  1. No school have the funding to do their own thing! It is the Department of Education for Northern Ireland who funds Capita for a managed network learning environment. In fairness until you've worked in a school in Northern Ireland you won't appreciate how good the setup is in relation to the environment and nature of the staff using it. Its far better than a technican creating their own ad-hoc system or having mulitple schools in NI use different suppliers when we are all basically doing the same thing. As i say it is a mixed bag but I have to say its an approach which fits NI and the system NI works in.
  2. Hello I set up a Facebook account using my school register email account which is a managed email address. No personal details on the Facebook profile was added to this account regarding myself, just a blank profile with the necessary information required to set up. I was then able to create various Facebook business pages for the school and I downloaded the Facebook Pages app for iOS on my iPad and it is a great way to manage content via a number of Facebook pages I have created for school use.
  3. I have just been asked to look into the possibility of our school setting up a Facebook page? I am just pondering the risks and benefits to our school setting up a Facebook page? It would be good to get the views of this community with regards to such? Should a school set up and administrate their own Facebook page for publicity and better communication with the local community, parents, pupil past and present? If your school has experience with this platform, what are the advantages and disadvantages, have you had any parent complain about the school having one. What safeguards have you in place on Facebook to limit any negative interaction? Or any bad experience with it in general. What type of content would you publish on it, do you use official school photos, videos? Are you legally allowed to do this? I don’t wish to know the name of any school that has went down this route. I am fact finding with regards what the school experience has been? Positive Negative or otherwise, did it have an impact? How many subscribers on average has your school achieved? Etc I personally would embrace this but I am a little paranoid about administrating one for the school especially when I can’t get access to the platform in the first instance, as it is blocked.
  4. Mainly for Journalism students to type up newsletters produce podcasts, Music students to create short music files, Moving Image Arts pupils to produce short movie animation clips, the total amount of pupils going to be using the classroom will be no greater than 80 users, so I guess if they use the macs appropraitely there shouldnt be any bother although I am ready to be surprised. We hadnt any real major trouble last year when they were all stand alone, its this creating accounts for the students that I am really wanting to see if anyone else has tried it out in their institutions?
  5. Hi Folks We are thinking of setting up a classroom network with 25 iMacs using the Mac Mini with Snow leopard. We hope then to give pupils their own unique accounts so that they can save there work in their private areas, TBH my knowledge of Apple set-ups are pretty limited tho I am willing and have to be willing to learn how to set this all up, so I am just wondering has any other schools or organisations tried the Mac Mini as a classroom server? and what would be the other benefits ? Thanks
