I have had a go at installing SARG on the smoothwall box following the instructions you quoted and it seems to have gone someway to a solution. I have the SARG tab in the LOGS area and can view how to configure the reports, however the daily, weekly and monthly hyperlinks are not available. I have seen reference to saving these settings on the first use of the logs and the need to wait for the log files too build. Does this mean that 24 hours must elapse from any save of the log configuration before the logs will appear? Also is it possible to view these logs in real time? Bob

I have been asked to ensure that I can maintain a record of my users internet activity going back for at least 2 weeks. I run Smoothwall Express 3.0 as a transparent proxy. Now I thought that Smoothwall was based on SQUID and recall having seen these logs on our old SQUID proxy so I guess they exist on the server. My question is how do I extract these logs in an intelligible form so that I can answer questions like what sites were viewed from a particular workstation at a particular time. Bob

My network has two Win 2003 servers each running a DHCP service. This means that when a lease expires it can be a race to to find the first available address from either server so machines frequently change IP address. I need to be able to keep track of the IP address history of each workstation on my network (300+ XP machines) for at least the previous 2 weeks. I know I can look up their present IP address in the DNS but I want a simple quick way to be able to check the IP a machine was using at any given time over the past fortnight. Bob

Hi All I have a Fog server which which works well imaging/cloning Dell 280 and Dell 330 machines. I am having trouble registering a Dell Vostro 1510 that I have just set up with XP pro. I am sure the PXE boot is OK because I get to the first Fog screen where I select the option to reigister the machine on the network and perform the full inventory, but there it effectively stops. The machine seems to attempt to execute a series of commands and will eventually (30 minutes plus) display the Fog (lineprinter style) message and then executes a few more commands but never seems to get to the point where I can enter the machine name etc. I have done some Google searchs and searched this site but failed to find a solution, but did find others reporting similar problems with Fog and Vostros. Any ideas? Bob

Hi all I have been using Fog with good results on Dell 280 and 360 machines. I would like to image some older Solar computers (New July 2003 so should be PXE compatible) The machines do not have integrated NICs so I cannot find any reference to PXE boot in the BIOS settings as I do with the more recent Dells using integrated NICs. Any thoughts on how to get these to PXE boot? Bob

Problem solved now. Port forwarding was working all the time. The problem was with the group policy setting the proxy set up in IE Many thanks to FN-GM for taking the time to reply with helpful suggestions. Bob

I will give it a go today, but since the settings for the IE already point to 10.0.0.1 and tell it to use port 3128 I am not sure how this will be different except for not giving IE the information about what port to use. Remember I can manually configure a browser (as administrator) to point to c***.xxx.sch.uk and internet traffic passes through the smoothwall OK. The original IE settings (10.0.0.1:3128) worked with the old Squid proxy. I have not enabled DHCP on the smoothwall box because I do not want another DHCP server on my network. (I already have two running, one on each of my Win 2003 servers) The only place I have set a gateway is on the Interface tab of the Networking screen where it asks for the server gateway In this section I have set the server gateway to 172.xxx.xxx.1 and given the IP addresses of two DNS servers on the county council WAN. Ihave I got this wrong? Does this section need information about the Green zone rather than the red zone? Bob

Hi 10.0.0.1 is my default gateway. The IE settings (set as a GMO) are 10.0.0.1 on port 3128. The internal (green) interface of the smoothwall box has the address 10.0.0.1. I have tried both transparent proxy on and off to no avail. Are you suggesting clearing the IE settings in the proxy GMO? Bob

I am trying to set up a Smoothwall Express 3.0 proxy to allow my school network to connect to the internet supplied by our county council. The new setup is to replace an old Cobalt Qube that has failed after 9 years continuous service (PSU problem) The old proxy used Squid and with the exception of occasional problems caused by log files accumulating faster than the cron job to rotate them was very reliable. The academic network (270+ computers) is a Windows 2003 domain. Network mask 255.255.0.0. we use the 10.0.xxx.xxx IP range. Almost all the computers gain their addresses via DHCP. A group policy sets the proxy settings used by IE to connect via 10.0.0.1 using port 3128. The county supply us with a single outward facing static IP address 172.xxx.xxx.xxx, and the addresses of primary and secondary DNS servers. We have to use port 3128 to connect to their smoothwall proxy server c***.xxx.sch.uk. Physically the smoothwall server lies between the school network and the county WAN connected via a pair of NICs If as an administrator I manually enter c***.xxx.sch.uk. and port 3128 into the IE LAN settings I can connect to the internet. This must be going through the smoothwall proxy as there is no other physical path it can take. But no matter what settings I try in the smoothwall configuration I cannot get machines to connect via 10.0.0.1:3128. I would welcome any suggestions as how to proceed. Bob

Hi All I think the main problem here is with the CIF funding. To qualify for this 'they' were required to show that the project involved a collaboration between schools, and other training suppliers. The idea of standardising the front ends of the site probably stems from this. Personally, I would rather see the plain default that we worked with while the graphic designer toiled away mashing the pixels to create the masterpieces that now adorn the sites. I would guess that 'people' in the know might be rushing off as we speak to set up their own VLEs using Moodle somewhere free of CP interventions. Bob
