  1. You're right about that - I've had quite a few staff laptops come back to me running painfully slowly, the user pleading ignorance, only to find that they've installed a plethora of god knows what! In the long run though, I think it solves more problems than it causes - in the "old days" we had staff bringing their printers in from home asking if we'd install it on their laptop for them because they didn't have the correct permissions...
  2. We set up a local accounts on the laptops, and ask the staff to use these when logging in at home. They have to remember to change the domain to the machine name before they log in, but most don't have a problem with this. We don't use roaming profiles, so its really the only way for us to do it.
  3. We've been running an OpenFiler box for about 8 months now, mainly as a backup for the stuff that won't fit onto tape any more. We've got it running on an HP DX2200 workstation with 2 x 1Tb mirrored drives. Its been absolutely brilliant, the only limit being the number of hard drives we can fit in the box! I've also just ordered a DroboPro and 8 x 1.5Tb HDDs - came to around £1500 - far cheaper than looking into new tape technology (as richardp mentions) and about the same cost as building a new Openfiler box. This should give us 9.36Tb usable capacity with single-disk redunancy or 8.17Tb with dual. I believe the Drobo's can also be chained together using "Smart Volumes" to give a maximum of 16 units, each with the potential of 16Tb capacity. I don't think I'd consider it as a replacement to an Enterprise-class storage device, but as a backup medium its looking very promising.
  4. It seems to be running fairly cool - left it on for about 5 mins just to be sure.
  5. I've got a very similar problem with a V3515 - aside from all the screws vanished, the machine hangs almost straight away, with the Fujitsu logo on the screen and the F2 and F12 options at the bottom (neither of which work). I also reseated the RAM and hard disk, but no joy. One thing I've noticed is that the fan seems to run at full belt whilst its frozen. Docboggle, did you ever get any further in solving your problem?
