  1. I used to charge by the bottle - up to them whether its from the top or bottom (or spirits) shelf. The quality would of course effect the level of service next time! These days a £20 flat rate + parts would be pretty reasonable I reckon.
  2. My (not-so)Super Hub was dying every 48 hours or so. Virgin informed me it was a known issue which could be fixed by dropping the wireless to 150mpbs. That made the range even worse, so the back bedroom got about 1mpbs. Upped the speed back to 300 and played for a while with the channels Settled on one that gave me a decent signal to the back room (125mbps or thereabouts) and stuck with it. Been fine since. Still another disappointing netgear product though...
  3. Using GP Preferences myself - seems to work fine and dead easy to set up for printers shared from the server. Have both XP SP3 and Win 7 x64 clients. I apply the printers to users in a GPO on the OU for the room, so achieveing the same end as you. Edit - I set each printer up using "replace" instead of "update", which allows you to check the box to remove the item if the policy is removed. So far, so good for us.
  4. Have several of these hateful printers connected via USB to W7x64 clients. While the preferred solution involves parking a skip under the open window I was hoping that someone had managed to get one working without getting the following error printed on a page after every print: GET / DevMgmt/DiscoveryTree.xml HTTP/1.1 Host: 127.0.0.1:8080 Shared from a 2003 server they work okay, it just seems the 64bit drivers are non-existant, and the UPD doesn't work properly for it. Unfortunately, the ones causing the headache are non-network versions. Any thoughts, advice and pointers gratefully recieved.
  5. Could you let them have remote access to a terminal services host? There are licensing costs involved, but I ran something similar in a previous role. All the laptops were left off the network and they connected to the server on the LAN on site, and then over the internet when they were away. It meant managing mobile devices was way less of a headache too. If there's a problem you just use the manufacturers recovery tools and they're back up and running.
  6. Maybe for home if Mediacentre functionality is better integrated and touch optimisation translates to better control with a remote rather than keep having to grab a wireless keyboard and mouse. For the work network though, it doesn't matter what it looks like but rather how it works. As long as the functionality and managment mechanisms are the same, or any changes are actual improvements and well documented, then perhaps. What will it do on the average desktop machine or laptop that 7 can't? Agree with comments that this imagining looks like a linux gui, albeit a pretty one.
  7. Have you disabled asynchronous policy processing? This caused problems for me with drive mappings, though security policies were always applied successfully. What OS are the clients? Have you tried re-adding them to the domain or running gpupdate manually?
  8. I'll second: Stone - no-one can beat their pricing including 5 year warranties on good quality kit. Support has always been good so far and free imaging when you buy bulk... Advanced Connections - worked with Barry for several years now. Reliable and good standard of work, but because of that they get booked up quickly!
  9. Persoanlly I'd concentrate on getting DC2 reconnected rather than risk barfing DC1 as well. Have you tried the non authorative restore method on DC2 yet? If it cannot see DC1 have you checked the DNS on DC2 and manually added a record for DC1?
  10. +1 - Exactly what we're doing here with XP and 7
  11. 1) An ASUS Geforce GTX560Ti Direct CU TOP overclocked card 2) It's under the coffee table taunting me every evening. It may not survive packaged until xmas, which is just as well, as I'll be dusting off the old Crysis installation disc once its in my rig...
  12. Thought I'd post my own solution just in case anyone has a similar issue. In my case once I changed the Backup Exec service logon account to the domain admin details it started working. The service logon account needs not only to have full read/write access to the target shares on the NAS, but also to be an administrator on the backup exec media server (for Windows Server, at least). Once the service logon account met all those criteria the backup job started running seemlessly once more.
  13. +1 for AVG. Tried it this time after a factory reset. Had Creative Apps Antivirus Free before. Both do the same thing - check anything that gets installed. Both seem fairly unobtrusive. Would recommend either.
  14. HTC Desire S here - using the HTC Calendar (Agenda) and the Mail app for anything other than Gmail, and also: Google Docs Skydrive Browser Whats App the trainline ebay Amazon (shopping, not mp3) Amazon Kindle NatWest utorrent BBC News Engadget The Independant Night Clock TuneIn Radio Task Manager JuiceDefender ...to name but a few
  15. Or you could try a third party product like AdmitMac. Must admit (haha) I had some trouble with it, but others seem to have got on fine. Not cheap, but saves having to buy a Mac server.
  16. Thanks all. Seems to have helped a lot - users don't seem to get the problem where it fails to connect to their redirected My Docs. We are still seeing the failure to redirect Start Menu and Desktop occasionally. Logging off and on a second time works okay though.
  17. Hi, Wasn't sure of the best forum to post this in, as its a backup and storage issue, but involves network shares and permissions, so here goes... I have several shares on a QNAP NAS device which hold large amounts of data that I need to backup. We currently use BackupExec 12.5 as our D2D2T backup solution. I have read all the info on achieving this, and at one point it was working well. However, we recently moved the backup server (Windows Storage Server 2k3 R2) from the old domain (being decommissioned) onto our shiny new domain. Now, even if I use the domain administrator, which has been setup with full read/write access to all the shares on the QNAP, the backup job fails. Testing the resource credentials in job setup returns the expected failure to connect to a remote backup agent, but then success for each of the shares specified. When the job runs it fails and returns the following job log message: "The job failed with the following error: Authentication failed on connection to the server. Make sure that the user account has the appropriate permissions and that the password was typed correctly." It does. It is. All other jobs to other servers are working fine - these are on WS2k3/8 boxes with remote agents. This is the only job trying to backup user defined selections. Any suggestions or troublshooting tips gratefully recieved.
  18. 3s-gtech Top job - thanks for the quick reply - I'll try it on the worst affected suite and see how it goes. Were you able to find anything on M$'s site about it? My recent searches have turned up precious little of any use.
  19. Hi DaveyPitch, Just trawling the forums for info on my inconsistent profile loading (some PCs refuse to load correctly - some need 2 goes at it - majority are fine and its not a permissions or profile specific thing) and spotted the above. Could you post any more info re: the reg file, and if you're feeling really magnanamous, the line in the logon script Thanks
  20. OK. Have you gone into the Advanced security settings on the target folder and checked details of the permissions in there? Are permissions for Domain Admins inherrited or explicitly defined on that folder? Are any domain groups or accounts members of the local Administrators group on the server?
  21. So to confirm: 1) The user account being used is a member of domain admins. 2) The Domain Admins group has full NTFS permissions on the folder being shared 3) The Domain Admins group has full access on the share (e.g. "Everyone" has full control or group explicitly added and set) 4) The server in question and the user account are in the same domain in AD

    Novatech?

It was a close run thing between Novatech and Stone when we got a new suite of machines over the summer. In the end, Stones' 5 year onsite warranty swung it. I've used Stone before and can't complain, but a school up the road has hundreds of Novatech machines and they swear by them (which makes a nice change from swearing AT a computer, I guess...)
  23. Sounds interesting, although I share your opinion of the brand name - I'll take a look, Cheers
  24. Hi All, We're looking at a couple of new classroom AV setups and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Hitachi iJP-AW250NM projectors? We've got some quotes at a pretty good price compared to the Epson equivalent. Also need to know if there are any issues running Smartboard software with these interactive projectors - our staff seem pretty committed to the Smart tools and resources, so if they can't use them it could be an issue. Thanks in advance...
  25. Presumably you have some evidence or case studies that would give some foundation to that statement and provide some sort of entry point into the discussion. Arguably, its management's responsibility to lead a company and drive its business. It's up to management to assess the challenges facing the company and decide on the best strategy to maximise potential and minimise risk whilst addressing these challenges, which would involve deploying people and technology in a structure that best facilitates achieving the company's short and long term aspirations. So while the tech support guy may have been really helpful, or the girl on the checkout smiled and wished you a nice day, the board will take credit for any positive feedback and repeat business as it proves the success of the strategy and ethos of the company. Personally, I wouldn't have said Dell does have the advantage over their competition. But hey, I'm a techy - what do I know? Perhaps multi coloured clip-on notebook covers are the way to make a fortune...
