Hello,

Bit of a strange issue, we use a custom start menu and desktop for our students. These are shortcuts linked to our server and set out via a GPO. For some reason, when a student logs into windows all they can see is the standard W7 wallpaper with no desktop icons or start menu shortcuts although they can browse the internet and access their files. The strangest issue is the problem is intermittent, the same student can log onto a different machine and all desktop icons are there but if they log off and back in again they just disappear. I have tried everything from deleting the profile on the local machine copying profile from another PC even restricting the users folder on the C drive. We don't use roaming profiles for the students. Whilst im on the subject, is there anyway I can stop local profiles being saved to each PC? Just clutters everything up. Sorry for the massive paragraph. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hey @ryanplym,

I had this issue a last week, that fix from @tmcd35 does works, but I was plagued with more issues after, so switched over back to roaming profiles and gave everyone new profiles that seem to worked.

Oh and make sure that your folder redirection is like this \\SERVER.DOMAIN.PRI\ICONS\Students\Desktop

and in your GPO

user configuration > Administrative templates > start menu and task bar > "Remove all Programs list from the start menu" is Disabled

This is how our set up is. We use roaming profiles. They just become corrupt from time to time (9/10 student not login off properly or staff login in to 2 or more machines, grrr). When this happens it seems you have to do both. Delete the old roaming profile from the local computer and the server, and, delete the profile from the registery. User should get new profile when they login next and the issues resolved - until the next time they corrupt it
