2 quick things here... 1) would remote desktop not be better suited for XP machines than VNC ? For fixing this is. 2) If for spying and not fixing then I may still be able to remove the icon from the taskbar in vnc (this used to be hardcoded, but not sure if they have an option for this now) If anyone wants this, lemmi know.

The remote boot floppy doesn't support Broadcom cards at all m8, and the laptop's dont come with floppy drives ;-p Got them working now, once I know how I did it i'll post a fix on here as the above MS guide didn't work, nor did 10+ other guides. How do you mean u can't get rid of the other partitions ? Which partitions? The ones we have come with EISA partition, c: and d: I have reformatted the laptop and merged the c and d partitions and have left the EISA partition alone. If u need help lemmi know.

yep, ranger + it support of any kind = disaster. had it in 3 of my schools, got rid of it.

Guys do any of u have experience cloning either Acer 4601LCI laptops using RIS (as al I keep getting is a message saying that "THIS IMAGE DOES NOT INCLUDE THE NETWORK CARD DRIVES FOR THIS MACHINE, TRY ANOTHER IMAGE"). or a broadcom 57xx network card which I think is whats in these (although they do have WiFi built in too).

Can't seem to find anything else on this so I thought i'd post Does anyone know for definate what the licene side of things is like for this ? Can we use it in school? Is it free for educational use ? Any advice would be helpful please, thanks.

Yeah I have just been reading about that. Sounds like a good idea. Just one thing comes to mind, I am assuming that this app would be free, so would it be a GNU licence? Am just thinking ahead when ppl on here produce some of the best vsoftware in the world and words gets around and everyone wants it.

Yep, I always try to stay professional in any circumstance (although sometimes you do get pushed to the limits). Some good advice there m8, but I have changed jobs since then and have been wrking in new job for almost 2 years now. But thanks all the same :-)

Just to add my penny's worth - while at my 1st Techie's job I created a VB program to batch create users and add them to active directory, it also creates the users shares, shares them and sets NTFS permissions. It was originally created for my own personal use to speed things up on the windows 2000 network, but since shifting jobs I have addapted it for use on windows 2003 server (there r some slight differences as to how things r procesed). The only problem is that I originally designed it with only that school in mind and was going to develope it more at a later date and maybe make some money off it once it was ready, however I had a slight HD dying issue and unfortunatly my backup didn't work, so I lost the source code for it :-( O have since started writing a new version with full release in mind (so an interface overhaul and making it as simple as possible whilst keeping all the functionality). The one thing I need to do now is to learn how to do the windows scripting for the parts of my proggy that used to run from batch files. If anyone wants to have a look at it goto http://inox.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/inosoft (I was playing around with Macromedia Fireworks and Swish at the time too ;-p ) The program it's self isn't on there, but if anyone wants it and some basic instructions please let me know and i'll send it to them/upload it on here. It can be very quick once u know what your doing, but please bear in mind that it was never intended as it is now to be used outside of the school that I wrote it for some some file editing is needed (about 5 lines accross 3 files, nothing hard, just copy n paste). It will add approx 800 users in 2 to 3 mins with all shares + permissions. Lemmi know what u think. P.s. I am not going to be releasing this version to the general public, nor am I charging anything for it, although I have not yet decided what to do with a full version of it when it's finished. It will probably end up GNU anyways ;-p as I dont like ripping ppl off, but lets face it, in this world with the crappy pay, we have to gain all the income we can!

Hi guys, another newbie from the PC Pro article. though i'd write in while i'm @ work waiting for Ghost to build me a software package *snore* Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said.... been in education as IT support for almost 5 years now, have had and still am having similar experiences to all of you with regards to stupid teachers/crappy pay/naf working conditions etc. Teachers and Seniour staff can be a real pain sometimes (not ALL teachers, some r really nice ppl), had an experience once where all staff were invited by the head to the staff room for a lunch that he had put on (nice of him), there was a team of 3 of us at that point. We went down there n knocked on the staff room door as we could see someone standing up against it. One of the Seniour staff opened it and told us that we would have to wait till AFTER the "teachers" had finished before we could go in and go through what was left (which wasn't a lot). So we said stuff this and went down the road to Mc Donalds instead. Felt like kicking the door down n telling them exactly how I felt! Was so degrading. Needless to say that the teacher that said that was ALWAYS put to the bottom of the pile from then on! /end rant Must say these forums r genious. They have a wealth of information about various issues/hardware/software/working conditions etc that any IT techie would welcome. I get the feeling i'm gonna really settle in here. Anyways, been browsing since the PC Pro article and finally decided to say hi :-)
