Ok I was also looking at the L300 by nComputing their "promo" seems to show it streaming media fine but obviously this was their promo so could be biased Just looking into the feasibility of this to put together a recommendation to my manager. Generally how are people using these thin clients? 1 PC in a room with these clients attached to, central servers with x amount of PC's per server or VMWare hosted desktops?

Thanks guys you are right doh! At the top of the servers downloads is Server 2008R2 without mention of hyper v In our "licensed downloads" we also have the datacenter edition. I take it as you say our agreement doesnt cover that? 4 would be plenty just want to maximise the work of a new server we are getting. We will go vmware once we get the funding this is just a stop gap Thanks

What is the RRP on those units. The user must get the same experience as using a new spec I3 system. By this I mean the server we would use would be top of the range but the thin client must be up to display video etc without any "jerkiness" and the whole system must be responsive. It must also be compatible with server 2008 R2 Robbie

Hello, Would like to hear about your experiences with Thin Computing either with Multipoint Server or 2008/R2 specifically ethernet based clients. What clients are are you using? How many per server and what are your server specs? Do the end users get the similar level of performance than that of a new entry Core I3 system? How is reliability? Obviously if 1 pc in a lab fails or freezes if up it only effects one user but with potentially 30 people running from 1 it could effect them all? All feedback is welcome Robbie

Go for the Asus 1005PE they have over 9 hours battery life and you can pick them up for approx £230 at the minute. They run the N450 CPU, 1GB ram, 10.1" LCD and Wireless N

It's happening on a variety of PC's no one type of hardware. On one PC I've actually managed to catch doing it the event viewer was pointing to a corrupt profile on the PC. Now that may or may not be the same problem across the other PC's what could cause this. Any ideas? Anyone experienced the same? Robbie

You need to use your KMS key on your windows server To activate windows 7 I believe you need to be running windows server 2008 R2 Use slmgr.vbs to activate the kms key on the server This creates an entry in your domain dns under _tcp VLMCS I think its called which points your clients to the activation server. Only use the KMS key on 1 server It will need to "see" 25 unique clients before it will fully activate them

SCCM is definitely the way to go Put in on a 2008 R2 server and it will fly!! Have got it doing all our OS deployments and application installs. What is good is theres no real need to build images anymore(apart for our computing dept dont fancy rolling out MSDN & visual studio with it ) There is quite a high learning level involved so dont expect results straight away. http://www.windows-noob.com is a good resource to get you configured and up and running Robbie

If you log into your microsoft licensing portal and look at your downloads it will be there if your licensed for it. You normally get it with a campus agreement that has software assurance I think Robbie

Hello, I just need some advice on XP deployment with SCCM With a small reference image I don't have too much of an issue. With an image loaded up with our students "base" software(things like MSDN, Visual Studio 2008, VS6 etc) the image is 9.8GB compressed, (25GB uncompressed) and takes forever to deploy with SCCM. I am still deploying software on top of that to keep the image size to a minimum but I couldnt possibly deploy all the software needed via task sequence due to the sheer volume! The problem is the 9.8GB image takes 45 minutes to transfer, 20 minutes to unpack then 10-15 mins to apply and thats without the rest of the task sequence! If I did the same deployment via Ghostcast I could deploy the same base image within 20-25 minutes(it doesnt do the 3 stage deployment of the OS) Should this really take this long? Would I be better off ghosting the base image out and then using SCCM to install the remaining software via a task sequence?(this isnt going to be ideal either because a newly deployed system wouldn;t get picked up by sccm straight away). It also would make use of the driver database in sccm? None of this is a problem for our staff and light user machines using sccm. Our mini base reference image is perfect. It's mostly our library and computing areas that require massive amounts of software resorting in a bigger base image Any advice would be appreciated Robbie

Trading standards have gotten me to write this letter then they are going to take an active interest in it!

I am giving them 14 days to rectify the problem and then taking them to small claims. I know its only £32+vat but to me it's the principal of the thing. I don't mind if it ends up costing me more than that to do it! I won't be bullied by a company who think they can pull stunts like this and get away with it! Letter posted recorded today

I bought a computer motherboard from a local Bolton company scan.co.uk. This went faulty after a year(it had a 2-3 year warranty on it). I followed their returns procedure at the beginning of the year and they confirmed the item was faulty and would send it off to the manufacturer for repair/replacement. I then had to chase Scan.co.uk for weeks/months to try and find out what was happening every time I was told I would have to wait. Eventually I forgot about the item and Scan conveniently didn’t do anything to remind me. I phoned them up a month ago after being reminded and someone said they would look into it and get back to me which they didn’t. I then phoned Scan up again this week and someone apologised and said they would get back to me. I then received an email saying they couldn’t replace the item and offered me a refund of £5. Obviously I wasn’t happy with that as I paid £32 + vat for the item and it would cost me that again to replace the item. Scan have refused to budge and haven’t really provided me with a formal apology for making me wait so long. It sounds as though this company is going downhill very quickly and will lose more money from me by treating me like an idiot than they are gaining by trying to rip me off Robbie

I am trying this on a single core laptop Toshiba L10 and then imaging to a Lenovo N500(multicore). It gets stuck straight after the windows bootloader i.e. where safe mode is. No hdd activity or anything just a black screen At a bit of a loss on this one. Laptops drive is in IDE mode and not AHCI. Are the HAL's supposed to be copied to the disk somewhere? I put them in various other files in sysprep/i386 Any ideas? Robbie

Hello, We are new to VLANs and just have a basic question to clear up some issues with understanding a few points We have a 3com 5500G backbone consisting of 1 copper 48 port 5500G and 1 x Fibre 5500G linked together by XRN. The copper switch acts as a server switch and the fibre switch ports each has a 3Com 2948 switch attached to them. 2 fibre ports are inter site links running at 10mb and 100mb to different sites. What I want to do is VLAN off segments of the network possibly switch rooms at a time which could be a group of 4 x 2948. But also vlan off each inter site link. What I have been doing as a test is the following VLAN1 - Servers and Admin VLAN2 - Site 1 VLAN3 - Site 2 VLAN4 - Switch room 1 etc As the 5500G is a layer 4 switch it can handle the routing and has allowed me to create a vlan interface for each vlan which works well. What I have done is rather than go into the end point switches is set each fibre port on the 5500G to a VLAN(untagged) e.g. 1/0/1 VLAN2 1/0/2 VLAN3 etc Each VLAN correctly DHCP's to its own subnet(from a single DHCP). My first question is should it be possible that each VLAN can ping and access each other? (Because they do). I was expecting them not being able to without being specifically tagged with the others vlan id? My second question is if this is supposed to happen like this then is it reducing the broadcasts like VLANs should? vs a flat network Number 3 is if I havent done things right should we be going into the 2948's and setting the VLANs there rather than at the core?(We were being lazy because we didnt see it was necessary) Sorry for the essay hope I've explained myself Thanks Robbie

I could do it that way as a startup script and remove then reinstall but for two things msiexec /x halts half way through with a dll error The software would then have to be immediately reinstalled so I wouldnt be able to do a managed software installation Robbie

Actually it appears to be just the existence of a previous version causing the hang. I cant think of a way to uninstall other than modifying the MSI which ive already done without any luck. That only seems to work on a non silent install Robbie
