrants you acting in such a spiteful and unwelcoming manner?

We use Pcounter here. All is does is prevent the kids from printing anything over 50 sheets at a time (we impose an initial 50 copy limit on them which obviously reduces as they print). Aside from that, when they run out of credits, we just give them some more, no questions asked. Agreed, it's badly managed by us, and therefore has been a complete waste of money, as per usual. Just the opinion of a humble observer. It could work, but even if we managed it better, we'd still get teachers moaning students can't print in lessons and can 'little johnny' have some print credits. I guess the crux of it is, we probably don't have the time to manage it, or the support of efficient classroom management (i.e Teachers) to assist us let alone a supportive SLT. If it's not your money being wasted on printing, then I shouldn't bother, no one else really is.

Regretfully, V2 isn't compatible with Firefox 3.6.7 - are you saying avoid V3 altogether? Any other alternatives?

I'm not actually sure what question I'm asking here, so let me just put it to you as I see it. I've not really paid much attention to this before, but over the last 2 days I've noticed a significant amount of adverts appearing on web pages which are relevant to recent Google searches I've done, or web sites I've visited. In particular, it's the adverts appearing within Edugeek that have been most noticeable. For example, I have been searching a lot for laptops, in particular Comet's web site. I have also been doing some research into food supplements such as Acai and Co-enzyme CQ10 I've noticed that the adverts appearing on the pages since then have been very related to these search/page visits. Clearly there is some 'probing' going on within my browsing history, so how can I prevent this? Short of clearing out my history/cookies, is there anything else I can do? I do like to keep my browsing history for the obvious conveniences in doing so, but I'm not so keen on it being 'probed' by unknown 3rd parties. As mentioned, this isn't something I've really bothered with or noticed before, but the last couple of days has really made me sit up and take notice.
