  1. The littlees on one campus call me alternately Mr Valentines, Mr Valemtimes and Mr Valentimes Day (no prizes for guessing my surname). They also tend to run up and give my knees hugs for fixing their computers. Mr %surname% or Sir for the older kids - though they're also cute since they've taken to sneakily calling me tata when I'm not looking. Proud to share a nickname with Nelson Mandela *d'aaaw*
  2. We're hosting it so it's called Soccer Nice to hear Steve - have you ever travelled here before? PE is quite close to us (around 3 hours) - we maaay make it up for a game there depending on how much support I can drum up from the locals.
  3. Given our fairly slow internet and that we're around 6000 miles away from the closest clouds it's certainly not something we're looking at now. Once we start making proper strides in internet access for schools here it should be quite interesting. I've been playing with the idea of using two spare servers to make my own private cloud to mess around with. Eucalyptus is starting to look quite attractive really.
  4. So, it's nearly upon us. Speaking as someone from the host country, we're very excited Are there any Edugeeks who will be flying in to watch a game or two in our lovely country?
  5. I've been trawling around, looking for advice on setting up a Media Server for our school(s). So far it looks like Windows Media Services is about the easiest to get going. One of the issues with it though is the lack of support for various formats (flv, rm etc). Is there anything else that works well? I've looked at TrilbyTV and ClickView and it pretty much looks like they're restricted to the UK. I've seen this thread and noted some of the suggestions. I've also toyed with the idea of using MythBuntu as an option.
  6. Aha! So it can be done in sunny SA Glad to see another SAffer here Nick We're leaning more and more towards the Google Apps way - I've been asked to put down a proposal for this and our school website. A message is on the way to you Nick. By the way, overseas counterparts, what's an/a LEA?
  7. LEA? Although again - South Africa
  8. ^^^ South Africa Our ISPs don't seem to get this whole "internet" thing Though, with the landing of two new undersea cables it's getting pretty awesome
  9. Some excellent ideas - thanks folks, you're helping me get my head around it. An issue with running one 4mb and keeping the 512 for mail is that the two campuses are only linked using wireless at the moment. Once we buy the intervening land we can lay fibre etc but for now the wireless link is all we have. It runs quite well but I'd have to do some speedtests to see what browsing is like from the other end. I have a hunch it might suck. @EduTech: Problem is, I can't seem to get a static IP for love or money. Nobody seems to offer what I figure shouldn't be too terribly hard.
  10. Hmm - that's not a bad idea. My only issue there is that I'm a little antsy to lose control of my mail server. Damnit, my options are being limited again - no ISP will give me a static IP as an addon. The only way they'll do it is if I pay a massive premium. Cursed monopoly on the internets!
  11. I have something of a conundrum. And it's got to do with cost and static IPs. I currently have two campuses that I have to manage. One has a 512k Uncapped connection shared between about 40 people and two labs and the other has a 384k capped (3GB transfer allowed per month) line shared between about 30 people and one lab. With the 512k uncapped account I get 5 static IP addresses of which I use two - one for my mail server breakout and one for my proxy server breakout. As things stand, the internet is (as you'd imagine) helluva slow when people are using it. I can upgrade both sites to a 4Mb uncapped connection for the same price as what I'm paying now. BUT I lose the static IPs. Now, I have a dedicated server that I could host our mail server on and I could easily run the proxy (squid) through a normal 4Mb connection. What would your advice be? Do I: a) Host my own mail server and stick with 512k b) Host an internal mail server, forward it to my Dedicated server and move to 4Mb c) Try to find some ISP that provides a static IP and mix both solutions tl/dr: Choose A, B or C.
  12. Is there any way (please say there is) to bulk import clients into italc from a text file? There's an export function - surely there should be an import? Or am I just blind?
  13. Spiceworks is really excellent - I had an issue once where it froze on scan at around 2% and just sat there forever but that's since been fixed. AD Integrated, talks to exchange, does pretty much everything.
  14. Man it's hard to navigate here with elinks I've solved almost all the problems - end is in sight. The process has started to get rid of the horrible multihomed at last - I even managed (after wheedling) to get budget for some extra hardware. Machines can now auth against the server but I'm still having an issue with DNS *sigh* Basically, the DNS server still shows itself as unresolvable (can't ping the GUID which fails the connectivity test in dcdiag) and in a host of Netlogon errors under System I get: And then the usual load of Microsoft stuff telling me to run dcdiag followed by nltest. Right at the bottom under additional data I get an interesting bit that makes me think about winsock: Any ideas? The Internets is mum on this for the most part.
  15. Pfft, I still have discs I'm so not downloading several GB over my 512k line if I want a product again
  16. Does it just print nothing where the wordart should be or does it print something else? Sorry and to confirm, you did this:
  17. We don't alas have backup tapes here But when I worked in a plastics factory we just used to pile them in a box and let a machine pour about 40kg of molten purge over them. Made a nice little messy ball. Stuff was hard as a rock once it cooled too.
  18. Indeedy. The poor bastard thing is also a very lightweight mail server. The way it's setup: public domain is forwarded to DC's public IP (on port 80) for webmail public domain is forwarded to DC's public IP (on mail ports) for incoming/outgoing mail I've read up a little on multihomed DCs and I can see they don't appear to be a very good idea - but currently there's no budget for something else so I guess we live with it. I'm still slightly puzzled as to why this happened now when the secondary died (unless as was posted earlier, it was doing most of the work). There's an email waiting for the boss to say we need some new hardware but I would love to get this sucker up and running so I can slap a secondary in there and take this one down permanently later/relegate it to only mail.
  19. Ooh that's cool. You guys think you have problems? I'll post a snip of one of our essays one day. Should make your brains melt.
  20. Yeah there are two NICs in this machine - both are configured to use the same DNS (192.168.0.1) and the external NIC is configured to not register with DNS.
  21. This server (192.168.0.1 / zion) is operations master. I've managed to get all the FSMO roles transferred and it now shows that it knows all five and they are linked to it. From DcDiag: The FQDN resolves and is pingable and if I do an nslookup of the GUID I get the correct response. In addition, the record exists in ._msdcs Hmm... edit: Oh, and an ipconfig /all for the server:
  22. I'm starting to wonder that myself... it's odd that this only started happening with the second DC failing. I've never had to do very much on this server so it's never been an issue. The DNS settings are now correct on the DC though buggered if I know where they went. OK, most of the errors on netdiag are gone as are the ones on DC diag. Still stuck with some that are causing issues though. All I want is this DC up and running so I can get a secondary going again. Good monday From DcDiag: And from Netdiag Thanks for the assist folks
  23. Hi, Something has gone horribly, horribly wrong with our DC I inherited this sucker and it's worked fine till now. I don't currently have a backup DC because that bit the dust last week as well. Joy. Among other errors, DCdiag throws up a bunch as does Netdiag (both attached). I cannot join objects to the domai (Domain controller could not be contacted) and windows error 10042 seems to keep coming up in event viewer and so on. Unfortunately there's not a lot of information on 10042 that I can see. Any info would be really, truly, greatly appreciated. Seriously. Like cookies appreciated at this point. Help me Edugeek. You're my only hope. dcdiag.txt netdiag.txt
  24. I <3 my Wii Fit Just make sure that you don't get the standalone wii fit game that comes without the board Also, try for Wii Fit Plus - more features and pretty much the same price IIRC
  25. Since I don't drink coffee, that's out... so for now it must be my KVM switch. Lovely.
