It is all to do with a system we have been forced to create. The idea is... these users are "exam" accounts. When a user logs in, they can use the My docs as a temporary work area for the duration of their session. When they log off a script copies all of the files in that folder to a secure storage area and then deletes them from that "exam user"..... This works perfectly, however the my pictures/my music can not be deleted by a normal log off script.... so are causing us some issues... Its not just a case of ignoring them... if a student has put work in there we need to take that into consideration as well... Hence, being able to remove these two folders perminantly would be the ideal solution...

When a new user logs into the system for the first time, as their roaming profile is generated a "My pictures" and "my Music" folder is created and plonked into their home directory (my documents). Is there any way to prevent the generation of these two files when the users profile is created? I have tried un-registereing the mydocs.dll on the workstations, but this does not seem to work. I have also added the two files to the exclusions list in gpo and Ranger, to no avail. Anyone know how to stop these pesky files being created?

You are right in that you do sometimes want to be able to open and read the file rather than save it.. But WHY does microsoft let you save changes to that temp file back to the temp directory... thats just silly.. I agree, its an education thing, but thats easier said than done! People dont listen...

We have quite an annoying issue occuring at the moment. When a user opens a file (e.g. word/excel) from an internet browser (IE7- WinXP). They are asked if they want to save, or open the file. Naturally the user clicks "open". The document opens, they do some work on it and then click "save". The file appears to save OK, so they close it... what they dont realise is that they just saved their changes to the temporary internet files folder. There is no way of recovering the file they saved. All that work is now lost. How can I prevent users from clicking "open" files fia GPO, OR... Prevent them from being able to SAVE back to the temp instance of their word document? I am sure windows SHOULD ask you where you want to save the file if you click on "save" if the file is in temp, but it doesnt appear to... This is causing the students an enormous amount of grief when downloading files from the VLE etc... Help much appreciated.

The box is a Dell server and comes with a UPS. I believe we have 3tb. Yes its a linux OS running an apache web server... you have NO access to the OS atall.... Frog have remote access to that side of things so you should never ever have to go into the OS... It works seemlesly with a windows domain... I think any concerns you have about this side of things are worth ignoring!! What did you think of skillspace? We had a demo version of it and thought it was shockingly awful!

Yes, its a big spend for year 1.... but the following years are LESS and it compares favourably cost wise to other products if you do a cost comparison for say a 10 year period....

Im not sure I understand your question.. But in essence, the frogserver has 3 network interface cards... one for the "admin" network, one for the "student" network, and one for the "internet" network... so you can connect across all of it... Only limiatation is support for only one active direcotry... you can still link to files on other "domains" so accessing your MIS database on the admin network, and your student resources on the student network is not an issue!

RM/kaleidos obviously just pick prices out of thin air... The data storage charges they were asking us to pay were a joke.... cant remeber the exact figure but it was something around 50p per Mb/year ..... Which is a joke, especially considering how long it took to download the files back to the school.... As someone mentioned before, the cheapest is not always the best, and I dont for a moment want to suggest that frog is perfect, mereley it met our requirements and so far (appart from a few minor issues) has met or exceeded our expectations.... RM failed to even meet our basic expectations! As for the student files... It DOES link to their network "home directory" Kids can save work in lessons to their "my documents" on the network as they always have done, and then go home and open them up via frog to continue working on them... The only time the kids would need to upload a document actually on to the frog server is if they either want to hand the work in to a teacher, or share it with their peers. The fact that frog has active directory integration means that the kids only need to remeber one password.... which we all will know is not something to be sneered at!

I would agree that SCORM on frog is hit and miss. Having said that, the other three VLEs we tried also had rubbish SCORM viewers.. so its not a unique problem to frogtrade! SCORM= nice idea that simply doesnt work!

Its worth considering that the first year is expensive because you have to outright buy the product.... We calculated that RMs Kaleidos and FROG would cost us the same over a 4-5 year period... and after that (assuming frog prices stay the same) we will be paying less than for Kaleidos.. No, frog is not a perfect product and has many bugs/flaws etc... BUT.. and here is the cruical point... It took us over a year to begin to integrate kaleidos into the school because it is so utterly rubbish.... In a few weeks we had frog to the same position.... and now several months down the line its become part of the school system, kids and staff want to use it and amazingly, even the less computer savvy staff can get on and build pages or at the very least add content.. The features frog are developing will only add to a fantastic product which is endlessly customisable.... No product is perfect but I know we are more than happy with frog at the moment! (assuming they continue to develop the software and fix the issues we have highlighted)...[worth noting that their technical guys are fantastic...very busy as the company is expanding too fast for them to keep up with, but fantastic none the less!]

We use Serco CMIS (facility) with frog.. And have no issues atall.... Users, timetables, teaching groups, yeargroup data etc... all seemlessly transmitted to frog Its a daily process at the moment, but we are expecting a live link soon to go with the forthcoming parent portal

Hi Localzuk. Client- Windows XP SP3 Browser- IE7 The web application is running on a Unix server under Apache. Active directory is on a Win 2K3 server. I was hoping to be able to do it client side somehow perhaps using the "login.bat" file, as I have minimal access to the web application back end.

I have, what I believe to be a simple(ish) problem. With possibly a very complicated solution... I have a web application that requires the user to log in. It authenticates against active directory to log the user on. So the user logs into the workstation and then has to log in again onto the web page using the same username and password. Is there any way of having it so that when the user logs in to the workstation it automatically picks up their A.D. Username and Password and completes a logon on the web application to initiate an authenticated session, so that when they click on the web icon, they are passed straight though into the application instead of having to stop at the password screen and re-enter their credentials? I know its not the end of the world entering the details twice, but for some users who dont really want to use the program, this is becomming a boundary which I need to remove! If anyone could suggest a solution, or reading materials that explain how the loggin details are handled when the user logs into windows, I would be greatful.

We are trying to migrate from one VLE to another ... the old VLE will only let us extract our resources in SCORM format. This is a ZIP file containing (amongst other things), the files/folders we want, stored in a rather confusing maner.. along with an XML Manifset file for the ZIP folder. Does anyone know of a scrpit that can be run on a SCORM package to query the XML manifest file and recompile the files/folders in a normal "windows" layout? (I.e, return the content back to how it was before it was stuck into a SCORM package.) I can supply a ZIP SCORM package if anyone is willing to have a look?

I am in the process of reviewing the general user Acceptable Use Policies as well as the internet AUP. Without wanting to overload the documentation (which most dont read anyway)... Has anyone written a specific AUP for their VLE? My personal opinion is that a set of "rules" set in stone in the AUP would make it a lot easier for staff and students to work out what and what is not acceptable within this "new(ish)" technology. Would be interested to hear what others have come up with:ear: As an asside... and indeed to complicate things we are wanting to push that the students are responsible for their own VLE through VLE wardens/prefects and self moderation etc. Which deffinately needs a set of organic rules!

We have not got quite as far as you, but I like the idea of implementing BB3.... a LOT of the students/staff will be familiar with it... How much linking between bb3 and frog have you managed to achieve in terms of users etc?
