Not something that should be aimes at Sivadam. His assumption is correct. Reason 0 is the easiest error to solve any support team should deal with this in very little time. I have given the OP a list of things to try. If I had remote access It would be workking by now.

Thanks. I should have qualified that with, I don't do games. It is to hook it up to the TV

Wait for the avalanche of posts starting 'I believe.....' EDIT: I had a PM from the OP and I will help him through the problem.

Some Wally, cough Me cough, bought a nice Grphic adapter with HDMI. Did I check if I had a PCI E slot? No. only PCI Do I: Send it back. Get an adapter. get a new motherboard. What is the best and cheapish route to go down?

Printers causing Reason 0?? Since when?

TomTom uses the same set of satellites worldwide. I used mine in S Africa with no problems, other than balancing it on the dash as i had forgotten my sucker.

Perhaps a SIMS error message thread should started, as most of the above is of no use to the OP. Check connect, ini, SQL Engine, shared drive. 3 simple checks, if it's none of those dig a bit deeper, it really is very simple 99.9% of cases and takes no more than 2 minutes as opposed to 48hrs discussing how the error would be better worded. I'm off, I have offered the OP help off-thread.

My finger missed the target of 0. The list is to demonstrate that most of the reasons, if not all, are down to the installer/network manager/technician not the program. If installed correctly you rarely get reason 0. I'm still waiting for someone to tell me how the client can report a better error when it cannot access the main program, or would that ruin the SIMS knocking session. I'm not a SIMS fanboy either, I currently have a complaint about helpdesk information received.
-
Where does it say that? What was the upgrade? Was this a migration? Was the upgrade completed? Was the connect.ini checked? Was the helpdesk informed? Why has it been happening for so long? Who did the upgrade. Is the fault intermitant? Finally why come to a forum to ask about such a simple error message when the helpdesk/support team could have sorted this out in their sleep? Still up in the air as far as I am concerned. there are procedures, let's follow them. I am fully sympathic with obscure messages and Capita's failure to give us meaningful error messages but reason 0, after an upgrade? Call the Helpdesk or whoever upgraded (it's their job), don't blame SIMS. Sorry if that is too blunt but don't put up with a system that doesn't work properly when the answer is on the end of the phone.

Aldi are doing a battery hammer drill, I got one Sunday. If your drill comes out of the wall red, it's brick and can be difficult to drill into. If it is block (most likely with plasterboard) then most drills will drill into that. Have you thought about hidden shelving. Basically a frame on the wall with a bit of mdf top and bottom, great for recesses. Don't go overboard with the screw depth but don't rely on plasterboard to support a shelf.

Technically in SIMS there is nothing to do. If the Pastoral structure etc. is set up, it is ready to go and all classes and years will appear on the first day of term. Timetables will be correct. The only thing is as I said which is admitting new pupils, which is not your job. I have never heard of a begining of year procedure in 8 years plus, before .Net you had to click on the year to change it to the current one but now it is automatic.

2nd page after the little c in a circle is well worth a read.

Perhaps reading the whole of my posts would make more sense i.e. If the client cannot access the server/database how???? can it tell you why it can't? The thread is referencing Reason 0. This has a list of reason which are accessible via Supportnet or local support. Anyone who has been working on either for more than a week will be fully up to date with this error. As I have listed, there are 9 possible reasons, all bar one are due to incorrect setup of a worstation. It is nothing to do with printing, and if you have migrated to should have read where it says 'edit the connect & sims.inis.
-
To be flippant, if they have done the EoYear then just login at the begining of the year. The only thing to be done would be to admit new pupils as they arrive (if that is what you do, wait until they turn up I mean) Edit: You don't think it is one of those Newbie wind ups. Like a skirting ladder. Go back and tell then you have to wipe the SQL clean.

I give up, I'm glad you are not at the end of my phone. Cannot connect = cannot connect. Simple. I'm sorry i cannot put it in any other language for you. Reason 0 = cannot connect. I never claimed it said why but I did say how could it say wahy as it was unable to connect to find out why. Round and round we go, where we stop no one knows. I love reason 0 it takes 2 minutes to solve. I'll now bang my head on the desk as some people are just argueing for the sake of it. The thread is about Reason 0. The thread has been answered.
-
Your point? The thread is about reason 0, which has 9 possible fixes ALL which stop the client connecting, so no I'm not. 1, 2 and 3 are for a different thread with different solutions. Diverting to other errors are no help to the OP whatsoever.
-
There are 9 possible fixes for Reason 0. These are due to: 1. Incorrect setup of SQL 2. Incorrect connection file 3. Unfinished upgrade (indicated) 4. Incorrect setup of SQL 5. Insufficient disk space 6. Firewall 7. SQL not running 8. TCP/IP problems 9. SQL connection.
-
There are 9 possible fixes for Reason 9. These are due to: 1. Incorrect setup of SQL 2. Incorrect connection file 3. Unfinished upgrade (indicated) 4. Incorrect setup of SQL 5. Insufficient disk space 6. Firewall 7. SQL not running 8. TCP/IP problems 9. SQL connection.
-
Sorry but you are wrong. Reason 0 means it cannot connect.
-
Potato tomato Edit: The actual words are: SIMS Connection failed for Login USERNAME reason 0. The first 3 words are a big clue.

We have migrated over 100 schools in the last couple of weeks, 30+ to go. Changing the connect.ini and sims.ini are documented and pretty obviously necessary to make the thing work. A basic knowledge of the setup is necessary, as you say. If a PC has an IP of 127.0.0.1, does any expect it then to tell them why it is not connecting to the network, Capita's equivilant is reason 0 and equally as simple to fix.
-
On pretty much every occassion Reason 0 means it cannot access the database, so how can it then provide anything more meaningful? Have the correct paths, access rights and make sure the SQL is running (pretty crucial this :-) ) and you won't get the error. If you get it on a regular basis, you're doing something very wrong.
-
More often than not Reason 0 is an incorrect mapping in your Connect.ini Hardly the fault of SIMS.
