[ltsb, 1607] HP 620 laptop and Windows 10 = no sound.
TheElusiveOrangeButton replied to Koldov's topic in Windows 10
I imagine you've sorted this by now, but we had this exact issue with a bunch of HP 450 G4s, and the fix for us was to update the BIOS. -
We're currently installing about 90 new Ruckus APs in our school and so far we've installed about 50% of them. As it's the summer break, there are very few people in, mainly just us IT guys with a laptop or two and our phones. We've noticed that when we're using a device that's connected to the new wireless network, the connection will occasionally drop out for a couple of seconds, and it will then reconnect, and it can happen to one device while others remain connected. We established that it seems to be that a device will leave the 5GHz band in order to reconnect to the 2.4GHz band, or vice versa, or even drop its connection to an AP it is sitting underneath in order to connect to an AP in the next room (or two floors down in one case). Has anyone any idea what's causing this, and/or how to prevent it? We've only just started with this new system and already it's driving us a bit bonkers, and if we're feeling like this now the teachers will really let us have it upon their return!

Anything better than IMPERO?
TheElusiveOrangeButton replied to clm's topic in Network and Classroom Management
I'd just like to throw my name in the hat and say that Impero is a complete shambles for us as well. Used to be a fantastic piece of software but over the past few years both the product and level of support we received has gradually gone down the toilet and I will certainly be looking to move away from it once our contract expires next year. To see Mic "proudly" state that most of his support cases are resolved on the first call makes my blood boil, quite frankly. -
Hi guys I have one user (and only one user) who is getting the above message whenever she attempts to log on to a PC. The logon then fails and she's stuck at the login screen. On one PC, I deleted her local profile and she was then able to log in, but only with a temporary profile. I've done some furious Googling, but most of the solutions I've found online deal with roaming profiles, and we don't use them. There's nothing accidentally in her profile field on AD either. Short of deleting her as a user and creating her anew, I'm not sure what to do, and even if I did that I'm not sure it would work (would a machine join her to the local profile that already exists, or create a new one in the form user.DOMAIN?) We're using Windows 7 and Server 2008, if that helps. Help :s

Try using LikewiseOpen - I had the same issue as you for the longest time and it fixed everything for us in a heartbeat. Just make sure you're not bound to your Domain and that AD is not ticked in Directory Utility when you install it.

I don't suppose the Macs also dual-boot with Windows? That can cause problems with timekeeping in OS X.

Hi all Fog's printer adding function has worked for us before, but our latest image is giving us a bit of grief. Fog adds the correct printer for the group the imaged PC is a member of. However, the printer will not print. The reason for this appears to be that the port isn't being created correctly by Fog. If we look at the printer ports available on the imaged PC, the printer port we want doesn't exist in the list. If we try to add the port manually it won't let us, and tells us the port already exists. I've found that if we manually create a port before the printer is added by Fog, it will work, but this isn't ideal. I'm using Fog 0.29 and the image is of Windows 7. Any advice greatly appreciated!

What kind of number should I be aiming for here? Obviously as close to 0 as possible, but as I said, I have no real frame of reference here as regards what is a lot and what is acceptable as far as retransmitted packets go. For example, I just logged into my PC and I have the following: Active Opens: 169 Passive Opens: 0 Failed Connection Attempts: 8 Reset Connections: 15 Current Connections: 5 Segments Received: 3264 Segments Sent: 2384 Segments Retransmitted: 12 Thanks again for the help!

A lot of kids would have to be unplugging a lot of network leads for that to be the case, so I doubt it's that, even with our lot! I had suspected bandwidth issues to be honest, because we use SynchronEyes a lot here, which does a lot of broadcasting, but I'm unsure how to check available bandwidth. I've used Wireshark, but all that does is tell me what's currently going on, and I don't really have any frame of reference to say "yes, that's a lot" or "no, that's normal". Is there anything out there that will just say "holy cow, you have no spare bandwidth!"

We have a bit of an issue here in that some of our Win7 clients aren't mapping drives correctly, which is done through a logon script, and also don't seem to be applying group policies. This means that students have unfettered access to the machine, but also can't get online because the proxy details aren't being entered. Some are working fine, and all machines have been imaged with Fog, so they're identical to one another. Also there seems to be no rhyme or reason to this, some sometimes work, and then sometimes don't. We enabled the 'wait for network to be ready at logon' setting in group policy in the hopes it would fix it, but it doesn't seem to have had much effect. Help!

[fog] FTP connection to Storage Server has failed!
TheElusiveOrangeButton replied to Batman's topic in O/S Deployment
I had this same problem earlier today. I reset the DefaultMember node password under the Storage Nodes > All Storage Nodes Menu. Worked fine for me after that, hope it helps you too. Good luck! -
I've put Fog 0.29 on an Ubuntu 10.04 box - everything seems to have gone well, although I had to swap the Kernel out with another one from the Sourceforge d/l page before my Samsung NB30s would image properly...

Issue found - IP conflict. d'oh! All seems to be going swimmingly now, even with the ancient hardware!

Help! I've installed Fog on Ubuntu 9.10 on probably a 5-year old laptop, initially just for testing, but now we have 150 netbooks to set up, it's going to be used until at least next week, when hopefully Fog 0.29 will be released, and I can stick it on a slightly more powerful Ubuntu 10.04 box. Anyway, everything seems to work fine - Fog will image one PC at a time with no issues at all (and really fast!), but when trying to network boot from a second client, I get the following error: PXE=E32 TFTP Open Timeout Filesize=0 Bufsize=537600 TFTP... It will then just sit there until you put it out of its misery and reboot. When the first client has finished imaging, the second will then go without a hitch. Any ideas? Part of me hopes it's just the sorry state of the Fog server I'm using, and that come Fog 0.29 everything will just work swimmingly, but if anyone's got any ideas they'd be very much appreciated. Also, I'm kind of a Linux newbie, so go slowly

Would that move files that were already there though? I would have assumed it would just point you somewhere else when trying to connect to your home drive?

Hi guys I've got a weird issue that seems to be spreading throughout our school. At first I put it down to thick kids messing around but it's become so prevalent, and affects decent kids, so it almost certainly can't be that. Anyway, the problem is that with some kids in ICT lessons (or at least they're the only ones reporting it to us), any folders and their contents within My Documents get moved to My Pictures. Any files in the root of My Docs appear to vanish. Clearly we need to get this sorted but it's such a bizarre issue that we aren't really sure where to start. I'm a fairly small cog in a large machine so although I'm pretty experienced with servers, I haven't really had much to do with the one in question. However I'll try and find out answers to any questions you might ask. Any help greatly appreciated.

Netbook XP & Office licensing issue
TheElusiveOrangeButton replied to TheElusiveOrangeButton's topic in Windows
Excellent, that could be just what I'm looking for actually. Am I right in thinking Vista Buisiness grants you downgrade rights for XP Pro? If it does, how do I get the XP Pro key? Now I'm thinking we can give them the machines with Office installed but no key, so we give them each a license and they can put it in themselves. However XP is still an issue - if I installed XP with our Volume License key, but provided them with their own XP licenses, would that be OK, legally? -
Netbook XP & Office licensing issue
TheElusiveOrangeButton replied to TheElusiveOrangeButton's topic in Windows
Yes. I'll say no more. We're eventually planning on rolling this out to the entire school of 2,500 pupils. (Where's the crying icon?) When the lease period ends, the machines will be at least 2, and at most 3 years old, which, given that they're netbooks in the first place, won't be ideal for passing on to the next batch of pupils. We're also hoping that because the machines will effectively belong to the students, they'll be looked after a bit better than if they're ours, and especially if they're 3 years old and have been treated in the manner which the young 'uns normally treat things. It also gets them a bit excited for the whole thing, which helps, and it allows us to create a 'pot' if you like, whereby the contributions of the first batch of users will pay for the machines we use in the second year, so we're not having to outlay cash every year to fund 400 odd notebooks (except for the first year, of course). At any rate, there's nothing I can do to change that part of things, so there's not much to be gained from discussing it tbh. -
Netbook XP & Office licensing issue
TheElusiveOrangeButton replied to TheElusiveOrangeButton's topic in Windows
I did think of that, but we need to maintain compatibility with what the rest of the school runs, which is Office 2007. They'll need to be switching between their machines and the school's machines, so everything will need to be exactly the same. Even if I did try to suggest it, people far above me in the pecking order will decide that before the words even leave my mouth. Thanks anyway, though. -
Hi All I have something of a dilemma that I hope someone out there can help me with. Come September, we're hoping to dish out around 300 netbooks (Samsung NC-10s and HP Mininiotes) to our Sixth Form students. The plan is to either allow them to buy the machines outright, or lease them over a period of two years (or one year for year 13), and let them keep the machines after they leave. Now, here's the problem. The NC-10s ship with a license for XP Home, so when they leave us, of course XP Pro and Office will no longer be covered by our license, and if we ask the students to bring their machines to us to downgrade before they leave, I don't imagine we'll get the response we might wish for. What I'd like to do is provide them with a seperate license for XP, which they can take with them when they leave. Would that mean we'd have to enter a new product key for each machine that we set up, or will it be covered because they have a license? Not a major problem either way, but I'd like to know before I do it, since we'll image the machines using WDS. The biggest issue really is Office. I'm scratching my head about this one because it won't be that much of an issue to provide them with Office Home & Student, but while they're here some will need Access or Publisher. I've had visions of setting up a Terminal Server which could run apps while they're here, and when they leave we disable their account, but it's not really as seamless an approach as I'd like, plus I'd need to think about TS CALs. Basically, whatever we decide needs to be as cheap as possible so that the sixth formers will be able to cover the costs. I'm also assuming we would not be able to provide OEM licenses, which means we'd have to spend quite a chunk on software alone, which would push the total cost higher than we'd like. So I throw it open to you guys. Any answers, suggestions, experience, or ways around this will be greatly appreciated.
