Microsoft redesigns Paint for Windows 10

Microsoft is building a Windows 10 version of its famous Paint tool. While the software maker has barely updated Paint in recent releases of Windows, the new Paint app will be completely overhauled. Twitter user WalkingCat has discovered video demonstrations of the new app, and it's clearly designed with Windows 10 in mind.

 

A launch video notes that the new "Paint Preview" app includes all the familiar features of the regular version of Paint, but Microsoft is adding in 3D object support — an ideal addition for HoloLens. Paint Preview users will be able to create 3D objects, and annotate them freely. Microsoft has a range of markers and art tools to help artists create objects, and brushes that can be used directly on 3D objects. All of the tools appear to be pen- and touch-friendly, with an interface that mixes 3D models, 2D images, stickers, and community tools for 3D content.

Thanks for this @Arthur a ever a very useful post from your good self. I just wish MS would do something about the update situation - my daughter's W10 laptop took about 3 hours last evening when it unexpectedly decided to apply the latest update for her. Makes me so glad I've not pushed out W10 on our Domain at work.

The impression I get is at Redmond PCs are left on 24/7. Or at least in standby. So they wake up for updates. If you shutdown they don't happen until the PC is next on, when someone's trying to use it. So go for standby and logged off so if it does update and need a reboot it will.

I have issues with Windows Updates where it takes 20 minutes to update then roll back then re-start some number of times. It is really annoying.

There might be a new version of Windows Movie Maker too.

 

A version of Microsoft's Windows Movie Maker may be coming to Windows 10

 

Microsoft stated in a support page that a version of Movie Maker, one of its most popular free Windows desktop apps, could be coming to the Windows Store for Windows 10 PCs.

 

For those of you who are unaware, Windows Movie Maker is a easy-to-use video editing app, with the first version launched in 2000 as part of Microsoft's Windows Essentials software suite. The current version of the app was released in 2012. Microsoft plans to end support for all of its Windows Essentials 2012 apps on January 17, 2017.

 

While the support post for those apps shows that Microsoft has listed a number of alternatives for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 owners for the rest of the apps in the suite, such as Mail, Photos and OneDrive, it lists something different for Movie Maker:

 

Movie Maker will soon be available from Windows Store for Windows 10 users.

 

That's all that Microsoft has revealed so far, at least publicly. There's no word on a release date, nor if Movie Maker will be released as a UWP app or simply converted from its current desktop version via Microsoft's "Project Centennial" tools. We have contacted Microsoft to see if they have any more information on Movie Maker for Windows 10.
