Yes, I have read that article and not found any other instances of a virus on the computer. The only other time I have had something similar was with a game exe file which was recognised as a virus. This was quickly updated with AV updates though. Wondered if anyone else had experienced it.

I have recently Installed Sibeluis 5 and am running F-secure on the client machines. When I try to run the software, I get a warning that the following virus is present - Win32.kme. I am guessing that this is a false positive as the disk is clean and when I delete the sibelius exe file (where the virus is found) and reinstall I get the same warning message. I was wondering if any of you have seen this problem in the past? Virus definitions are up to date, but thought maybe our version may need updating? Any ideas?

I have purchased things from SCC in the last few months and overall I've been impressed. I was given an account manager who I could contact almost every time I called. If they weren't there they called back as soon as they could - I dont think I've waited longer than a day for a respsonse. Delivery has been good too and I found the prices decent.

The post says "Experience desired of the following:" It is not essential that the applicant have this knowledge, but I would be suprised if someone had it all and was applying. Unless of course the pay was negotiable?

Make sure all network cards are set properly and not on auto neg. Reading your posts, I guess you already know that though. In relation to pictures though, we often find pupils are trying to manipulate pictures they have taken from their own personal camera or that departments have used the top setting. This gives huge image files, especially when it comes to making changes to them. I try and get everyone to compress their images so they can work a bit easier on them.

No solution to the problem, but depending on my mood I may ask them to go away and read the error message so I might be able to help them. This is happening more often these days.....Trying to force the end user to actually establish what the problem is before asking for help is a struggle sometimes.

I thought there was also something along the lines of age of machine? Then it changed to usefullness? IE if it could run SIMS etc? We are about 4:1, but have still got PCs that are 10 years old(about 1 suite) but staff refuse to bin them.

I was talking more about putting things from the pupils onto that area. They would have to go through me, as you know must pupils dont know (or dont care) about the licencing issue of music and video. After the initial "you cant put that on there as you cant prove you bought it"(for downloaded music etc)they will soon get the message not to bother coming to me without the proper documentation. As for staff, everything that they use in school now should be purchased through the school and come with licences if required. There should be a record for everything that is used in schools. Storing of music and video should be no different. Regarding whether my idea would work or not, time will tell. I have asked to meet with staff to discuss how we can implement a solution which upholds all the licences issues and does not generate a massive amount of work for someone. As yet, no one has contacted me, so no music/video files are allowed to be stored. Oh, and of course it helps if your in a smaller school too We have about 600 pupils here, so fairly small compared to some of you guys Any other ideas are most welcome, especially if someone has already got a system that works.

I think that glossing over the problem by stating that schools can use the fair dealing system is still a bit vague. But that is the reason I went to the LEA for guidance. I now have written documentation which states how we can use media for educational needs and how it can be stored on the network. Now if anyone queries this, I can point them in the direction of the LEA instead of the blame coming onto me. We have an AUP in place which clearly states that the network is only available for educational use and is not to be used for personal needs. This covers any files stored there, not just music and video. The storage area I was thinking about would be where all the legally bought music/video by the school could be stored. Any files brought in from home would not go onto the network as a licence could not be proven(you just know little jonny has downloaded it ilegally) In all honesty the respsonse that I got back from the legal department did little for my confidence in where the school stands in the legality of storing music and video. But I now have a reference point in case it is ever picked up as I do now want to be respsonsible for making the decision on storing such files as I do not have the expertise. I have always advised people to use their own CDs/DVDs on their personal players, that way it keeps me and the network out of it. I aggree with grumbledook, there should be some decent guidance for schools by now. The way that pupils are being educated has developed so fast with the aid and use of technology that the guidance is too far behind. There are too many laws open to interpretation that can cause problems - as we can see just from this thread. My advice, got legal advice from the LEA in writing stating how people can use your network for storing and playing of media files.

Yes, I have been told that too. 1 day grace period to sort your stuff out. Ask your personel dept if no one in the school can help. I cant say for certain as I've never needed to take advantage of it, but ask anyway, you've got nothing to loose

Here is an extract from a letter I recieved back "On this basis if the teachers/pupils are using musical video clips purely for the research of educational purposes then one would say that this is covered by the fair dealing system. On this basis one does not feel that licences would be required as this isn't going to be a performance just as a play which is going to be adapted and will need have the copyrights to do this providing everything stays within the educational field. " In my view, this basically gives users here the right to store and play music/video files for subjects which use them in an educational manner. If you are unsure and would like confirmation, contact your LEA as they may hold licences which cover all schools in your area. From this answer though, I now get the headache of sorting out which files are used for educational uses and which are personal. I am thinking of toying with the idea of having a shared resource area which stores music/video for the duration of a subjects use and deleted at the end. Any music files stored in individual user areas will be deemed non educational and deleted. Obviously this poses problems with the music department!

You will need the adm template for IE7 in order for the settings to work correctly.

You dont need to use normal.dot from another machine, you can just delete the file. If you dont want to delete it you could also just rename normal.dot to normal.old. If it doesn't exist, it will be created on the first launch of word. It can also cause problems in other office apps as they all have a link to normal.dot.

@Vegas - if you work in a school you do have part of the responsibility for affecting the career path of pupils. I dont have to teach(officially- but do train staff and pupils when tasks are more complex or new) But I do have to provide equipment to allow staff to teach. You may not think you directly have an influence on the pupils in school, but by doing my job I allow staff to carry out their teaching using ICT in all lessons, not just IT. As you have said, there are some good staff and there are some crap ones, that goes for teaching, IT support and that also includes senior management. I think the problem is that the senior management in schools has often come through a teaching background and do not always have the business like experience needed in schools now. Surely the rise of 2.45% is supposed to be in line with the cost of living? If teachers are overpaid (debateable - lets be honest, most of us think we should be paid more) then their actual salaries scales should be looked at and not the rise they will get this year.

Unfortunately it was a while ago and I cant remember how I solved it. I think I did follow the instructions and copied the files locally and installed it from there. It works now but I cant get my hands on the laptop which was used. Might not be much use sorry

You should be able to make any changes you need through GPO. The way I have it set up here is I have a group "NoInternet" and when the pupils are banned I move them to that group and when they log on the get a dummy proxy setup which removes all access to the internet. I believe lots of schools do it this way. You should be able to set the internet details to however you want. Changing them for staff and pupils based on the groups the users are in. If you use IE7 you will need to download the new adm template for it.

I think the thing is that althought the pay is scaled at 19k, you are only getting 15k. OK, fine this may be scaled right, but unless you have partner to make up your wages, you cant really do a lot with the holidays as you wont be earning enough. Still job sounds fairly interesting and I know of people who are earning this much but working full time in schools.

Check your job description. If you have a role in there that states you are respsonsible for the licences on all computers in the school, remove any software that is on there which is not legal. You can give them notice in order to back up any work, but unless you have something in writing which states you no longer have control over these machines it will still be you that is held responsible. The attitude of "other schools do it so we should be able to" is just plain stupid. If it is against the law, it is against the law....ignorance is not an excuse. If you are employed to look after the school network, then it is you who should be making the decisions regarding what is installed on computers. You should have records of all the licences the school has and know when you have hit that limit you either don’t install any more, or buy more licences. By the way, when you write to the Head & Governers, put a timescale on your request. It is easy for the school to let things drag on hoping it will just be accepted. But either you have something in writing which places the machines outside your responsibility, or they have the same restrictions in place as the rest of the networked PCs. As people have said, make sure you cover yourself with the appropriate paperwork.

Have you tried accessing it with a different account from home, or using your account at someone elses house? You may be able to identify if it is your account playing up, or your moodle site.

Inventory? It is something that is ongoing and can take them the entire time they are with you. They can just pick it up in betweeen other jobs they have finished. Online help/user guides? Edit: When I had one, I needed extra network cables....he made and tested about 50 for me

When I left Uni, both myself and friends had attended interviews for jobs where the company was looking for someone who had the experience to come in and do the job straight away. Whilst we may have been able to do the job with a little training, this was not something they were looking for. The only way that people coming from Uni are going to benefit are when companys are looking for graduates. And even then, if you have a degree and experience you are going to stand out from the crowd.

If your 15 going to college and then Uni means 5 years from now unless you have managed to get experience along the way you will be a grad with no experience and still find it difficult to get into a decent IT job. Yes a lot of jobs ask for a degree, but they ALWAYS ask for experience. If you are lucky you can land a tech job for your summers through Uni, but if like most people you need any job for the cash you cant always be so picky about where you work. My advice would be to aim to get to uni, but try getting into an IT job first. You can always train on the job and availability of getting qualifications outside of work is fairly widespread. You may need to do some voluntry work in order to get your first job, but even if you start work at 18, by the time you are 21 you could have 3 years experience andl IT qualifications which would make you more employable than an IT grad with no experience. If you struggle to get an IT job, then you can still carry on in education and go to Uni.
