I've been in a few schools recently with Ergo Laptops. After a few years (3+), these seem to be working and parts are fairly easy to source via 3rd parties if the warranties have expired. Not really used the in warranty service so wont comment.

Don't you just love auto correct. Cheers for the fix.

We took part in the 3 MS 365 courses that were being offered by QA. I found them to be useful and the instructors were very knowledgable.

And I think that's the big problem for some of these schools. All the time that there management system is in place (in this case RM) they (and this probably means the SLT etc) feel "safe" that its the way to go. The prospect of change away from what they are use to sets Alarm bells ringing. CC3/4 might be all that the school or its neighbours have ever experienced, so they feel they need to have CC3/4 personnel on board, even if this means they have to stay tied into the CC contract. The limited experience I've had with CC3 environments is that they are fairly old OS's with fairly low numbers of IT personnel on site, who wouldn't have the time (and in some cases the knowledge) to native Windows Networks, so they migrated to CC4. SLT/SMT don't really have any idea of the complexities of the system, so they assume they MUST have a CC3/4 experienced network manager when they do their next recruitment drive because their existing NM has retired / quit/ broke down / died from exhaustion. But I suppose, if it was so easy to opt in and out of the CC networks, everyone would be doing it all the time.
-
No this gets me thinking..... If, for example, you use CCSomething in an environment for a while, but then decide not to renew your contract with RM, how screwy will your network/domain become if you try and remove the CC* controls? I'd imagine this might well cause big issues. I think I am going to have to find a friendly neibourhood IT manager to let me have a look at this RM stuff.

Mate, that's exactly what I thought but its amazing how many people seem to have used these products for so long that they are scared at the thought of having no on site knowledge about them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slow to learn, but it seems it gives you the edge if you have prior knowledge of such things. A foot in the door if you will.

Hi All. Just a quickie really, but has anyone integrated their MIS system into Office365 sharepoint using the available web parts for share point? Is this possible, or am way off track with this idea? If you have done this, which MIS did you use? Cheers _________ Fruity

For the past 15 years or so, I've managed to stay away from all things RM. No offence to those guys, but it wasn't ever anything I needed to get my head round so didn't bother. Now, whilst looking around for another placement recently, It would seem that knowledge of RM CC3/4 is almost a prerequisite of applying for jobs. It doesn't seem to matter if you've done without it, for years and are familiar with windows server environments... No CC experience = No job. Does anyone out there work in a RMCC environment, but not use the RMCC Tools? Is this even possible? I would of though it would be possible. If not, or even if so, can anyone recommend a cheap and effective way of learning the CC3/4 administration without having access to the toys. Many thanks _____________ Fruity PS: we did have a RM nimbus Network when I was at school.

Hi all. It’s been suggested that we look at moving across to a VDI system, replacing some, but not all of our aging classroom PC’s. What I would like to know is what have been your experiences of introducing a hybrid (VDI/Physical) system. Has anyone started and then abandoned the project? Has VDI been promised to be the miracle cure for all IT issues and then not lived up to its expectations, or has it been installed and people wondered how they ever done without it? I know it’s a bit of a marmite subject, but I’d be very grateful for you guys sharing your experiences and who knows, I might even make 25+ posts in the process. Cheers all __________ Fruity.

I'd start out with a single server and set up remote desktop services. The licencing for RDS has a 120 day (I think that’s still current) grace period, which is plenty of time for you to find the right number of users for the school in question. The other consideration is what applications you need to run for the remote system. Personally I'd stick with the basics to start with (office, Internal web services etc.). What’s the spec of the server your using? Is it Physical or virtual? All in all, once the server is up and running, getting RDS working for some users shouldn’t take that long. Getting the licencing balance right will take a lot longer. It could be the case that this is already covered in your LEA/School Agreement…. But then again it might not.

OK, so I've set up office 365 for users and its federated servers. SSO needs a bit of tweaking, but I'm sure I'll get that going. Email is working fine, but can I get my head around Share point? Nope! Its getting to the stage where i'm seriously considering jumping ship to Google. All I need at the moment is the ability to access and store documents online. I don't really need team sites(yet), and I'd like the default view for the moment to be a personal document storage library. Office Apps are available, but only word docs can be created in the team site. Are there any pre-configured templates that will let me do this? Failing that, any walkthroughs that will set me on the right path. Live@Edu ticked all the boxes. Perhaps there is a SP template to give the same features? Anyway, back to my Dummies guide....

Hello all. A couple of queries, if anyone can help i'd be most grateful. I'm rolling out student Email to Office 365 and have a query about DirSync and Federation services. The thing is each user in the school is on the domain organisation.org.uk. The staff have been using email using the naming convention [email protected] and are hosted internally, and to be honest I dont want to move these yet. The students were using email on Live@EDU with the address [email protected]. Each Student email account was originally created using a CSV file and were not AD syncronized so no SSO. As there were only a few test accounts created, I'm happy to recreate all these accounts. Now, as we move across to 365 I would really like to use SSO and Synchronize the Students using fed services and DirSync. However, I dont want to move the staff accounts. So Is it possible to Syncronize the Onsite domain (organisation.org.uk) With the 365 Email Domain (@Students.organisation.org.uk) and have the credentials for the onsite domain match the Students email Domain and allow SSO? Hope that makes some sort of sense.
