Here's something else weird. If I click on the 'command prompt' icon from the start menu and run as domain admin, I get:- C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe The directory name is invalid. But if I run the command prompt with my normal account, it works fine. I've checked the ntfs permissions, and domain admins (as members of local admins) have full access to cmd.exe. Similar thing happens if I RUNAS the event viewer. Works with normal acct but not the domain admin. The only things it does work for are the server 2003 admin pack tools.

@pooley I don't get prompted, presumably because my account already has read access to the share. Explorer just opens the window without a prompt, as it should, but I don't have write access.

More info. If I try to create a shortcut to access it, the 'run with different credentials' option is greyed out, so I can't set it.

For a long time I've had the bad habit of working as domain admin (yes I know...) Now I've adopted best practise and am using a normal user account and runas when needed. The only thing I haven't worked out is how to use runas to open a shared folder on a server. I've tried runas /user:domain\administrator //server/share but it doesn't work. Any suggestions? I've read that it's possible to create a shortcut with other credentials, but that leaves the shortcut behind afterwards.

If anyone's reading this: The problem doesn't appear with IE, only Firefox. It's something to do with Firefox not authenticating automatically with the IIS.

Wes, Sorry for taking a while to get back. I've had a good look at the Liberum website and didn't find much. I've already enabled the parent paths to solve another problem I had. ASP is already allowed. The 'helpdesk' IIS folder that contains Liberum has had anonymous access disabled and authentication set to 'integrated windows'. NTFS permissions are set on the folder to allow read-only access to staff, and full access to admins. It's just wierd that when you access the helpdesk, the browser prompts for the same username and pw that you've just used to log on - like it's forgot who you are. The domain controller knows, but IIS doesn't. It needs to be told seperately. Then there's this strange 20 minute time out. If you don't use the site for 20 minutes you have to go back to the start. Does this help? I'm new to IIS, so I'm still finding my way. (I've never used Apache either - is it any easier?)

Agree with what everyone above has said about not using the maker's utility, but allow windows to do it. I had the same problem with some Belkin wireless cards. My preferred way of installing wifi cards is to install the card drivers without the utility. There's no way of installing the driver without the utility for the Belkins, but the utility does allow you to switch it off and allow windows to manage the connection. Try logging on to a laptop as local admin then disabling the card's utility. It may take a while before it hands over control to windows. See if that allows you to restart the machine and log on to the domain. You may have to then use the windows utility to connect to the wireless network. (Someone mentioned DHCP. That will be a different problem. The only way I got round that with a 3com card was to allow it to act as a DHCP server with its own range).

I'm having a couple of problems with Liberum running on IIS on Server 2003. They're not 'show stoppers' but slightly irritating. I think they're probably related. I'm using 'NT Authentication' for the logon and Firefox as the client. 1) The first time I access Liberum in each session, I am asked by the browser to enter my username and password. Entering the same credentials I just used to logon to windows works. I don't get asked again during the windows session. 2) If I leave Liberum doing nothing for about 10-20 minutes, I get this:- Number: -2147467259 (0x80004005) Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers Description: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specifiedNo more information is available. Contact your administrator or visit the Liberum Help Desk website. I have to go back to the Liberum home page to start again. I don't get asked for credentials again, though. Any ideas? Please don't spend too much time on this, as, as I said, it's not a real problem, just annoying.

They charge $49 for it now. They used to have a phrase on their website saying "our continued commitment to the principle that you should never have to pay for a “Standard Edition” MSI packager". Now it been amended to "our continued commitment to the principle that you should never have to pay hundreds of dollars for a “Standard Edition” MSI packager".

Sorry, I didn't explain myself properly. What I meant was: Do you have to use RIPPrep? Can you use a CD based image and then install everything via group policy? I know it's a lot of work initially, but worth it in the long run. CD-based images are a lot more flexible than RIPRep-based. This is one of the reasons. Just my 2p worth.

Are you using RIPRep based images? I've only ever used CD-based images, and haven't had that problem. The original image was created from the XP installation disc. I've succesfully used it on drives between 6GB and 80GB with no difficulty.

I've spoke to our Head of English about the comments I've had and he'd like to see Eclipse 2 in action. Would any Eclipse 2 users be willing to allow us to visit your school for a look? Thanks everyone. I've also had a look at the other threads and got an idea of what products work and which don't. I'll recommend Eclipse with the fingerprint scanner.

Does anyone use this in their school? Eclipse2 from Micro Librarian Systems Ltd. (MLS) Our Head of English is thinking of investing £2200 in this and has asked for my opinion. It looks good but we really don't want an expensive white elephant. I'd welcome any opinions. Thanks.

@ Russ Although I've sort of worked in IT for about 8 years, I've only been doing it properly and full time for four years. Back in the early nineties, I worked as a database developer (on DataEase - anyone remember that?). The Artemis developer next to me was a member and kept recommending that I join. He would have proposed me. But I never did. The trouble is you have to get someone to propose you. Does it have to be an existing member? This is a barrier to people like me who could join, but don't know any members well enough to ask them.

To those who are already members: What grade are you? I've just looked at the website, and I think I qualify for Associate Member grade.

Aarrgghh!! It's true that even the ones that 'work' still need to be reset occassionally (every few weeks). But I've always lived with this. There's no possibility of replacing the APs, so there's probably nothing I can do about it now.

It works! Thanks E1uSiv3. I disabled spanning tree protocol at the start of the holidays and tried the wireless network again today and it still works. Previously, I was lucky if it worked for 2 hours. If we ever meet, I'll buy you a pint.
