The "stuck in the queue" problem is usually because of firewall rules and the required ports not being open. Check with your ISP that the following ports are open: Port TCP 443 (https) Port TCP 1640 (SCEP) Port TCP 5223 (APNS) Port TCP 2195 (APNS) Port TCP 2196 (APNS) Hope this helps.

Command line used to work following this: Lion Recovery HD Through A Proxy - Mactasia But now it no longer seems to. Apple documentation does also state that it doesn't support recovery through a proxy: OS X: About OS X Recovery I phoned them, and they also told me the same. Quite surprising really.

You can redirect the Library folder (amongst others) to store on the local machine, and not on the user home directory. I've written more about how to do this on my website: Folder Redirections (MCX Redirector) - Mactasia

Now that Firebind are charging for use, does anyone have an alternative site to recommend?

Hi, you can do this via WorkGroup Manager. If you login on one of your client computers, open up WGM. Connect the drive you want for all users using the Go > Connect to Server method. In WGM browse to the computer group/user group you want to manage, select Preferences, select Login, select Items. Set to manage Always, and drag your mapped drive over from the desktop in to the WGM window. Here you can also select other options such as Authenticating with the user's login details etc. Hope this helps.

Got the mac but what next? AV/Office suite and virtual box
mezmerrick replied to nicholab's topic in Mac
Because i've never had any problems with my system, files swapped between my Mac OS and Windows OS (with A/V installed) and files I've sent to other people, either by email or other means. As far as I'm aware, Mac OS X now has built in Malware protection which automatically updates. With regards to other "nasties" running on Mac OS X, I understand that because it is built on Unix, you are required to enter your password for something to access your system. Frankly, I'm not naive enough to do that. So unless something drastically changes, I never plan on installing any. Nothing wrong with that. Plenty of recommendations here for the OP to choose from if they wish. Each to their own. -
Got the mac but what next? AV/Office suite and virtual box
mezmerrick replied to nicholab's topic in Mac
I've used a Mac daily for over 10 years and have never needed anti-virus. Office is OK. But I personally prefer the iWork suite of apps (Numbers, Keynote & Pages). For a VM I use Fusion. Solid and reliable. -
Had similar issues with new MacBooks. Reboot the Mac with it all plugged in and the projector on. Seems to work for us as a work around at the moment. But if 10.8.2 fixes it, then it's all good.

The Firebind site said that some of the ports I requested are actually closed. I will check again with the SWGfL, but also with my LEA to check our local firewall isn't blocking them.

Hi John, Yes, it is I! Small world huh?! We've come a long way since those first Macs we had in our music dept - it seems so long ago! Now we have a huge influx of iPads! To the point where I need to get a good management solution in place sooner rather than later. I will check out the Firebind website tomorrow at work and see if I can find anything unusual! Thanks, Ross. Will check this out.

Hi Everyone. I'm having some trouble with my MDM setup. I have a 10.7.4 Server with Profile Manager configured. When I try to enrol a client Mac, I install the Trust Certificate followed by the Management Certificate. I can see in the Console applepushservice(304) errors - failing to reach https://albert.apple.com I have repeatedly contacted my ISP (SWGfL) and had the following ports opened from our IP ranges to our MDM server and Apple's services, but i'm still getting failures. TCP port 2195 (APNS) TCP port 2196 (APNS) TCP port 5223 (APNS) TCP port 1630 (SCEP) TCP port 443 (HTTPS) Anything i've missed? Any ideas much appreciated!

OK, it seems that allowing permission to the hidden /private/ directory allows the simulator to run the App

Thanks for the advice. I'll see what I can find out from Activity Monitor.

Hi Everyone. I've run in to a bit of a brick wall on this one, and was hoping for some help. Hopefully someone has already achieved this. I have a 10.6.8 Server, and 10.6.8 clients. Our IT dept is now delivering Xcode, and from within WGM i have allowed both Xcode, and the iPhone Simulator. The problem is that when they click build and run, the Simulator opens but they get a permissions error when their Application tries to run! I have tried getting them to put in to a folder called "Xcode" in their home dirs, and allowing permission for any Apps in that folder to run - no joy, same error. I have tried a shared area - no joy, same error. Has anyone got this working? I'm thinking it must need permission to somewhere else to run the App in a simulator, but where? Thanks for any advice.

FileWave Lightning - New imaging tool for Lion and Mountain Lion

Thanks for the heads up. Looks pretty damn cool! -
Yes, as part of the push and enrolment process I believe it contacts an apple server. At least, I had problems initially with my LEA and contacting albert.apple.com

Carbon Copy Cloner v3.5 released. No longer donationware.
mezmerrick replied to Arthur's topic in Mac
I was surprised by this when the update popped up - but I can also understand it. I use it on all my Apple servers as it is a very reliable back up solution. I'll probably pay for the latest version too. -
No, i'm not using Apple Configurator at all at the moment due to there being no VPP in the UK. My setup is basically a Mac Mini Server running Lion - Only Web services and Profile Manager are enabled. DNS is handle by the Windows FRDC. Make sure you have forward and reverse lookups in DNS to your server. The mistake I first made was trying to configure the Apple server with an internal DNS as well as an external address. From what I can gather, Profile Manager will only run on one or the other. So I setup my server to entirely run on an address accessible from the web. I also had to get a lot of ports opened by the Schools ISP. I can give you the ports if needed, but it sounds like yours works externally, whereas my problems were the other way around.
-
Oh... really? I heard that the VPP wasn't working so great in the US, so they we're thinking of finding another way to license Apps. I've also been told by an Apple rep that they are turning a blind eye to schools installing multiple copies of one App because of the lack of Volume purchasing available in the UK (and elsewhere). Up to you/your school whether you take that risk though - that's why we decide to gift the rest of the licenses. I hope VPP does come to the UK - it would make imaging with Apple Configurator a breeze!

That's what I'm saying. I use the WGM Details tab to add extra .Plists - but for some reason the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist doesn't reliably apply :s

Apple Seeds Golden Master of OS X Mountain Lion to Developers
mezmerrick replied to Carter's topic in Mac
In Server.app there is supposed to be an Enable Webmail option according to the Apple documentation: http://help.apple.com/advancedserveradmin/mac/10.8/#apdB5FD8371-43F8-4F40-89FC-EDA5B997D4BC I don't have that option, and other's have also mentioned this. -
Thanks. But shouldn't WGM take care of this reliably for users logging in with AD credentials?
-
Personally I never got this preference to work reliably. For example, in my Plist I removed all of the Network browsing options. But it only applies reliably on the 2nd login for some reason?! Anybody else ever had any issues with it?

Apple Seeds Golden Master of OS X Mountain Lion to Developers
mezmerrick replied to Carter's topic in Mac
Does anyone know what's happened to WebMail in the GM release of Mountain Lion Server? It used to be Roundcube, but I can't find it anywhere?!
