Adding new server to 2000 domain

Situation: Server 2000 DC with Exchange 2000 on same box.

 

Right, given the info above how do I add a server 2003 R2 to this domain? My plan is to add the new server to the domain, transfer the roles, Exchange etc, then remove the original 2000 box from the domain.

 

I’ve ran adprep /forestprep on the 2000 box and it throws an error saying the schema has not been changed and refers me to microsoft knowledgebase 325379 How to upgrade Windows 2000 domain controllers to Windows Server 2003. From reading the article I appear to be in scenario 2 but I only want to upgrade the schema and not upgrade the old box to 2003.

 

What is this the best way to proceed now?

you need to follow the Ms advise to change the 200 schemeas to be compatable with 2003. I would also look to getting an additional server as DC and exchange should ideally be kept seperate

Alternatively upgrade your existing DC to 2003 Server, then transfer roles etc... these guides should point you in the right direction.

 

Transfer the 5 roles (including the schema), Global Catalog, DNS and DHCP
