  1. Apologies if this goes over old ground... All our machines are Win7. Users are pointed at a mandatory profile (one for staff, one for students) , these were created by my old boss. He put EVERYTHING in the profile, software settings, proxy settings, start menu stuff, mapped drives... so , as you can imagine, the profiles are bulky AND full of 'old' settings. We are starting to have a play with Windows 10, this is a good time for me to scrap the old profiles and put something together that's a bit slicker. Am interested to know what people think is 'the best' way forward... most of what is in the current mandatory profiles could be done in GPO's/GPP's
  2. We do use Office 365 for email so rolling it out is easy. We are telling people that (a) we can't support home devices & (b) we can't be held responsible for any 'damage' caused by downloading the software, so I guess we are covered. So far, take-up from staff has been minimal.
  3. Hi We have the Proplus licence that allows staff/students to download a full version of Office on up to five devices. Seems like something we would struggle to support given that: * The software can be installed on almost any device * Users may already have an older version of Office installed * Users may already have a 'personal' rolling monthly contract Interested to know other people's experiences of rolling this out, did you give them the mysoftware URL and get them to sign something that said we can neither support you nor be held responsible for any problems caused by installing the software ... or??
  4. Happy new year! I can see the future getting pretty tight for ICT support staff. Schools are having their budgets slashed & looking for any way they can make a saving. Either by having one person do the work of many, not paying the going rate for a job or just farming out the services to an external company. So now might be a good time for getting out... but where's the money in ICT these days? What are the skills that are most sought after? Anyone thinking similar? Got a plan? Care to share it?
  5. I've had a look at XIBO before and that's definitely where we want to go but right now I'm more interested in the basics - the screens themselves. We have some old computers that I could hook up to screens but I really don't want the wires / have to stash PC's about, so something like this looks like a good solution "I am using regular TV's with an Intel Compute Stick running Windows 10 Education" I've read varying reviews on the Intel devices and I guess there are a ton of similar things out there... any opinions on the good / bad? Things to watch out for?
  6. Looking to set up some screens around the school as displays. Probably power-point presentations initially. Looking through some threads, it looks like my best bet might be TVs and some flavor of USB mini computer? anyone done this recently & have recommendations?
  7. Without getting too specific, could you give a little more explanation for " It is capturing more genuine esafety incidents as well which PCE hasnt detected" ?
  8. Personally I do find PCE to be a bit weird. I don't like the prerequisites. If we didn't use PCE, Java would be on *almost* no machines on our network. The child welfare people do like it but... they always go about it being the ONLY monitoring software that ticks every Ofsted box for monitoring. That sounds a bit far fetched to me but I could be wrong & am happy to be corrected. NOTE : No one from PCE (or anywhere else) has ever made this claim for PCE, it is our staff who have expressed this opinion. Are they misguide / misinformed? Or is there some truth to it?
  9. Are your child welfare / e-safety people happy with it? Any idea how it compares to PCE functionality wise?
  10. we are currently using PCE (from Future Digital) to monitor computer mis/use. We are developing an RDS server farm so that we can utilise thin clients AND provide at-home network access to staff/students. Our RDS farm is all Server 2012, PCE doesn't support Server 2012 - can anyone recommend similar products for monitoring?
  11. Hi, Interesting answers, thanks everyone. I have read that this is down to a reg key that can be toggled to off HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet Set "EnableActiveProbing" to 0 Haven't tried it because I need to read up a bit more on what it actually does.
  12. Hi, Changed ISP earlier in the year, meant I had to change proxy as well. I dish out proxy by GPP Have just started noticing that some machines have a yellow warning sign on the network icon with the message 'no internet connection' ... but all the users who have this issue DO have an internet connection. Never had this problem before we changed ISP / Proxy....
  13. Great answer, thanks. My problem all along has been that another company is programming the switches so it's been hard for me to visualise how everything connects. They've put a bit of pressure on me to come up with VLAN IDs and IP ranges & told me I need to get it all into DHCP... almost like this is in isolation from what they are doing... when it's not. I'm not sure why they have made this so complicated. A bit more communication and we could have bottomed this by now.
  14. Yeah, I think so. I think if we get everything all set up fairly solidly to start with & I understand the config of the switches, then I can tweak later. Although right now I'm still wading through the basics! If , for wireless devices, If I have a planned scope of 10.51.8.0 / 10.51.11.255 with subnet mask 255.255.252.0 And I set up the scope in DHCP with start / end IPs 10.51.8.1 / 10.51.11.254 , is the gateway still the default gateway address of my network (which is on a different scope) & if so, is this traffic routing handled within the switches themselves?
  15. It's for the wireless curriculum, if at some point (and this is probably a big IF) we end up with 900-1000 students (or thereabouts) and every student has a personal device, we'll be covered.... At least that's the plan!
  16. Hi, just to return to this : the company who are setting up the VLANs (& other stuff such as WiFi!) will provide basic training and leave us with a full operating manual. So that's good! I'm setting up the new scopes now, quick question ... and this may seem ... daft If I have a planned scope of 10.51.8.0 / 10.51.11.255 with subnet mask 255.255.252.0 When I set up the scope in DHCP are my start / end IPs 10.51.8.1 / 10.51.11.254 ?
  17. OK, hopefully this will prove useful to someone... It looks like it is a self-cert issue. I thought VMware console was available over the web but when I actually try to login I get an SSL error. Using Veeam logs I can see the login transaction failing at: Veeam.Backup.Satellite.CSatelliteViSoapConnectorServiceStub.GetCertificate(String host, Int32 port) Veeam engineer has pointed me at some KB articles & it seems fairly straightforward https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2033338 The reason my current Veeam setup with the dodgy DB connects to VCentre OK is because the connection existed before there was an SSL issue - as it's already connected Veeam doesn't execute this line of code : Veeam.Backup.Satellite.CSatelliteViSoapConnectorServiceStub.GetCertificate(String host, Int32 port) I'm still flummoxed though... How did this happen? The only thing that has changed is in summer, we swapped out two of our hosts for new ones. VMware didn't issue any cert warnings...
  18. In case anyone is following... Restarted VCenter / VMware management services - no change. Took all the VMs off a Host, restarted it, re-added the hosts & tried to add it to Veeam Backup Infrastructure - no change. Also had a third party dig deep into our VMware set up with PowerCLI and they can't find anything wrong Googling '503 server unavailable' get's me a mix of things , ranging from HTTP to DNS errors ... I'm flummoxed!
  19. From the same posting on the Microsoft forum I got the answer (but I haven't tested it) You may follow the steps below to move one notebook from one user to another user. For example, User A create class notebook AA, and User B has the access to it. 1.Before B lose the access to AA, he can open it OneNote desktop application. 2.Click File>Export>Notebook>OneNote Package>choose desktop and call it AToB. 3.On the desktop, double click AToB to open it. You will get a pop-up for un-packaging it. Choose Desktop and call it AToBB. 4.Choose AToBB in the OneNote desktop application>click File>Share>choose User B’s OneDrive for Business library or SharePoint library. Note:User B may need to Add place and enter his account to add services to OneNote, so he can see his OneDrive for Business library and SharePoint library in the tenant. 1.After moving, you can directly re-share it to other users, so they can access this “new notebook”.
  20. I've had an issue with Veeam being incredibly slow to open 'file level restore' window. Both Veeam and myself think that this is a DB issue, they've created a clean DB and attempted to add my VCentre server in backup infrastructure - they get a 'The Remote Server returned an error - 503 server unavailable' message On the backup server they can ping VCentre, they can also open a browser and log into it. The VCentre client is on the backup machine and can be connected to without issue. Because they can't connect they have had to roll back to the previous DB, even though I have restore issues I can at least run backups from this. It does strike me as odd that in this DB there exists a working connection to VCentre , although id I try and add an individual host, I get the 503 error All my VMs and VCentre appear to be working fine
  21. Hi, If a member of staff creates a group or OneNote ClassBook, they can assign co-owners. However, if they have their account disabled, the co-owners will lose access because everything exists in the creators personal oneDrive library. Is there a neat (Powershell?) way to move shared resources from one users personal OneDrive Library to another persons?
  22. Yeah, posted same question to Microsoft forum (which I find to be quite helpful & worth the effort) and got this answer Class Notebook is not used as a central management hub for all subjects. So, it’s not recommend that let one user manage all other users’ class notebook. A best practice is let every teacher have their own class notebook based on different classes and share it with others. If you want a central management hub, SharePoint sites will be a better solution as you mentioned in your original post. O365 is quite a beast, trying to pick it up on the fly is fine but I feel like (long term) I need to become a bit of an expert. Not sure how to go about that!
  23. Hi, One of our users has created a structure with OneNote ClassNoteBook for the whole school. It covers every subject + admin stuff etc. He is well down the line as far as getting it going and has a number of teachers logging in / adding resources etc. He's done it on his own and hasn't really involved me. Now I'm looking at it, a couple of things leap out. The whole thing resides in his personal sharepoint space. If I disable his account, everyone loses access... Is anyone else using ClassNoteBook? Are you using it like we do, as a central management hub for ALL subjects? Personally, I would have thought SharePoint sites would have been better for what he's doing but I'm happy for more experienced users to correct me
  24. Ah.... Great, thanks for that. We have O365 / Exchange in a hybrid config. I wonder if the member of staff tried to reset their password through O365 & that caused DirSync to create the profile on Exchange. I'll test this in a bit.
  25. Thanks, I'll check with Colin. Personally I would go for refurbs but .... staff ... big sigh ... you all know the score!
