Option to Hide user from global address list in MS Exchange
Andie replied to Andie's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Thanks. At least you have confirmed to me that I don't have that tab! I need to get onto the suppliers of our exchange setup. -
I've had a look at a few of the threads about removing usernames from the global address list in Exchange, and some of them mention an option that you can tick to hide the user from the global address list. However, I've had a look at the properties tabs for our users, and I can't find anything like that particular option. Can someone tell me where to find it, please? Is it specific to a particular version?

You should be getting some kind of alert message to tell you why it is ejecting. When this happened to me on a repeated basis, it turned out that the backup had been running (look at the times and the byte count) but then the tape was ejected because it had been filled up and the alert was asking for an overspill tape in order to complete the job. Quantum drive too. Look at your byte count and see if you may be getting full.

Teacher has just come to say her laptop is flashing up anti-virus warning messages. Get there to find a web page pretending to show that there are no end of trojans on all her disks, and a message box asking if we want to remove them. Trying to click cancel on this box just brings up a box asking to install Personal Anti-virus. No matter what i did with this box it kept trying to install program. Closed web page in end which then let me close all other windows. But too late - it looks like it had installed itself anyway. Teacher had just been browsing the Internet when all of a sudden all webpages disappeared and this antivirus stuff came up. Not the sort of teacher to do anything silly. We already have sophos on the laptop. There is now a desktop shortcut to something called Personal Antivirus, but the program is not listed when I go to the Add/Remove Programs list in Control Panel. The program is also now on the Start menu, and had an uninstall option in its Start menu folder, but that does nothing. There is also a button in the system tray on the taskbar. This is screaming messages about a critical file infection. I have just set sophos to scan the computer. If that doesn't find anything, does anyone know how to get rid of this????

Interesting article in issue 38 of Leadership Focus, a magazine from NAHT, about Learning Platforms from a primary school head's perspective. There are two parts to the article, one part by the head of a primary school who seems quite disillusioned with learning platforms after being initially "delighted" by the concept, and then a reply from Dr Stephen Lucey of Becta. I've attached a pdf of the article.Learning Platforms Article NAHT Issue 38.pdf

Mandatory for both here. I've just told them that's the way it is with a network! All fat clients, and very few icons on desktop. Must be a primary school thing?

LNM 2005 + Server 2003 SP3 + Boot from LAN
Andie replied to Andie's topic in Learning Network Manager
OK, I have been looking into this further myself. Firstly, I should have put SP2 for the server. We installed SP3 on the clients and I'd had a long day. Secondly, we are XP clients (no Vista) so we are using WDS in Legacy mode, which looks like it is the equivalent of RIS. Thirdly, our images were ghosted through the procedure that is installed with LNM - a series of Client Installation Wizard screens. Through this, we could send and take images using ghost client, without seeming to refer to ghost server. Basically, it looks like installing SP2 on the server has broken the links to the Client Installation Wizard screen that I was using. The previous CIW screen order was Welcome, Tools, Logon, then a screen titled Main Menu. I have found the first three as .osc files in the old RemoteInstall folder. Not sure where the Main Menu screen is coming from though. Or how to restore the CIW screens so that they work again, or that's even possible??? -
I am having same sort of problem with multicasting - even dumping an image from a client seems to be causing problems. I will look at what difference unicasting makes, and at the IGMP settings. But what puzzles me is that we were previously using ghost32.exe with Learning Network Manager, and I could boot from LAN and send an image to 6 clients at same time without needing to run ghostcast server and without any problems on the network. Same hardware but using ghostcast server and now there are problems.

Teachers want to access the Poetry Archive (well, the Children's Poetry Archive part of it really) Children's Poetry Archive but it uses RealPlayer. And I did have a go at getting RealPlayer up and running, but no success. RealPlayer has been out of action for ages, and I was kind of hoping it would go away, but... We have Real Alternative installed in the IT Suite but that has never connected successfully either and I have no idea how to configure it... Anyone using Poetry Archive successfully and can give me some pointers?

We are in the process of putting together an AUP which will include a set of rules for acceptable use of ICT which the pupils will have explained to them, and the intention is to send these home with a letter for parents/carers. There is a bullet point section on email. We are proposing to ban them for using any email except their school account whilst in school, and we also have points that ask them to agree to be polite and kind and not put personal details in emails (address, mobile phone numbers, etc.) for safety. I did a search for Acceptable Use policies on here and generally on the web, and there is a sample on our Learning Platform, and then we just pulled together what we thought was appropriate. It needs to be worded simply for young children, but the plan is to have the teachers go through it with the children prior to sending it home.

Abacus Evolve Interactive Planner (Ginn/Harcourt Education)
Andie replied to witch's topic in Educational Software
I've fixed my problem using Resolution 1 from the Interactive Planner Installation Guide page 26. Full details have been posted to new thread here: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/educational-software/36293-fix-abacus-evolve-planner-error-running-standalone-after-installing-xp-sp3.html#post338650 -
I installed Abacus Evolve I-Planner on XP SP2 machines as standalones some time ago. Then a few weeks ago I installed XP SP3. This week I discovered that Abacus Evolve planner has stopped working, with the following error: I-Planner failed to connect to the Evolve Datastore. Please contact support, the application will now exit. This error appears on page 26 of the Interactive Planner Installation Guide that came with the software. The guide says that the problem is caused by settings to the SQL server or a reinstall of the planner software. I tried Resolution 2 on page 27 first, which involves stopping and starting the SQL Server for the software. Didn't fix the problem. So tried Resolution 1, even though I hadn't reinstalled the planner software. This worked. Steps as follows: 1. Insert the I-Planner software CD into the client machine (any year will do) holding down SHIFT key to prevent autorun. (If the CD does autorun just cancel it). 2. Double click My Computer. 3. Right click the CD drive and choose Explore. 4. Double click the ClientInstall folder 5. Double click the StandAloneReinstall.bat file Takes under a minute to run. To do this on all machines without putting the CD into each one, I have copied the whole CD to a mapped drive (UNC paths not supported so don't try and run the batch file by double clicking to it's copied location on the share). Then open the XP Start Menu, choose Run, and type the following into the Run box (replacing italics with your drive letter and folder name on the share): drive letter:\foldername\ClientInstall\StandAloneReinstall.bat Hope this helps someone who, like me, was a bit slow in updating XP!!

I uninstalled SP3 and just did a bit of testing, logging in as admin and other users - no scripting error now and printer available. Then I reinstalled SP3. Again, logged in as admin and other users - no scripting error and printer now available. This will be one of those little IT mysteries as to why the first install caused this problem, but it's fixed so I'm happy. Thanks! P.S. Uh, oh. Just found another client with same problem!! Why don't users report these things???!!! Now I'm going to have to check them all.

Abacus Evolve Interactive Planner (Ginn/Harcourt Education)
Andie replied to witch's topic in Educational Software
I've got a problem with this lovely software now that I've installed SP3 to the XP machines. These are also standalone installs. Different error message: I-Planner failed to connect to the Evolve Datastore. That one is in the installation guide that came with the CDs but the resolutions don't match the scenario. However, the event logs on the machines are throwing up SQL errors. About to work through possible resolutions. Will post back if I get anywhere! -
I think I'll give it a go tomorrow, thanks . Will let you know if it fixes it.

Wonderful news, and all the best to you as you launch out full time. Just shows what a brilliant idea the forum was in the first place. Be proud!

OK, here are the scripts. I didn't think I needed to post these as they have been working fine for months, and they still are working fine on the rest of the (identical) clients in the IT Suite. Both of these scripts are throwing up the same error message on just this one machine (so far anyway!). These are not new scripts, and the offending line (in the IT Printing section, and ending in ColLaser) is repeated elsewhere for other machines in other locations and doesn't throw any errors either. Also I have now noticed that although the error comes up when logged in as domain admin, the printer is still available - not so for other users. The only recent change to the machines is an update to XP SP3.logon.vbs stafflogon.vbs

Thanks for the help with getting at the solution on experts exchange (useful tip!). The suggestion that looked likeliest suggests possible connection issues, and adds to the printer script by getting the connection to try 10 times witha 2 second pause. However, my problem is only on the one machine and is not intermittent. And the printer seems to connect despite the error when logged on as administrator...

I've been using a couple of logon scripts for ages without problem. Now one client is throwing up a Windows Script Host error code 8007007B, for all users including admin. The script connects shares and printers to the clients, and I haven't changed anything in the scripts recently. Moreover, the script works fine on other machines in the Suite. Only one printer is affected, and is not connected as a result. The only fairly recent change is that the clients have been updated to SP3 (XP Prof) and the server updated to SP2, but other updated clients are unaffected. I did google the error code, but the only mentions of similar problems were in experts exchange, which I need to pay for to access the actual solution! Server is Windows 2003. I've attached a screenshot of the error message, but it's lying!!! Script Error ColourLaser.pdf

Primary School ICT Technician to Primary School ICT Teacher
Andie replied to SteveR's topic in General Chat
There are primaries that have specialist teaching staff - mainly for music, IT and PE. But it seems to be done mainly on a school-decision basis rather than LEA wide. I was in the same position as you are a couple of years ago. I was then offered HLTA with a view to teaching ICT. However, I chose to turn it down and instead asked if I could lose the TA bit of my job and concentrate on the techie bit. I had already seen the work needed just to do the HLTA, and how that person was now planning and delivering lessons and used as a supply teacher without any of the financial status of a fully fledged teacher - working unpaid lunch hours, etc. I don't have the urge to teach, though I do worry about what some teachers are teaching in ICT. I am only part time, and being offered the HLTA helped me to decide which bit of the job I really felt was for me: techie or teach. But be careful about going down the HLTA route. Do you have other HLTAs in the school, so you can see how they are treated and ask about pay? -
Help needed from anyone who continued using Learning Network Manager 2005 with Server 2003 SP3, please. I've had a look at other threads, and can see that LNM 2005 isn't designed to work with SP3 and that WDS has replaced RIS. But can also see some folk look like they have this sort of setup working - they just haven't posted how unless I've missed it. I used to boot from LAN on a client (PXE?), login as admin and work through screen prompts to either create or restore a ghost image, without needing ghost console (as in the LNM installation guide). LNM 2005 worked with ghost32.exe and it all went very well and I could image a cluster of clients without crashing the network. Now having installed SP3 there are problems. We've installed PXE server (I say we, but I largely mean my very helpful technical backup from the local secondary school), and WDS, and we can now boot from LAN. But the screen prompts from there are different and we are having problems linking the WDS bit (I think) with the LNM bit and getting the location of the images right. My technical backup doesn't know LNM. So we may just have to abandon it and work out another way to do images. But if anyone out there has got any useful pointers (and can make sense of what i've put here so far!) I would be very grateful.

Backup Exec Restore: Can't find single files!!
Andie replied to Andie's topic in How do you do....it?
Nothing is ever too simple for me!! And yes, that was it and file is now restored. Thank you! -
The LEA (who for the record are not Cambridgeshire) were responsible for training two key administrators over two days who were then responsible for rolling it out to their schools, with additional training a month later for subject leaders. Part of the training was given over to planning roll out in your own school. The following is just my opinion, and not an official opinion of the school: the LEA training was not good; I felt that the LEA trainers hadn't been well trained in Kaleidos themselves nor had they had enough time to look at it properly for themselves. I have no idea how these individuals were trained. That was version 1. Unfortunately, we then went over to version 2 which rendered a lot of our initial training obsolete. The training for that involved a couple of hours for two people from each school going to a room with no hands on facilities whilst a chap from RM went through what we needed to know. Subject leader training did not seem to go well either from the feedback that was recieved here. This was again LEA led. There have been other factors affecting the LEA rollout that couldn't be gone into here. Our school did develop a plan to roll out the platform. Unfortunately, at each stage we have hit technical problems which have meant logging a support call with RM. For example, the teacher who was trying to roll out to his class was unable to load resources - the machine just froze. My other bugbear is that we did hit a few issues with the way usernames are generated, which were traced back to issues with Integris that had been solved by LEA workarounds. So I tried to get RM to look realistically at these. Now call me niave, but as RM own both Integris and Kaleidos I thought this would be simple. But no. Apparently RM hadn't trained their Integris staff on Kaleidos or their Kaleidos staff on Integris. Now, as the two work closely together, in that the data from Integris is extracted into Kaleidos, and it matters how you enter that data and what fields are extracted, I would have thought it would be quite important by version 2 stage to have thought about this! In part the LEA roll out has been a factor in our lack of enthusiasm for Kaleidos. But as an individual who has tried to use it and has been pushing away to get things sorted for over 18 months now, it is not the only factor. I prefer not to go into greater detail in public. We haven't given up entirely. There are possible other ways to do this. We start paying in a year and it will be awful, in my opinion, to be spending money on something that we don't use.

Backup Exec Restore: Can't find single files!!
Andie replied to Andie's topic in How do you do....it?
Thanks, but now I'm really worried as I don't have a previous versions tab in Properties... Domino: can you expand on what DFS stands for please? I've no idea otherwise... :o EDIT: Dynamic File System?? If so, I am still none the wiser. -
I want to restore a single file with Backup Exec (Symantec). Never done it before (yes, I should have done!). Backup was set up by IT providers and seemed to be running fine. Problem is that I can't browse to single files. All of the folder structure is there, but I can't drill down to files within those folders. I have tried looking at the Help files, and these seem to say I should be able to do this. I have tried catalogging the media containing the last full system backup. Still can't drill down beyond folders. Help please!
