I guess you're keeping true to the "just say no". Dear teachers, You've had the best part of a decade to learn something new, so I'm afraid I've got no sympathy. It's your own fault that your pre-prepared resources contain screengrabs from this antiquated software you are still using. The children can pick-up and use something else in minutes, if only you weren't actively failing them in showing them how to clip videos and string them together in a sequence. I always give a deadline: "This software will cease to function from X date" - and then make sure it is removed/disabled by that time and the alternative is in place.

As a simple introduction to video editing for primary age (or ability) children, it might still be quite useful, albeit there are better options. However, if teachers are not in a position to revise their plans for the term by learning a new product, as a realist, I'd say it might be a good stop-gap until they can switch to a new solution (the summer holidays perhaps). Changing some registry settings to make the software easier to manage is just a handy tip and can be automated as part of a deployment. Just wondered what people's current experience is with RMM solutions? I've been using Datto RMM since it was Centrastage and a small British Company, but pricing seems a little inflated now and everything seems a bit of a struggle since the Kaseya Acquisition. I figured now was the time to look elsewhere. Has anyone used NinjaRMM or ManageEngine and can report positives or negatives? Failing that, what are you currently using as a general RMM for monitoring, software deployment and remote control and how are you finding it?

We tried the JL686A. That's the one that sounded like a vacuum cleaner. It was accepted for a return as "faulty". My assumption is that the fans were spinning up fully when they didn't need to However, having heard them spin up fully, I didn't want to subject anyone to that on a hot day. Thanks for the tip on the JL685A. With in-line injectors, that might be a good option. The cabling contractor option is a possibility. I just need to find that "decent local cabling contractor". "Decent" tends to translate to really rather expensive.

I think two 24 port switches is an option. I've pretty much ruled out PoE as can see that it's never going to be quiet. Swapping the cabinet in the location it's in would be a tricky task that I'm not sure me or our site team have the appetite for. Can anyone recommend particularly quiet non-PoE 48 port switches (or 24s)? First hand experience is more valuable than datasheets alone.

So, our ideal requirements are a 48-port switch, ideally with PoE. The drawback is that the designers of our second site decided to place the main comms cabinet in the front office, right next to the admin assistant. If I had worked there at the time, I would have beaten them with sticks until they changed their mind, but it's too late now.... I have tried an Aruba, but it wasn't just a bit noisy, it was something akin to having a small vacuum cleaner next to your ear all day. I'm thinking I'll have to rule out the PoE and use in-line injectors for the APs (sadly!), but does anyone have any recommendations for a quiet, but very solid 48-port Gigabit switch? I'm hoping someone else has found themselves in the same predicament and already arrived at a solution. TLDR: Can anyone recommend a reliable 48-port gigabit switch that makes as little noise as possible (ideally with PoE)? Thanks!

That makes sense, thanks for the input. It sounds like they will all happily interoperate as "portals". Using a mesh wouldn't make sense at all, so that's reassuring to know.

I'm looking at Aruba Instant On as a solution for networking a soon-to-be newly refurbished site. I've got to admit, I'm struggling with determining the optimal setup when it comes to the "mesh point" and "mesh portal" roles. We'll be Cat 5e cabling to every point regardless, in order to use PoE. What I'm not clear on is whether setting every point as a "mesh portal" is viable and allows for the points to be centrally controlled. It would apparently make little sense to allow wireless comms between access points as "mesh points" when there's a 1Gbps wired connection available. What are other people doing with deploying Instant On WAPs? If I've completely misunderstood, feel free to correct me also :-)

Thanks DGardiner, I've got a few names, but getting nowhere, alas. Not sure what the issue is. It might be that they sent out that e-mail offering the service free to schools for three months and they've got too much than they can realistically handle. Either that or they just don't like me for some reason

I've just got back into working for a school after an absence of many years. It's good to see this site is still going strong. I have a batch of laptops waiting to go out to student's homes and I'm looking for an effective way of filtering web access. Initially I was looking at Smoothwall cloud filter. I don't know if they are especially busy, but things aren't progressing, 12 days after my initial query. I just wondered what other people were using? Ideally I need something that actually filters (rather than just reports) and can be up and running by the end of the week. Any suggestions?
