Does anyone have a list of all Google's international domains? I mean google.fr, google.co.in, google.de etc. Our LEA block images.google.co.uk and images.google.com, because filtering software can't scan the content of the results and filter it out. The little darlings are using Google's other sites, like google.co.in (India) to get pictures of naked ladies. I've looked around but can't get a list. Ta.

Thanks to you both. You're right about them not having to be local administrators. My admin office staff are local admins of their computers, and they still can't 'restart later'. (I realised that just last night). However... My 'technician' account (not a member of local admins) and the domain administrator accounts are not affected by the problem, despite all the machines having the same GPO Automatic Apdates settings. It must be some other *user* GPO setting that's doing it. I'll keep looking. I'll look into your suggestions later and let you know how I get on.

Thanks. We don't allow access to to the control panel either, but I'm not sure if that would affect it. I'll try it when I get time. Users can just ignore the message, but of course they don't. They just click 'restart now' then wonder why its restarting. I've just scheduled the installations for the middle of lunch, when they're not used as much. IE7 is going in today, along with a load of security updates. I think I'll need to leave the building just before 13:00.

Nope. It's still not allowing them to 'restart later' despite setting my GPO the same as Lord_Edam's. I've checked for deadlines and haven't got any set, so it's not that either. :banghead: Our school ICT guy came out today about something else. He said the only way round it is to make the users local admins. I really don't want to to do that.

@Lord_Edam Thanks for the screen shot. I'd already got mine pretty much like yours, but still not working. I've now included the setting from system.adm (the top two of your listing), but I don't see how they'll help. The crucial one is supposed to be "Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications", but I've always had that enabled. I've also read that having any of the update with a deadline set will produce the same behaviour (i.e. not allowing them to delay a restart). How do I check for deadlines? :?: This is the first time I've run WSUS for this client (I keep RIS-ing it to test the settings). So the first updates include the WSUS updates. Maybe these force a reboot, and don't allow the user to delay them - I'll keep looking. :?

Thanks, Geoff. The additional users settings are in system.adm. I only had wuau.adm installed, so couldn't see them. I've looked at them now but don't see how they're useful to me. They just hide the windows update options from the user. I'll keep looking.

I'm new to WSUS and have only just got it working. Now, I want to install updates on computers as silently as possible. I don't want users to be inconvenienced by it. My GP settings are at the moment:- * Configure automatic updates: enabled, 4 - auto d/l and schedule, every day, 13:00 * specify intranet: enabled (our wsus server) * enable client-side targetting: enabled, test * reschedule AU scheduled installations: not configured * no auto-restart for scheduled AU installations: enabled * AU detection frequency: not configured * Allow AU immediate installation: enabled * Delay Restart for scheduled installations: enabled - 30 mins * Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations: enabled 180 mins * Allow non-admins to receive update notifications: enabled The trouble is: they get the "automatic Updates dialog box at the scheduled installation time, but "restart later" is still greyed out. I've read that enabling "allow non-admins ..." would allow them to restart later, but it doesn't! Does anyone else have this problem? What are your GPO settings? What would be the effect of setting the scheduled installation time to midnight when they all should be switched off? Would they still get the updates installed automatically? Please reply before I get another lynch mob looking for me at 13:00 tomorrow. Thanks.

I had a similar problem a few months ago (there's a thread in here somewhere). I don't know if this is the cause of your problem. It turned out that some of the repositories were innacessible (due to a bad router at my ISP). When I got access to the repositories again, Ubuntu installed in a few minutes. I think Ubuntu has a really long timeout before giving up on a repository.

We haven't experienced this. In my experience, Searchstar just needs the default file permissions for it's installation folder. Eclipse, on the other hand, needs the user to have full access to the installation folder. Everyone needs full access to the server share, in all cases.

That's tragic. We got Eclipse this year and think it's great. (I can't help with the original question, though).

I'm a Linux newbie but have set up Ubuntu LAMP server for my school's intranet. I used parts of Ubuntu Perfect Setup Follow steps 1, 2 (choose LAMP server), 4, 5, 6. (skip step 3). Then, from your windows desktop, use WinSCP3 to navigate the files sytem and upload the web site (/var/www), and PuTTY to administer it remotely. I now have an intranet server in my server cupboard that I never have to touch. Works for me.

To everyone who's already bought on of the popular TeraStation Pros:- I'm thinking of increasing our storage capacity for teachers and students with a Buffalo TeraStation Pro. We use Win Server 2003 and AD, like most schools. It look like the TeraStation Pro is a linux box. My main concerns are:- AD integration - does this mean that I can assign 'proper' NTFS-style file permissions to users home folders on the NAS? Speed - we're a small school. There'll probably be only about 100 users online at once. Will the TeraStation Pro cope with this? Offline folders - Teacher's synchronise their home folders from their laptops with the existing windown server. Will I still be able to do this if they're moved to the TeraStation Pro? Any advice would be welcome - thanks.

Thanks for the offer John, but I eventually sorted them out after a lot of effort. RIS works with some SATA controllers OK, but others were tricky. I was just hoping that the new system would work better with them.

Mmmm ... I'm not sure really. Sorry, it's late at night. I meant dozens or hundreds or DCs across multiple sites. 'Enterprise' level stuff.

Unless your network is huge (bigger than most schools) I don't see the point. I suppose if your FSMO DC has not much else to do, then then it won't be overburdened.

Thanks. I may try it. I've had problem with RIS installing on machines with SATA controllers. I was wondering if WDS might fix that.

Thanks. Is there any benefit to deploying XP with WDS? I'm not planning on using Vista for a couple of years, we just don't have the hardware; but I'm interested in the new deployment tools if they're any use to me at the moment with XP.

To all those who mention using the imaging tools:- Does this mean you are using Longhorn Server too for the imaging, instead is RIS on Server 2003?

Probably too late, but don't forget to set the screen saver and power settings so it stays on.

I did this once for a display for a parents evening. I just set it running, then removed the keyboard and mouse before going home. (Probably not what you'd want for a long-term solution, though).
