i'm fed up with kids coming to me with wps docs they did at home. Does any one know of a free utility to convert works files to word files?

Out of interest what is you main reason for finding an alternative to NetSupport School? Is it primarily cost or have you experienced some problems with the software? I'm not trying to sell you NSS just curious Rob NetSupport Ltd we bought originally 100 licences at £21.00 each + maintainance 6 months ago we bought 14 more licences + maintainance. We are now told that the maintaince is running out at the end of march. Original quote for renewal was just under £500. I wasn't aware about how much it was likly to cost every year. Certainly didn'nt know that we only bought 6months worth of support the last time. I have only called them a few times, one time they never called me back like they said they would. Ok they have agreed to do the maintainance for £350, its still alot of money to pay every year. I've had a look at the one mentioned in a previous post here called abtutor and it looks just as good as netsupport and is cheap.

so are you saying it could be a problem at ms end. bandwidth perhaps from the clip art servers. Shame MS can't sent the clip art on dvd so admins can stick them on central storage.

flash is freely available though. Obviously you coun'nt package office!

does any one know where you can download ready made Ai packages from. We want to push out flash player using ghost. Would be realy easy if someone has already made one and put it as a download.

we wont use vnc in this school. We used to use it on win 2k as a means of remote access to all pcs. Kids got hold of the password and had great fun shutting pcs downs. What we need is somethink like netop school.

theres no installer. is that a linux system?

we have a problem thats causing kids to loose work. When they try to insert clipart from the internet the pc locks up. They then cant do anythink except hard reset the pc. any ideas fellow techys???? Its publisher xp

does any one know of a reliable alternative to netsupport school. Software to control and monitor pc screens in a suite.

i see most people have there location attached to there posts. How do i add my location or school name?

i noticed in one pc that the event log was corrupt. I checked 2 others. they both had an entry to do ACPI AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0x71), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance. the other entry is Windows saved user BISHOPS\ils registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use. This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account. not sure what either of these mean. I went to see the taecher from the ict suite that had shutdowns. Turns out the kids do get a message. Windows is shutting down, please save your worketc" I've not seen it, but sounds like the message you get when using shutdown.exe

yestoday i had 2 calls saying that they had pcs restarting them selves. In one of the ict suites 4 or 5 pcs logged the user off without saving work and then restarted. No messages about updates were displayed. The 5 pcs that did restart are all in a line. They were'nt randon pcs in that room. This happened in our success maker suite as well. 10 pcs did the same thing. Each one went down in turn going round the room. Today the successmaker suite has done it again. I've checked sophos for viruses. I dont think its win updates from wsus. Any ideas guys. At the moment we've had to close the suite

what!!!?????

every 6 months i do a windows search on the students work areas finding all *.gif and *.jpg images. Is there a better way to sift though 30,000 images for porn. i have terrible RSI from the scrolling!!!

in 3rs its only happened once. It made such a loud bang, the kid was realy shken up by it. I dont think he'll do that again. Most of our pcs are dell USFF pcs so dont have that switch.

i feel sorry for the poor bloke that has to cut them benches out of work top. we just use straight work top like you use in a kitchin. The beching is arranged like an E in one suite and in the other the pcs go right around the edge of the room.

Toshiba are doing some great offers at the moment. we just bought 2 satellite pro 120 -160 laptops. £699.99 + £100 cash back Plus they have this thing where if the laptop fails within its warrenty they will repair the laptop for free and will refund the full cost of the laptop. We took out a 3yr warrenty for an extra £35. It still applies. So if the tosh fails in the 3yrs we'll get it repaired and the money to buy a brand new laptop. The 120- 160 is great laptop for the money. we bought ours from Misco offers

thanks webman, i been looking ages for that

we had a brand new dell laptop go missing. There were questions about whether one of the caretakers was up to no good, the were reports that he'd been seen filling up cans of heating oil for his own use from the main school tank. We have now put a combination lock on the door and the only staff to know the code are the 2 techys head of ict and the main caretaker. (who we trust) We still dont have a combination lock on the server room stangely! Its the same key that unlocks alot of class rooms and all staff have keys to the rooms they teach in.

I'm currently doing a little project at home, and would like to use the Microsoft win xp tune that use when you buy a new pc. Its the one that plays as you setup the laguages and internet connection etc. Does any one know where i can download it? Or where in the os is it stored.

We have had problems with kids gettings hold of a cmd promt and then doing net send. Is there a policy that will turn the service off on all work stations kids are logged into?

thanks guys for your help. I've just got it to work. I'm not using disallow all. To get the home shares drive Z; to work i had to add Z:\%username% disallow
