  1. How can we prevent students from installing software on PC's. Is there somewhere in the GPO that will alow us to restrict this. Thanks
  2. terquel the 2626 is a great piece of kit we have it 'I LOVE IT' infact we have a nice collection of hp procurve kit now, including a POE switch is such great kit you will spend hours looking into it beauty. when we got ours i sorted all the cabling just to show of are hp kit see below
  3. Hi i have 1 Hp 19" can remember the model at work which is great and looks the dogs and is very good for games, i have tryed farcry, UT2004, Doom3 and great results ( not that i play games at work, just if i can get a lunch break a little stress relief). I also own a very nice 17" samsung syncmaster 710n which i've had for over a year now and its great. So yeh go for HP or Samsung from ebuyer or dabs as they are great monitors Nuttygeek

  5. Hi can i recommend very highly hp procurve kit including there power over ethernet kit we have been running it for about a year now. Hp is basically cheap cisco kit from what i can see, there networking kit for wired is great as well check it out. We also use 3 com kit as its very easy to configure and was in place before i arrived. The other kit for a good price that i would recommend is linksys which i use myself at home and is great kit for a great price. For protection well i use WPA-PSK TKIP which does the job for me but just remember this 'no matter how secure you think something is the is always away around it all we/you can do it reduce the risk' this applys to anything not just wireless. 6. Ok, Firstly for the suggestions so far they will all be looked into i do like the Mac address idea, cheers to everyone though. You want more ok, it a boys school and girls school next door physically to each other with a joint 6th form and we have joined the 2 schools fibre together in a link in the joint music block ( a number of subject use the same facilities for both schools) this link was put in because the headteacher will never allow one school to control the entire ICT infastructure, so we are going to put in WINS instead which will get around that problem and give freedom to the students to log on anywhere. We can disconnect where its joined because we would lose are music and dt machines and they would lose there 6th form machines. They are 2 seperate networks joined at the fibre. With the problem of the reservation contacting the other server could we not tell that server if it gets that type of request to redirect it to our server? ( i dont know never done this before) In short: -Same physical site and joined fibre overall one network with 2 system running on it -2 domains to be joined by WINS ( no an issue at present) -Has anyone used RIS? -Willing to try anything Check out the picture that might help but is likely to confuse, also i failed art at school but then we never had computers in art like they do nowerdays. Thats all for now folks! Nuttygeek
  7. Hello, I have a Problem In that we have 2 school on one physical network, although we currently run seperate domains. The other school runs all of there clients on DHCP and we run all of ours on static ip so not a problem. The issue is we now want to setup RIS for server 2003 and need a DHCP scope. So yeh we setup one and it runs but the problem is there computers pickup are addresses and are computers get some of theres. The other issue is we want very soon in the future to setup a WINS database between the 2 schools. We have seperate Ip ranges but on the same network and how can we get our computers to get our addresses and theres to get theres. NB: - Cannot Physically seperate networks as both sides need other sides network infastructure to get to there computers. - Would a Router somewhere in the network solve the problem and how? - How is a dumb computer that want to be built from RIS going to know which Ip range it wants? Please Help Feel free to email me on [email protected] with anything no matter how small an idea. Thanks in advance Nuttygeek
  8. You might be interested to know that in schools terminal services is free to setup and run as we have it running here and when we spoke to microsoft then if your running server 2003 and its for education then its free the is a grey line around it to what your allowed to do with it but we have been running it with great success for about 5 months now and it has all the security of windows and is pretty easy to setup with a little reading on the microsoft server 2003 website. Terminal services will also do everthing you have put in you list as we also run SIMS and it works fine through the remote connection (2mb line) the only thing with it is if you have alot of people accessing the server remotely it will use up alot of resources so are sever is happy with 4GB of ram hope this is some help Nuttygeek
  9. Hi like john we use HP Proliants -ML350 G3 (have three of them) and (one of them) G4 which are great and are noisy but do the job perfectly would definatly recommend them. they are great because you can have the basic model for upgrade it to what spec you need, you can also have hardware raid controller in it if you want for software raid through windows personally recommend hardware raid Nutt
